The guard patted her shoulder. "Don’t worry, you’ve got a visitor."

At that, a hint of confusion flickered in Anabel Wilton’s eyes. Ever since she had been imprisoned, apart from her mother’s brief visit soon after, no one else had ever come to see her.

"Who is it?"

"You’ll find out when you get there, won’t you?" The guard took out handcuffs, fastened them around Anabel’s wrists, and then gave her an impatient pat on the shoulder. "Quickly now, don’t waste time."

Anabel Wilton quickened her pace, following the guard out of the workroom and into the Reception Room.

Through the glass, she saw Vera Wave, and her pupils contracted slightly.

On the other side, when Vera saw her approach, she immediately picked up the phone hanging on the wall and gestured for Anabel to do the same.

Anabel picked up the receiver and held it to her ear.

"How have you been lately?" Vera asked from the other side of the glass wall.

Anabel’s tone wasn’t very friendly. "Just be direct. No need to beat around the bush."

Having been wrongfully imprisoned, and now facing a murderer who walked free, Anabel was naturally in low spirits.

"Alright then, I’ll get straight to it," Vera said, her gaze fixed on Anabel’s face through the glass. "You’ve said before that you didn’t do it. Do you have any evidence? If you do, I can help you prove your innocence."

Anabel sneered. "If I had evidence, would I still be sitting here?"

"Then on what basis should I believe you?" Vera countered. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

"Hmph!" Anabel snorted. "When did I ever ask you to believe me? Whether you believe me or not is your business. Whether I did it or not is mine. Stop bothering me!"

She abruptly stood up, slammed the receiver back onto its cradle, and headed for the exit.

"Anabel Wilton, wait..."

Agitated, Vera knocked on the glass, but Anabel paid her no mind, simply striding out of the visitor’s room.

Watching Anabel’s figure disappear through the exit, Vera could only frown and sigh.

The guard beside her patted Vera’s shoulder sympathetically and offered a reassuring smile. "She’s always like this, unable to recognize good intentions."

Vera had been an inmate there before, so the guards, of course, recognized her. They knew she had influential connections and were always very polite to her.

Returning the smile, Vera stood up. "How has her behavior been in prison?"

"Oh, her? She’s been very proactive, wholeheartedly focused on getting her sentence reduced. She even earned merit once. We helped submit her application for reduction, but it wasn’t approved." The guard sighed. "You know, her case was very serious. Alas... if only she had known then what would happen, she wouldn’t have acted as she did!"

It was such a massive explosion. Luckily, no lives were lost, but the negative impact was undeniable. How could it be easy for Anabel to get her sentence reduced?

The guard spoke casually, but Vera immediately recalled what an old cellmate had said—that Anabel was only seeking a sentence reduction so she could get out and take revenge.

Anabel’s sentence was fifteen years. Without a reduction, she would be in her forties by the time she was released. A young woman’s best years, all spent in prison; her life was practically over.

So, was this pursuit of a sentence reduction merely a form of self-deception, a spiritual comfort, or was she truly innocent?

Sitting in the car on the way back, Vera Wave gazed at the passing scenery, lost in thought. Irene Spencer obviously disliked her; Vera knew that very well. But would she really resort to such heinous methods?
