I Start with a Mysterious Island
Chapter 232 - 210: Now With No One to Rely On, You Can Only Count on Yourself
Xia Qing had a gentle temperament and was always kind to others. Under normal circumstances, if she saw someone collapsed on the ground, screaming in agony, she would have certainly gone over to help.
But now, she was absolutely furious with this malicious, sallow-faced middle-aged man. She couldn’t even bring herself to look at him.
When Lin Li had turned and kicked the sallow-faced middle-aged man just now, he had held back.
Otherwise, with his Second Order Middle Stage strength, a full-power kick without reservation wouldn’t have just ended with a few broken ribs.
It was highly likely the sallow-faced middle-aged man would have been killed on the spot.
"Argh..."
"An ambulance! Someone call an ambulance!"
"Aargh... It hurts so bad! I’m dying! Won’t somebody help me!"
Passersby on the street saw the injured man lying on the ground crying for help, and they weren’t about to just stand by and let him die.
And so, some people pulled out their phones to call the police, while others called for an ambulance.
Since Lin Li was the one who had kicked the sallow-faced man into this state, he couldn’t very well just walk away. He had to wait for the Security Officers to arrive.
Since the incident had started because of her, Xia Qing naturally couldn’t leave the scene either.
She stood beside Lin Li, thinking, ’When the Security Officers get here, I’ll be a witness and explain what happened. Lin Li should be completely fine...’
Thanks to the onlookers’ calls, the Security Bureau quickly dispatched officers to the scene to handle the assault.
"You two, please come with us to the station to cooperate with our investigation," one of the arriving Security Officers said to the calm-looking Lin Li and the slightly nervous Xia Qing.
"Okay," Xia Qing nodded. Although she felt Lin Li’s counterattack hadn’t been wrong in the slightest.
But she had never been in a situation like this before, so a little nervousness was inevitable.
If this had happened just over a month ago, Lin Li would have definitely reacted just as nervously as Xia Qing was now.
But things were different now. He had spent the last several days fighting ferocious Mutant Beasts in the wilds; it wasn’t as if he’d never seen blood.
To him, kicking away the sallow-faced man who had tried to ambush him was a perfectly reasonable and trivial matter.
The two of them followed the Security Officer to the squad car parked at the curb. On the way, Lin Li smiled at the nervous-looking Xia Qing beside him and spoke.
"Xia Qing, don’t be nervous. It’s alright. That man ambushed me first. My kick was legitimate self-defense...
"Once we get to the station, we’ll just tell them the whole story. The Security Officers won’t give us a hard time..."
Hearing Lin Li’s reassurance, Xia Qing nodded, and the nervous expression on her face eased slightly.
At the Security Officer’s gesture, the two got into the squad car. It was Xia Qing’s first time riding in one, and after she sat down, she suddenly remembered her daughter was at home waiting for her to come back and make dinner.
So, she took her phone out of her purse and called her daughter.
"Hello?"
"Tongtong, Mommy has to take care of something, so I’ll be home a little later. If you get hungry, have some fruit to tide you over. I’ll make you something delicious when I get back..."
"Okay, Mommy. When you come home, can you bring me some ice cream? The ice cream in the freezer is all gone."
"The ice cream in the freezer is gone already? Alright, Mommy will bring some home when I come back..." Xia Qing chatted with her daughter for a little while before hanging up.
After Xia Qing hung up, Lin Li, who was sitting beside her, turned to her and said apologetically.
"I’m sorry about this. If I hadn’t kicked that bastard, you’d be home making dinner for your daughter right now."
Xia Qing shook her head. "This isn’t your fault," she said to Lin Li. "That man got what he deserved."
Because the Security Officers were in the car with them, Lin Li and Xia Qing didn’t speak freely.
They exchanged a few brief words, then fell silent, sitting quietly for the rest of the ride.
Ten minutes or so later, the Security Officer drove them to the Security Bureau.
When the car stopped, a Security Officer gestured for them to get out, and they followed him into an interrogation room.
The entire incident was very straightforward from beginning to end, and on top of that, there was a security camera at the scene.
So, after the Security Officer questioning Lin Li and Xia Qing took their statements and compared them with the surveillance footage, the nature of the assault case was determined.
Just as Lin Li had expected, his strike against the sallow-faced middle-aged man was ruled as legitimate self-defense—perfectly reasonable.
It took a little over an hour, and by the time Lin Li and Xia Qing walked out of the Security Bureau, it was already close to seven o’clock.
Since the matter had been resolved smoothly, Xia Qing looked much more relaxed. She smiled at Lin Li and said.
"I never noticed that corner had a security camera."
Lin Li was also a little surprised. "I remember that corner didn’t used to have a camera. I wonder when they installed it..."
"Even though we were in the right, if that camera hadn’t recorded the whole thing, it probably would have taken us a lot more time to get this settled," Xia Qing said.
