Legacy of the God of War
Chapter 268: Have To Get It
The morning sun had just crested over the horizon when Li Chen returned to the villa from his intense daily training routine. Sweat glistened on his toned body as he pounded up the front steps, looking forward to a warm shower and hearty breakfast.
However, his plans were swiftly derailed by the chime of an incoming video call on his sleek handheld comms unit. Frowning at the unfamiliar caller ID, Li Chen swiped to accept and was greeted by the wizened, oriental features of an elderly man.
"How come you didn’t invite this old master to your wedding celebration, young man?" The aged figure chuckled through the small screen, his eyes crinkling with mirth despite the clearly weak rasp of his voice. "I had to watch the media circus broadcast like everyone else."
Surprised, Li Chen ran a hand through his tousled hair sheepishly. "Master Chen, I apologize. Things moved so quickly after Zhang Mei and I became officially engaged. I should have made sure to include you."
Chen waved a dismissive hand. "No matter, no matter. An old relic like me wouldn’t have been able to attend regardless, I’m afraid. I’ve been feeling quite frail as of late."
Now Li Chen’s brow creased with genuine concern. "Are you unwell, Master? I was actually planning to come see you soon regarding some...critical matters."
"You had best make haste, then," Chen replied with a wheezing chuckle. "We have much to discuss - including those final two pages."
Li Chen’s eyes widened a fraction, his pulse quickening at the explicit mention of that which he had long tried to ignore. "Understood. Let me get ready, I’ll be there directly."
"I’ll await your arrival." Chen’s ancient features creased in a sly grin. "Do give my belated felicitations to your new bride as well."
The call ended abruptly, leaving Li Chen staring at the blank screen, his mind already shifting gears to the solemn purpose that would spur his journey. He was halfway up the curved main staircase before realizing Zhang Mei was just exiting their bedroom upstairs, dressed for the day in a casual sweater and yoga pants.
"Where are you going?" She tucked an errant lock of hair behind one ear as she studied him curiously. "You’re all sweaty."
"I need to go visit an old friend and mentor," Li Chen replied, pausing on the stair landing to face her directly. "Chen Yunlong. He lives at Pinnacle Estate, actually. I can drop you there to stay with my mother while I’m with him if you’d like? Rather than rattle around alone in this big place."
Zhang Mei considered that for a moment before nodding. "Sure, that would be nice. It will get boring here."
Li Chen grinned wolfishly at that. "Well, I suppose that just means I’ll have to hurry up and get you pregnant so you have something other than loneliness to keep you occupied around here."
Rolling her eyes in a greatly put-upon fashion, Zhang Mei brushed past him towards their en suite bathroom to take bag and toiletries.
Li Chen guided the sleek sports car through the winding gates and up the long, tree-lined drive towards the heart of Pinnacle Estate’s sprawling acreage.
He stepped out and moved around to open Zhang Mei’s door for her, ever the gentleman. A liveried butler was already descending the main steps to greet them.
"Master Li Chen, welcome back. Your mother is awaiting Lady Zhang Mei’s company in the rosewood drawing room."
Zhang Mei laid a hand on Li Chen’s arm. "Don’t be too long, okay? I want to hear all about this mysterious old mentor of yours later."
"I make no promises," Li Chen said with a wink, stealing a quick peck on her cheek before gesturing towards the manor’s grand entrance. "Go on, get settled. I’ll return once my business is concluded."
Leaving Zhang Mei in the capable hands of the household staff, Li Chen climbed back into his car and pulled away, expertly navigating the winding side roads that would take him to the secluded villa occupied by Master Chen Yunlong.
The aged martial artist was already seated in a wicker chair on the terraced veranda when Li Chen arrived, his wizened features creasing into a toothless smile of greeting.
"Being a married man looks good on you, Li Chen," Chen rasped with one of his trademark wheezy chuckles. "Though I suppose it’s still too early to make that judgement just yet."
"Feeling frisky this morning, Master?" Li Chen smirked as he climbed the villa’s steps two at a time. "It’s only been a few days since the ceremony, after all."
Chen waved a gnarled hand in airy dismissal. "Ah, but what a profound few days it must have been for a newly married couple such as yourselves. You can’t hide that particular glow from these old eyes, young man."
Both men shared a quiet laugh at that, Li Chen taking a seat opposite his former teacher and pouring them each a cup of fragrant tea from the tray the butler had discretely provided.
"So," Chen said after taking an appreciative sip. "What matter of dire importance brings you seeking my counsel so soon after pledging your life to another? Trouble in paradise already?"
Li Chen’s expression grew serious as he set his cup down firmly. "I received...a warning. From The God of War."
That piqued Chen’s interest, his remaining wispy eyebrows arching inquisitively. "Ah, I see. The Old God has deemed it time to stir from Its slumber, has It? Tell me, what did the infinite whispers convey?"
"Simply that a great battle lies ahead, one that will test me to my absolute limits," Li Chen said somberly. "The God of War said you could help prepare me to withstand what’s coming."
Chen nodded slowly, his face growing momentarily pensive and distant as he appeared to weigh some unknown considerations. When he spoke again, his tone had taken on the weight of grim portent.
"I believe the messages we’ve both received correlate directly, Li Chen. You are indeed about to face the greatest challenge of your life thus far - one which will strain not only your martial skills and abilities, but your very soul and psyche as well."
When Li Chen opened his mouth to respond, Chen raised a hand to forestall him, pressing on with mounting intensity.
"You must come and spend these remaining days entirely in seclusion with me, dedicating yourself wholly to your final preparations and training. There is no other choice - you have been Chosen and set upon the path of true hardship now. Either you steel yourself fully for the trials to come...or your beloved new wife may find herself pulled into consequences she can scarcely fathom."
Li Chen felt his blood chill at the dire implications of the old master’s words. Part of him raged against the injustice of it all, of having to sacrifice more precious time with his family before this destiny he’d never fully asked for.
But in the end, he knew Chen Yunlong never spoke in hyperbole or riddles. If he claimed a climactic battle was looming, one that could threaten Zhang Mei and his entire support structure...then Li Chen knew his path forward was clear.
"I understand," he said simply, inclining his head in solemn acceptance. "We begin the final preparations first thing tomorrow morning. I’ll make arrangements for an extended stay here."
Chen smiled wanly, the weight of years and secrets etching his features into a stern mask. "Good. Gather what you require, Li Chen, and return to me swiftly. Time is no longer a luxury we can indulge in delays."
The two martial artists departed the veranda then, leaving the remains of their tea to slowly grow cold and bitter with the afternoon shadows. Neither spoke further on the true nature of what was to come - the silence between them far more fitting for the gravity of their shared purpose.
For in Chen’s studied, purposeful movements and Li Chen’s coiled readiness...both could sense the arrival of a reckoning unlike any other. A confrontation not just to test his skills, but the entirety of Li Chen’s being, down to the very essence of his soul.
And with the cosmic powers now fully stirring within him, the young warrior could only brace himself for the maelstrom of fates about to be unleashed. Chen’s parting words hung ominously in the evening air as Li Chen turned his gaze towards the coming storm:
"We must ensure the secrets enshrined in those final pages never fall into the wrong hands...or the world itself will be consumed in a chaos beyond mortal reckoning."
