Invincible through Touching Corpses
Chapter 293: Bombardment and Raid
Seeing his deputy captain let out a sigh of relief, Xu Jinwu looked momentarily stunned before he realized what was happening.
Lin Xinghai’s Mecha was so fast that, while it placed an enormous load on their processors, it had already crossed three kilometers in a mere moment and was about to reach the target area.
Their final volley of Mortar shells had been fired. Even if more bombardment was needed later, it wouldn’t require such precise calculations.
WHOOSH! WHOOSH!
As the last of the Mortar shells were launched, two Fission Missiles that had long been ready followed right behind them.
At that, all three firing platforms ceased operation. All anyone in Sentry Post 108 could do now was wait.
They had completed the preliminary stage of this blitzkrieg. Now, it all came down to Lin Xinghai and whether he could successfully kill the Spray Zombie.
At that moment, Lin Xinghai’s Speed Mecha was a mere 300 meters from the Zombie horde.
The view ahead was completely obscured by a green, toxic fog, but at this range, his Perception Power already enveloped all the Mutated Zombies, capturing their every move with perfect clarity.
In fact, while the Mutated Zombies’ vision was also severely hindered, their ability to sense danger was still intact, and their hearing was exceptionally sharp. They had already begun to react the moment the Mecha entered a two-kilometer radius.
By the time Lin Xinghai was within 600 meters and could observe the Mutated Zombies with his Perception Power, he found they had already formed a defensive formation, protecting the Spray Zombie in their center.
At the vanguard of the formation were five Death Claws that had entered a berserk state and six Armored Corpses.
With them at the front, plus the swarm of ranged Mutated Zombies behind, they could repel any surprise attack. Any intruder facing this lineup would likely be torn to shreds.
Lin Xinghai, however, was perfectly calm. He continued to charge along the path cleared by the artillery shells, looking as if he were truly about to engage these Mutated Zombies in a fight to the death.
But suddenly, it was as if some kind of Magic had been cast on the distant Mutated Zombie horde. The once-murderous creatures instantly scattered; one could even say they fled for their lives.
Of course, Lin Xinghai knew what was happening. The Fission Missiles had been launched. This was the Mutated Zombies’ instinctive reaction to a fatal threat.
This was exactly what he wanted.
’The window of chaos will be short—a dozen seconds at most, maybe even just a few.’ Lin Xinghai’s Perception Power was completely locked onto the Spray Zombie.
So even he would have to give it his all.
As the Mutated Zombies scattered, Lin Xinghai waited in anticipation. The direction the Spray Zombie chose to flee would determine the difficulty of his pursuit.
’If it charges straight toward me, everything will be perfect. Once I’m within a hundred meters, there’s no way it can escape.’
Unfortunately, he got the worst possible opening: the Spray Zombie fled in the exact opposite direction.
’My approach is so aggressive, it must have sensed the danger. Running the other way is perfectly normal.’ But a moment’s thought was enough to put him at ease.
In fact, most of the Mutated Zombies, especially the ones not built for close-quarters combat like the Spitters and Blood Worms, were fleeing away from him.
Faced with this situation, there was nothing for Lin Xinghai to do but stick to the plan and give chase.
Lin Xinghai wasn’t in a hurry, though. The Mutated Zombies hadn’t descended into true chaos yet, and rushing in now would still be dangerous.
WHOOSH! WHOOSH!
The two Fission Missiles, the overture to this battle, finally made their appearance. Trailing long plumes of fire, they streaked over the Mecha’s cockpit and shot forward.
BOOM! RUMBLE!
Two deafening explosions roared to life as sky-high flames and a terrifying shockwave erupted outward.
Lin Xinghai was now less than 200 meters from the blast’s epicenter. The shockwave tore past, kicking up countless rocks and sand that pelted against his Mecha with a staccato PING! PING! PING!
The nearby Ordinary Zombies were sent flying in all directions by the shockwave. In an instant, thousands of them perished in the terrifying blast.
But it wasn’t over yet.
WHOOSH! WHOOSH! WHOOSH!
One after another, Mortar shells flew over Lin Xinghai’s head. However, these shells weren’t to clear his path, but to carry out an indiscriminate, wide-area bombardment of the vicinity.
This was also at Lin Xinghai’s request. It was the only way to create sufficient chaos among the Mutated Zombies.
Of course, his request had been met with fierce opposition. After all, it was far too dangerous; it was highly likely that his Speed Mecha would get blown up in the process.
But on Lin Xinghai’s insistence, the plan was carried out.
Watching the subsequent artillery shells about to fall like rain, Lin Xinghai finally pushed his Mecha’s performance to the max. As all its power engines roared, amplified by his Superpower, the Rapid Mecha’s Speed finally surged to 5,200 points.
It was a terrifyingly high number. But only with such Speed could Lin Xinghai have dared to propose this decapitation strike.
RUMBLE~
One after another, Mortar shells fell from the sky, indiscriminately blanketing the area in explosions.
The Mutated Zombies, having dodged the Fission Missile blasts, had been attempting to regroup. However, the ensuing Mortar barrage completely shattered their plans.
After all, the power of the Mortars was not to be underestimated. Aside from Mutated Zombies with high Defense Power like the Death Claws, Armored Corpses, or Giant Arms, the others could not withstand a direct hit from a Mortar shell.
And so, the Mutated Zombies fell into chaos once more. As they scattered to dodge the explosions, the Speed Mecha weaved through the battlefield like a butterfly flitting among flowers, always managing to evade the Mortar bombardment in the nick of time.
His incredibly powerful Perception Power, combined with his unparalleled Speed, allowed Lin Xinghai to move through the battlefield like a fish in water. He quickly surged forward several hundred meters, leaped over the massive crater left by the Fission Missile, and raced after the Spray Zombie.
But just then, a colossal claw five or six meters long shot out from the dense fog. Its Sharp Claws, like scythes, glinted with a dangerous, cold light. Through the mist, Lin Xinghai could faintly make out its owner’s immense and oppressive silhouette.
A Death Claw!
And a berserk one, at that.
It hadn’t fled from the Mortar barrage like the others. Instead, it had relied on its powerful Defense Power to tank several direct hits and, using its own danger perception, had actively hunted him down.
"Trouble!" Lin Xinghai muttered. He didn’t have time to deal with a thick-skinned brute like a Death Claw right now.
The Mecha’s forward momentum didn’t falter as it dodged with a quick side-slip.
With the Speed Mecha’s Speed, it was impossible for the creature to intercept him.
Still, Lin Xinghai was annoyed.
"It’s rude not to return a favor." The launch ports on the Mecha’s legs snapped open, and two Micro Missiles shot out with a WHOOSH.
These weren’t the standard-issue Micro Missiles, however. During the modifications back at Sentry Post 108, they had been swapped out for special warheads.
The two Micro Missiles he had just launched were loaded with High-Energy Bomb warheads.
