Chapter 266: Ready

The Tang family retreated to their bedrooms, sensing the tense atmosphere and not wanting to get involved in whatever had transpired with Li Xinjie and Li Chen. In the spacious living room of the Pinnacle Estate mansion, the core family members gathered - Li Xinjie, Li Chen, their mother Sun Lixia, sister Li Yanyan, and Li Chen’s wife Zhang Mei.

Li Yanyan looked between her two nephews, worry etched on her face. "Where are they? Those assassins you fought?"

Li Chen’s expression was cold and hard. "Their bodies will be sent back as presents to the organization that dispatched them."

Sun Lixia exhaled slowly, running a hand through her greying hair. "Good. I’m just tired of them constantly coming after our family because of your pasts."

Li Xinjie nodded grimly. "This was an inevitability we’ve been preparing for. But with Agent 12 and 14 eliminated, it puts us one step closer to true freedom."

He began pacing the length of the room, hands clasped behind his back as he outlined their situation. "We’ve crippled them by taking out two of their top assassination teams, a married couple no less. That’s a significant loss they won’t take lightly."

"They’ll retaliate hard," Li Chen stated, making it less of a question and more of a fact. "Losing elite assets like that will force their hand."

"Exactly." Li Xinjie paused to gaze out the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the luxurious grounds and layers of security surrounding the compound. "Which means we need to be prepared for a concentrated strike from whatever forces they can muster in the coming days or weeks."

Zhang Mei shuddered, wrapping her arms around herself. As the newest member of the family, the thought of being caught in the crosshairs of the deadly world her husband had left behind was still deeply unsettling. "What kind of forces are we talking about?"

"Anything and everything," Li Yanyan said grimly. She had been peripherally involved with the organization in her past. "Hired muscle, special operatives, cyber attacks, you name it. They have resources and assets to call on all over the globe."

Sun Lixia’s expression hardened. "Then we’ll be ready for all of it. This estate is a fortress, and our security forces are the finest money can buy."

"It’s not just about hunkering down, though," Li Xinjie cautioned, rejoining the discussion cluster. "A strong defense will buy us time, but we need to go on the offensive and break their ability to keep coming after us."

Li Chen nodded firmly. "My brother is right. Even taking out the assassins they sent, there will just be more on the way until we cut off the head of the snake."

"You’re talking about taking the fight to the upper echelons of the organization?" Li Yanyan’s eyes went wide with surprise and sudden understanding. "That’s...extremely dangerous, even for you two."

"We don’t have a choice," Li Xinjie stated, his voice hard. "As long as we’re seen as loose ends to be tied up, they’ll keep utilizing their resources to hunt us to the ends of the Earth. We need to mitigate that threat by whatever means necessary."

Zhang Mei swallowed hard, still trying to acclimate herself to the reality of the world her new family inhabited. "You’re talking about killing..." She trailed off, unable to give voice to the ugliness of it all.

"The leadership, or at least enough of the higher ranks to throw the whole organization into disarray," Li Chen finished for her bluntly. "It’s the only way we’ll ever be truly free of their reach."

A pall of grim silence fell over the room. Each of them knew the path forward would be bloody and fraught with danger, even for two supremely trained and capable men like Li Xinjie and Li Chen. But in the end, they all agreed - their family’s safety and security had to be prioritized above all else.

"What do you need from us?" Sun Lixia asked, looking between her two sons with a mother’s pride and steadfast support.

After the intense strategy session at Pinnacle Estate, Li Chen and his wife Zhang Mei drove back to their own villa in the upscale UrbanNest Estates neighborhood. The sleek sedan moved smoothly through the city streets, outwardly giving no indication of the undercurrent of tension thrumming between the two occupants.

In the passenger seat, Zhang Mei kept stealing sidelong glances at her husband’s stoic profile as he drove. Li Chen could sense her nervous energy, the thousand unasked questions hanging in the air between them. Eventually, he broke the strained silence.

"You want to ask me something, my dear wife?" His voice was soft but laced with underlying steel.

Zhang Mei hesitated a moment before plunging ahead. "What exactly is your family into, Li Chen? This... organization that’s after Li Xinjie, and now all of you by extension?"

Li Chen didn’t respond right away, keeping his eyes focused on navigating the suburban streets until they pulled into the driveway of their home. Only after killing the engine did he turn to face her fully.

"Li Xinjie was taken from our mother Sun Lixia when we were born," he began, his voice low and intense. "She didn’t even know she’d given birth to twins. Li Xinjie was...recruited...into this organization basically from birth and trained to be an assassin."

Zhang Mei’s eyes widened in shock, but she remained silent, hanging on his every word.

"Later, he was given an assignment to come for our mother and me," Li Chen continued. "That’s when we realized the uncanny similarities between us, the genetic link. DNA tests proved he was my long-lost twin brother."

"Oh Li Chen..." Zhang Mei whispered, her heart breaking for the cruel separation her husband and brother-in-law had endured so young.

Li Chen’s jaw tensed. "That should have been it - a reunion, a chance for him to leave that life behind forever. But the organization doesn’t let go of its assets so easily. Since Li Xinjie left, they’ve tried to kill him again and again to ’tie up a loose end.’ That’s what those two agents tonight represented - the organization’s refusal to let the matter go."

Zhang Mei shuddered, pieces finally falling into place. "And more will be coming, won’t they? To finish the job?"

"More than likely, yes," Li Chen said with a curt nod. "That’s why we have to go on the offensive before they can mass their forces. Take the fight to the organization’s leadership and fragment their ability to keep pursuing us across the globe."

His wife reached out and gripped his hand tightly. "Just... just promise me you’ll be careful, Li Chen. I don’t know what I’d do if I lost you to something like this." Her voice caught with the weight of unshed tears.

Li Chen squeezed her hand reassuringly, his expression softening as he drank in the sight of her lovely, worried features. "I promise you, Zhang Mei - I’ll always do everything in my power to come back home to you, unscathed. You and our family mean everything to me."

Zhang Mei managed a wavering smile at that, leaning across to kiss him deeply, passionately, trying to commit every part of him to her memory, just in case...

No. She refused to complete that thought. Li Chen would be safe, would survive and return to her. She had to believe that with every fiber of her being.

Breaking the heated kiss, Li Chen rested his forehead against hers for a long moment. "I love you, Zhang Mei. No matter what happens, remember that."

"I love you too," she breathed, trying to imprint the moment, the sensations, permanently into her mind and heart. "Always and forever."

With a lingering look of soulful commitment, Li Chen released her hand and exited the car. Zhang Mei watched through the tinted windows as he moved around to the trunk, retrieving a hard travel case containing weapons and supplies Li Yanyan had given him.

Though she knew it was necessary for their family’s survival, Zhang Mei felt a pang of sadness watching her husband arm himself for the deadly conflict to come. She silently prayed to any benevolent forces that may exist to keep him safe and deliver him home to her, no matter what violence may soon unfold.

Their world had irrevocably changed tonight. But if Li Chen and Li Xinjie were successful in their offensive against the organization, perhaps they could finally put these dark Chapters behind them once and for all.

Zhang Mei knew she had to be strong and have faith in the two men she loved most in this world. They would face the coming storm with the same unwavering determination and skill that had seen them through so much already. And she would be waiting to welcome Li Chen back into her loving embrace when the dust finally settled.
