Chapter 28: Time Capsule [2]

"This is going to be fun..."

From an aerial view, one would see a massive stadium towering towards the sky. The number of seats in the stadium numbered close to a hundred thousand and they were all red, with variations of color used to create fancy patterns. From the arrangement of the differently colored seats, one could make out various drawings of white devils as well as the hugely written words "MANCHESTER UNITED" spanning the longer side of the rectangular bowl surrounding the playing field.

Oddly enough, the large stadium was completely empty. Instead, there was just one blonde haired boy in the center of the pitch. He looked around him in marvel as he took in the view, imagining the stadium filled with spectators.

"Damn, I really have to hand it to you, you cooked on this one," Will said to the system as he looked around.

When the system told him he could literally will any playing field into existence to train on, he played around with it, starting small. He first willed the small field in his backyard, then the field in the park, then Rockliffe training facilities, and then, filled with confidence, he willed himself into one of the most famous stadiums in England, if not the most famous, Old Trafford.

Will kept looking around the stadium in marvel. He hadn’t been to or played in bigger stadiums, so this experience was still a little new to him.

"Imagine if this place was filled to the brim," Will said to himself as he looked around the stadium. After a few more minutes of fanboying, he snapped himself out of it. "Alright, now we go straight to work."

Over the past few days, he had been improving his playmaking. From what David told him to do during the last friendly match and from what he had been doing during training, David wanted his attacking midfielder to orchestrate things in attack. He was using a 4-2-3-1, with a pivot in midfield. His six was a traditional defensive midfielder, all work rate and tackles, while Marcus, who played as the eight, was a ball carrier who helped progress the ball up the field. He was very press resistant and strong on the ball, which was why David valued him. He also had a limited passing range, which was why David looked to his ten to orchestrate things.

"Alright, is there a way to train?" Will asked the system after thinking for a bit. He was trying to figure out how he would train now that he was actually inside the Time Capsule.

[Ding! Should I draft out an optimal training plan for you to use and follow so that you would be able to achieve optimal results?]

"Yes."

[Ding! Analyzing host’s stats]

[Ding! Preparing training plan]

[Ding! Reconfiguring Time Capsule environment]

[Ding! Plan complete]

Immediately, Will felt his surroundings shift. He was still inside Old Trafford, but this time the stadium was fully filled with fans who were cheering for their team, whose jersey he was currently wearing. Looking around him, there were also players wearing the jersey, but they had no features. They were like mannequins, except they did not have any human features.

"Whoa? What’s going on? What are these things?"

[Ding! They are called shadows. Figure like objects made to imitate the human body to aid with your training. You want to learn how to orchestrate from an advanced position. After running many simulations, I concluded that experience is indeed the best teacher. You have been dropped into a match state where you are expected to do as you have been trying to learn. You have a team and an opposing team. Your mission is to win while playing as an advanced playmaker. If you play with another style or role, your training will not count and all the gains from this session will be nullified.]

"What?! Are you flipping mad?!" Will was outraged. He wanted to learn, he didn’t want to work in vain just because he didn’t get it right the first time.

[Ding! Host asked for my help. I’m giving my help.]

"Fucking system," Will muttered under his breath. He was still dissatisfied with the conditions, but he understood that the system did it with his growth in mind. And faced with the incentive of losing all his training benefits, Will would indeed try his best. There was no way he was going to allow ten hours worth of training to go to waste, not to mention the credits he spent to get into the Time Capsule in the first place as well as the credits he would spend to purchase a recovery potion. If he did all that for nothing, then he could vomit blood.

Looking around at the faceless shapes that now occupied the pitch, Will took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. The sheer scale of the illusion was dizzying. The deafening roar of a hundred thousand simulated fans pressed down on him from the steep, red stands of Old Trafford, the sound vibrating right through the soles of his boots. It felt terrifyingly real, yet the blank, featureless mannequins standing in formation around him provided a surreal, ghostly contrast.

He looked down at his chest. He was wearing the iconic red shirt of Manchester United, the fabric feeling exactly like high quality athletic gear. A few yards away, the shadow playing as his striker stood on the halfway line, ready to kick off. Behind Will, the two shadows representing his midfield pivot took their places. He could recognize the tactical shape instantly. It was the exact 4-2-3-1 system David had been drilling into them, tailored specifically to mirror his real world team dynamics.

"Alright, let’s see what these shadows can do," Will muttered, clapping his hands together to shake off the lingering tension.
