Ruyi believed there was a reason Uncle Chen had always been alone.

He deserved to be alone!

“Don’t talk while eating,” said Chen Changsheng.

“I will talk, blah blah, blah…”

Chen Changsheng was amused by Ruyi’s naughty act.

Ruyi was making noise but felt it wasn’t right. Seeing Chen Changsheng laugh, she laughed too.

“What’s so funny? Why are you laughing?”

Ruyi hit him and said, “Stop laughing!”

Chen Changsheng said, “Ruyi herself is laughing, so why stop me from laughing?”

“Just stop it!”

“Fine, fine.”

Chen Changsheng coughed and stopped laughing.

Ruyi hummed lightly and kept eating with her head down.

After a while, Ruyi turned her head.

“What?”

“Is there more rice?”

“Yes, it’s in the pot in the kitchen.”

Ruyi got up to get more rice; one bowl wasn’t enough for her.

She had been hungry too long.

In the yard, there were clinking sounds from chopsticks and bowls.

Ruyi could really eat; she had three bowls and finished almost all the dishes, but left a little.

Chen Changsheng blinked and said, “Why not finish the cucumber? Only one or two pieces left. And the egg soup—why keep a small bit?”

Ruyi choked and blinked. “I’m full…”

“This…”

Chen Changsheng sighed sadly and shook his head.

Ruyi said, “Uncle Chen, you sounded just like my mom. She often nagged like that too, almost yelling at me.”

“…”

“Why aren’t you saying anything, Uncle Chen?”

“Want me to scold you?”

“Better not.”

Ruyi smiled shyly.

Chen Changsheng said, “Remember to clean up later.”

“But Uncle Chen, that’s not fair. I’m a guest—who asks a guest to do dishes?”

“Then go fix the door?”

Ruyi looked at the broken latch and thought. “I’ll clean the dishes.”

Seeing the leftover bits of food, she asked, “What about these?”

Chen Changsheng said, “Put them in a bowl; later, give them to Lihua.”

“Lihua?” Ruyi stared at the cat on the table. “This cat is a bit fat; you must feed it a lot.”

Chen Changsheng laughed. “Better not let it hear.”

“It can’t understand.” Ruyi said, then bent to clean.

While she bent down, Lihua’s head suddenly appeared in her view.

“Huh?”

Ruyi was surprised.

The tabby cat stared hard at her—she didn’t know when it woke.

Their eyes met, and Ruyi felt uneasy.

Chen Changsheng said, “It heard you just now.”

Ruyi patted Lihua’s rump. “Good kitty, go away. I need to clean the table.”

But the cat didn’t move; it kept staring at her.

“Uncle Chen, your cat doesn’t listen.”

“You said it’s fat.”

“I didn’t; Uncle Chen, you must have heard wrong.”

“Hmph.”

Ruyi paid no mind to the cat and cleaned the dishes.

But every time she looked at the tabby cat, it stared right at her.

This made her scared.

Could the cat really understand?

Ruyi didn’t believe it, but the staring made her guilty. She quickly grabbed the dishes and ran to the kitchen.

At the kitchen door, she looked back.

The tabby cat was still watching her!

Ruyi gasped and went into the kitchen.

Lihua on the stone table turned its gaze to Chen Changsheng.

“She just said I’m fat.”

“Lihua heard that?”

“Yes, too noisy—I woke up.”

“You can sleep more.”

“Lihua can’t sleep. She said I’m fat; I can’t sleep.”

Lihua blinked and asked, “Good Human Chen.”

“Yes?”

“Is Lihua really fat?”

“No, Lihua is skinny.”

“Then why did she say it?”

“Well, maybe a little fat.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

“Hmm…”

Lihua licked her paw, then padded to the side. Her eyes held a touch of sadness, as if something had upset her.

Chen Changsheng said, “Aren’t plump ones better?”

“No,” she replied. “Plump ones fall off walls. They can’t jump as high.”

“But Lihua jumps high, doesn’t she? The courtyard wall is so tall, yet you’re up there in just a couple of steps.”

“But it’s really not as high as before.”

“That’s just laziness. More exercise fixes it.”

“Really?”

“Um.”

“So what to do?”

“I… need to think…”

Chen Changsheng stroked his chin and suggested, “Then from now on, when Lihua follows me out, she doesn’t get carried. She walks by herself. How about that?”

“Will that make me slim down?”

“Yes!”

“Then Lihua doesn’t want you to carry her anymore.”

Chen Changsheng smiled. “Lihua is very good.”

“Of course,” the Tabby Cat humphed lightly, feeling quite proud, utterly unaware she’d just been tricked again.

As they were speaking, Ruyi’s voice came from the kitchen behind them.

“Uncle Chen, who are you talking to?”

Chen Changsheng turned his head. “Talking to the cat.”

Ruyi, who was washing the dishes in the kitchen, made a small sound of surprise, but didn’t pay much mind.

Finishing up, she wiped her hands on her clothes and stepped outside.

She came over and sat on the bench.

Looking up, she saw the Tabby Cat sitting on the stone table, licking her fur.

“Stopped staring, huh?” Ruyi commented.

Hearing this, Lihua glanced at her once but paid no real attention, continuing to lick her fur. Licking kept it clean.

Ruyi reached out a finger and poked the cat.

Lihua paused, then turned to look at her.

It didn’t understand. It didn’t get it.

Why did Good Human Chen’s friends all like to poke her?

Ruyi seemed thoughtful for a moment, looking at Chen again. “Uncle Chen, if you weren’t looking for someone… does that mean Uncle Chen can understand what cats say?”

“Lihua can talk,” Chen Changsheng stated.

Ruyi pouted. “Uncle Chen, stop teasing me.”

Chen Changsheng explained, “She just doesn’t talk in front of outsiders, to avoid scaring people.”

“You can’t fool me!” Ruyi folded her arms. “Uncle Chen still treats me like a little kid! Cats don’t talk.”

Chen Changsheng blinked. “You believe I’m an Immortal, but you don’t believe a cat can talk?”

Ruyi paused. That… seemed logical.

But she still found it impossible. She was convinced Uncle Chen was just teasing her.

Shaking her head, Ruyi declared, “I won’t believe anything Uncle Chen says anymore.”

Hearing this, Chen Changsheng chuckled. “Well, suit yourself.”

Lihua kept quiet. It didn’t care to speak to Chen Changsheng’s new friend. After all, this person had called it a fat cat.
