I Returned to the Day He Brought His First Love Home
Chapter 186: The Internship Ends
"Grace, have you heard? They say some big shot from up top specifically ordered a thorough investigation, and they’ve uncovered quite a few things."
"That Stanley Shaw has really dragged his whole family down with him. This investigation isn’t just targeting him—the entire Shaw family is getting caught in the crossfire."
"I heard. Several people were stripped of their positions. They’re not just going to lose their jobs—they might even end up in prison."
Grace had just arrived at the office when a few gossips hurried over to fill her in on the day’s big news.
Stanley Shaw had come in early, so quite a few people in the office had seen him being led away.
In silver handcuffs.
Grace was stunned. ’Victor Zane was one thing, but how did Stanley Shaw get into trouble too?’
’It couldn’t be because of me, could it?’
’Does Archer Rhys have that much clout?’
She shook her head. ’Impossible.’
’The higher-ups are probably cracking down on corruption within the system, and Stanley Shaw just happened to be the one they made an example of.’
’Besides, Stanley Shaw had done plenty of shady things in the past. It was only natural that he’d be held accountable now.’
Grace quickly put the matter to the back of her mind and focused on her work.
There was a lot of material to get through. She had twenty days to study and translate simultaneously, and she wasn’t confident she could finish it all in time.
During her breaks, she would have to go to the library to scrounge up some cassette tapes. ’My vocabulary is definitely lacking. After all, I didn’t have much exposure to foreign languages in my past life. Right now, I’m just brute-forcing my way through with sheer effort.’
After what happened with Stanley Shaw, many people gossiped behind Grace’s back. Suspecting she might be connected to the incident, everyone became warier of her. At the very least, the backbiting stopped.
Grace was relieved to be left in peace. It was for the best that no one was whispering about her anymore. Now, she could fully immerse herself in translating the documents.
Seeing how dedicated Grace was, Samuel Ford couldn’t help but give her a thumbs-up. "Comrade Winslow, you’re truly the model worker of our office. Your level of diligence puts me to shame."
Grace just smiled. "Well, Minister Rhys said he hopes I can finish translating these documents before I leave. I don’t want to let him down. Besides, I’m learning so much in the process, and I think it’s quite fascinating."
"If you need anything at all, just let me know," Samuel Ford said, looking at Grace with admiration.
Grace thought for a moment. There actually was something he could help her with. "Secretary Ford, do we have any cassette tapes or anything that I could borrow and listen to?"
"My vocabulary is really lacking. As a first-year student, I haven’t learned such advanced and specialized terminology yet, which makes my translation speed really slow. It’s becoming a real headache."
Grace wasn’t lying. For the parts she found difficult to understand, she had been translating based on context and her own interpretation, without knowing if her choices were correct.
After all, she wasn’t formally trained in the subject. When it came to in-depth physics knowledge, she felt a bit out of her depth.
Of all the subjects she’d taken in university, she had never studied physics. The main reason was that it was a complex field and she had no foundation, which would have made in-depth study extremely difficult.
’It seems that to get a good job after graduating from the foreign languages department, you have to take courses from every other department too. Otherwise, the moment you encounter specialized material, you’re completely in the dark.’
There was no such thing as one-click translation software in this era.
"Cassette tapes... I think we might have a batch. Hold on, I’ll go check the storeroom for you." Samuel Ford’s eyes lit up after a moment of thought.
"Thank you, Secretary Ford."
Samuel Ford was quick. In less than two hours, he returned with a box of cassette tapes.
"I don’t know if they still work, but this is our office’s entire inventory. They’re ancient relics. Take them and see if they’re any good, but remember to bring them back." Samuel Ford handed the box of cassettes to Grace.
Grace accepted them as if they were a priceless treasure.
She took out her radio, pulled out a cassette, and put it inside.
To her surprise, it still worked. The sound quality was just a bit poor, with a fair amount of static.
But for Grace, that wasn’t an issue at all.
After the trouble with Victor Zane had passed, Grace hired workers to renovate the vandalized storefront. Irene Lynch took the opportunity to rest for three days before reopening the shop.
Carter Sawyer and Fiona Lowell both returned.
Having a job was better than being forced into an early marriage.
They cherished the opportunity.
Business at the shop recovered. With what happened to Victor Zane serving as a warning, no one dared to be foolish enough to bother Irene Lynch again, and her shop’s business began to flourish.
By August, Hayley had arrived in Coronet again with her child.
This time, she wasn’t just visiting for a few days. She had obtained the documents from the neighborhood committee to transfer her household registration and was planning to settle in Coronet for good.
Owning a house made the registration process much simpler, and she managed to get all the paperwork sorted out in just three days of running around.
Of course, she had also asked Sean York to help pull a few strings.
Just as Hayley finished handling all her paperwork, Nolan Winslow and his wife also arrived in Coronet.
They had sold their house back home, which was why they arrived a little later.
With Hayley’s case as a precedent, transferring their own household registration would be simpler.
After finishing the paperwork, they rushed off to the elementary schools without a moment’s rest to inquire about enrollment.
Because their children were transferring from another city, their academic progress was different. To get into a good elementary school, they would need to pass an entrance exam.
Hayley and Lily Callahan were busy beyond belief.
Grace’s internship also came to an end.
When she handed the translated documents to Leon Rhys, he looked at her with utter disbelief.
After reviewing the documents Grace had translated, his desire to poach her for his own team grew even stronger.
’What a talent!’
’She managed to translate such profound and difficult documents just by looking through books and teaching herself.’
Leon Rhys had Samuel Ford take the documents to several of the country’s top foreign language experts to review, primarily to gauge the accuracy of the translation.
The country was in a period of reconstruction, and talent of all kinds was in short supply. Experts in foreign languages were especially scarce.
If Grace’s accuracy rate was high enough, he could perhaps recommend her to the Translation Bureau to help with translating some documents.
Grace was completely unaware of any of this.
All she knew was that her internship was over and school would be starting in a few days.
Once school started, a new round of busyness would begin.
For the past month or so, Joanne Chase had been helping out at Irene Lynch’s shop, but partway through, she was called back by Claire Dunn.
Grace was leaving early for work and coming home late every day, and in the blink of an eye, almost a month had passed since she had last seen Joanne Chase.
When they finally had a moment to meet, Grace discovered that Joanne Chase’s entire demeanor had changed. Dressed so stylishly, she was no longer the little country bumpkin she used to be. Now, she looked like a true urban trendsetter.
"Grace, my teacher says I’m making rapid progress, so she signed me up for a cultural exchange event! I’ll be able to speak with foreign guests face-to-face. I’m a little nervous, what should I do?"
The moment Joanne Chase saw Grace, her face lit up with excitement and she ran straight to her.
Grace patted her hand reassuringly. "That’s wonderful news. Don’t be nervous, just relax. You’ll be fine."
