Invincible through Touching Corpses
Chapter 297: The Scales of Victory
Before long, Zhang Yue sent the Speed Mecha’s combat footage back to the command post.
After personally confirming the authenticity of the report, the generals in the command post were utterly shocked.
Even though they already knew Lin Xinghai’s entire plan, they realized that if it had been anyone else... In fact, forget one person; even if the Military Department had sent an entire Mecha Brigade, they still might not have been able to complete such a mission.
There were simply too many difficult aspects to this mission.
If the Military Department were simply tasked with forming a mecha team capable of dealing with 53 Mutated Zombies, that would have been achievable.
The problem was that in order to kill the Spray Zombies, the team would first have to cross a full three kilometers of the massive zombie horde.
That alone would have stopped ninety-nine percent of people. After all, not everyone was Lin Xinghai, capable of running right behind the shells of a Grenade Cannon.
Even the slightest mistake in coordination would result in either the mecha getting blown up, or the pilot failing to keep pace and being swallowed by the closing zombie tide.
And even if there was a Mecha Pilot with skills superb enough to pull that off, what about the speed?
Those Mutated Zombies weren’t idiots. They wouldn’t just stand there and wait once they knew danger was approaching.
Lin Xinghai had been able to approach so smoothly because he possessed unparalleled speed, giving the Mutated Zombies absolutely no time to react.
Of course, even if the Mutated Zombies had reacted, it would have been useless. Their escape speed was simply no match for Lin Xinghai’s speed in pursuit.
More importantly, if they broke formation while fleeing, it would only lead to even more disastrous consequences.
Ultimately, the only reason this decapitation strike succeeded wasn’t because the plan was so perfect or clever.
It was simply because Lin Xinghai used his immense personal power to compensate for all the plan’s shortcomings, leading to this heaven-defying victory.
"This war against the Zombies... in the end, it all comes down to strength! With this battle, I feel like Comrade Lin Xinghai will be deified," Fang Ruzhi, the Chief of the General Staff, said with a sudden wave of emotion.
The others, including Lin Zhengyang, nodded in agreement.
And so, the news of what would later be called his "Battle of Deification" quickly spread from the command post to all the outposts.
Previously, when the 52 Zombies gathered to attack Outpost 108, the Military Department had not concealed this from the other outposts. Instead, they had made the information public so the others could clear out Zombies without hesitation.
However, this approach had its pros and cons.
The downside was that the situation at Outpost 108 had everyone on edge.
The appearance of the Spray Zombies—and especially the green, toxic mist that had already spread for several kilometers—could be seen by anyone who wasn’t blind.
Consequently, dozens of outposts had already sent messages to the Military Department, one after another, asking about the situation.
Previously, the Military Department could only offer ambiguous answers, saying things like a new type of Mutated Zombie had appeared and was being dealt with.
However, such answers did little to reassure them; the Mercenaries at the outposts were no fools.
Although they didn’t know what the dense green mist was, they could tell from the exceptionally agile and powerful zombie hordes emerging from it that it was definitely not a good thing.
What worried them even more was the issue of visibility. Some of the outposts near the mist had already discovered that their high-intensity searchlights, capable of turning night into day, could not penetrate the green mist.
’When the time comes, if we’re enveloped by this green mist, won’t we be blind? How are we supposed to shoot? How can we fend off the zombie tide?’
Just as panic began to set in, the various outposts suddenly discovered that the green mist had stopped expanding.
Not long after, they received a message from the Military Department.
Crisis averted!
Furthermore, the message was followed by a brief report on the battle.
Although the report consisted of only a few short sentences, almost everyone who read it was absolutely stunned.
Lin Xinghai had actually dared to pilot his mecha deep into the zombie tide to launch an attack on a full 53 Mutated Zombies.
What was even more terrifying, however, was that not only had he returned from this clearly suicidal act completely unscathed, but he had also killed seven Mutated Zombies, including the Spray Zombie.
Although none of them knew how on earth Lin Xinghai had managed it, what was undeniable was that after the initial astonishment, everyone who received the news was filled with nothing but excitement and elation.
In that moment, the gloom in their hearts was swept away. They no longer had to worry about the threat from the Mutated Zombies. Without that greatest variable, they were confident they could defeat the zombie tide as long as they fought a steady battle.
At that moment, morale soared to its peak.
The direct result was that the zombie-killing efficiency of all outposts shot up by twenty to thirty percent.
Of course, even though everyone felt that victory was within their grasp, the military’s high command remained level-headed.
Soon, all the outposts received an order to fall back.
Although the Spray Zombie had been killed, the green toxic mist remained. This mist dissipated very slowly; even using hurricane-force winds to disperse it would take at least an hour or two.
Faced with such a situation, it was naturally best to keep as far away as possible to minimize the threat posed by the toxic green mist.
The combat personnel in one outpost after another began to fall back, but Outpost 108 was an exception.
By order of the Military Department, they were almost completely isolated. The gap in the defensive line would be filled by troops redeployed from other areas.
Outpost 108’s new mission was simply to focus on pinning down the remaining 46 Mutated Zombies.
Lin Xinghai, of course, had no objections to this arrangement.
In the time that followed, the remaining 46 Mutated Zombies seemed to realize that Outpost 108 was a tough nut to crack, so they changed their target and attempted to move elsewhere.
In response, Lin Xinghai immediately led his team in hot pursuit.
Over the next half hour, the Mutated Zombie group launched another attack using Rampaging Zombies and Blood-colored Beetles.
However, because Lin Xinghai had previously killed two Spitters and three Blood Worms, the scale of this attack was significantly smaller.
There were only 4,000 Rampaging Zombies, and the number of Blood-colored Beetles they carried was reduced by more than half.
Having already gained experience with this kind of assault, the team handled it with incredible ease.
First, the three artillery squads launched a long-range bombardment. Then, the Combat Robots formed a defensive line at the front. Liu Miaomiao went out, used her Life Control Superpower to eliminate the Blood-colored Beetles, and all that remained was the cleanup.
The battle was over in just five minutes. They had completely annihilated the enemy at the cost of only 300 destroyed Combat Robots.
By this point, anyone could see that the tide of battle had turned. The scales of victory had tipped completely in favor of the Star Shield Shelter’s army.
