I Returned to the Day He Brought His First Love Home
Chapter 227: Outwitting the Human Traffickers
"A little fever is no big deal for a child. He’ll be fine after some medicine at home. Why does he need to go to the hospital? Why waste the money? It’s not like we have much." The old woman was still arguing, completely against Grace Winslow taking the child to the hospital.
They knew perfectly well that the child had been kidnapped. If he died, they could just find some deserted mountain and toss him there. No one would ever know.
Grace Winslow was a grown woman, and now that she had fallen into their trap, they had to get her back with them as soon as possible.
To avoid any further complications.
"Look at how high his fever is! I already said I’d pay for it, so why won’t you take him to the hospital?"
"You promised me when we got married that you’d listen to me about everything. But after we got married, you listened to your mother’s goading and did nothing but beat or curse me."
"Ever since I married into your family, I’ve had to wake up before dawn every day to work. I’ve put up with all of that, but our son is only two years old! Are you really going to just watch as this fever burns out his brain and leaves him an idiot for the rest of his life?"
"If that’s how it’s going to be, then let’s just get a divorce! I’m not going home with you, and I’m taking the child with me."
Holding the child, Grace Winslow took two steps back.
The traffickers hadn’t been on guard against her. Hearing her words, they instantly sensed something was wrong. Just as they were about to surround and grab her, Grace Winslow kicked the basket of eggs one woman was carrying to the ground, snatched a vegetable basket from another woman’s hand, threw it down, and then turned and ran.
The traffickers wanted to chase after her, but they were blocked by angry passersby.
Grace Winslow had run off with the child, and now they were the ones left to pay for the damages.
Grace Winslow didn’t dare to stop; she just held her breath and kept running forward.
Luckily, the hospital wasn’t too far. She sprinted the whole way and finally burst through the doors.
She happened to run into the dark, thin man who had been looking for Archer Rhys. Seeing Grace Winslow panting with a child in her arms, George Holland walked over, a look of astonishment on his face. "Sister-in-law, what’s all this? Where did you get a child?"
"T-Traffickers... at... at the bus stop down the road. They... they probably haven’t left yet. The child... they kidnapped him. They... they also wanted to kidnap me, but I saw through their act. Quick... go catch them... eight... eight of them..."
Grace Winslow explained the situation while gasping for breath. The child in her arms was burning up; you could feel the heat radiating from his body even from a distance.
"I’m going to... to register him first..."
With that, she ran off with the child to find a doctor.
George Holland immediately realized the gravity of the situation. He called over two of his teammates who were outside, and they rushed straight to the bus stop.
When they arrived, the traffickers hadn’t had a chance to flee. They were surrounded by a crowd of onlookers.
After all, Grace Winslow had broken quite a few things when she left, so naturally, the crowd was demanding they pay for it.
They refused to pay and were now claiming they didn’t even know Grace Winslow.
Their story kept changing, and the passersby immediately realized something was wrong.
Thinking back on Grace Winslow’s actions just moments before, it all became clear.
This group was definitely up to no good.
So everyone swarmed them, pinning the four people pretending to be a family to the ground and giving them a beating. Not even the old woman was spared.
By the time George Holland and his team arrived, the group was already black and blue.
Some helpful citizens were even about to drag them to the nearby police station.
George Holland couldn’t help but be shocked. He just couldn’t figure out how a seemingly frail woman like Grace Winslow had managed to escape from traffickers, let alone get them beaten up by passersby and captured.
George Holland and his men stepped forward and identified themselves. Seeing this, four accomplices standing nearby realized the situation was bad and immediately turned to leave.
But George Holland had already heard from Grace Winslow that there were eight of them. Seeing those few people lowering their heads to leave, he immediately gave his teammates a look. The two teammates reacted quickly, rushing over and restraining them.
The passersby helped too, and all of them were caught.
"Officer, they just broke a basket of my eggs! They need to pay me ten yuan!" an old woman exclaimed angrily, grabbing George Holland’s arm.
"Yes, and my vegetables were worth two yuan! They have to pay!"
"Alright. Everyone, please come with us to the station. They will compensate you for whatever they damaged," George Holland said with a nod, leading the whole group back to the police station.
Grace Winslow found a doctor with the child, who had been running a fever for a long time and was now delirious.
The doctor took one look at the situation and couldn’t help but scold her. "What kind of parent are you? How could you let the child’s fever get this bad before bringing him to the hospital?"
"There’s some serious noise in his lungs. It’s probably pneumonia. This is going to cost a lot of money, and there’s no guarantee he can be cured. You should hurry up and go pay the fees."
Grace Winslow nodded, took the prescription the doctor wrote, and went to the payment office on the first floor.
The treatment fee and hospital deposit totaled three hundred yuan. After paying, Grace Winslow returned to the doctor’s office.
A nurse had already come to set up an IV for him.
Grace Winslow handed the payment receipt to the doctor. Seeing that she had paid the three hundred yuan without so much as a frown, the doctor realized she wasn’t the type to be indifferent to a child’s life. His attitude softened a little. "The child’s condition isn’t good. The next two days will be critical. As his parent, you need to stay by his side at all times. Take his temperature every half hour. If you notice anything unusual, find a doctor or nurse immediately."
"For now, head to the inpatient department. Someone, please show her the way."
Grace Winslow carefully picked up the child. A nurse came over to help hold the IV bottle and led them to the inpatient department.
The inpatient department was on the fifth floor, and she had to climb the stairs. The child in her arms was a heavy, feverish weight; she could feel the heat radiating through her clothes.
When they reached the ward, it was an eight-person room, and it was very noisy.
Grace Winslow asked the nurse and ended up paying an extra ten yuan for a private room.
By the time she had everything settled, the sky had become completely dark.
Grace Winslow looked at the little one on the bed with a sigh of resignation. ’If I just ran off and left him here, there’s no telling if he’d even survive,’ she thought. ’And I don’t even know whose child he is. Tomorrow morning, I’ll have to go to a newspaper office and post a missing person notice to see if I can find his parents.’
There was no way she could go home like this. Worried that Irene Lynch would be anxious, she spent some money to make a phone call home.
The phone line had been installed two years ago for convenience, and now it was proving its worth.
When Irene Lynch heard Grace Winslow was at the hospital, she was incredibly worried. Only after learning that Grace herself wasn’t sick, but had kindly rescued a child, did she calm down. She insisted on coming to see them at the hospital the next day, and Grace, unable to dissuade her, finally agreed.
