Chapter 282: A Family Divided

Yang Bojun sat across from Grandpa Sun, holding the elderly patriarch’s unwavering gaze. Beside Yang Bojun was Sun Gang, the son of Sun Weilong and Grandpa’s eldest grandson.

"Sun Gang," Grandpa Sun’s voice was a low rumble. "Have you truly chosen a side in this matter?"

Sun Gang shifted uncomfortably. "It’s not about taking sides, Grandpa. Uncle Yang is family, is he not? Your son?"

"You insolent brat!" Grandpa Sun’s eyes flashed dangerously.

Sun Weilong put a calming hand on his father’s arm. "Now Dad, take it easy..."

Sun Gang pressed on recklessly. "Dad, you have to accept that you are not the rightful heir to the Sun legacy. Uncle Yang is."

A vein pulsed in Grandpa Sun’s tanned forehead. "A bastard child can never inherit what rightfully belongs to my true-born son!"

Yang Bojun’s expression remained impassive, but his eyes glittered coldly. "Those are harsh words...Father."

Sun Weilong looked imploringly at the man claiming to be his half-brother. "Please, we should all stay calm. Dad, your blood pressure..."

"Yes, do stay calm," Yang Bojun said smoothly. "We wouldn’t want you expiring before you’ve had a chance to set the Sun family affairs in order."

Sun Weilong studied this stranger who had burst into their lives only a month prior, asserting himself as Grandpa Sun’s illegitimate son from long ago. The resemblance to his father’s younger years was certainly striking. Clearing his throat, Sun Weilong said, "Perhaps I should call Lixia and the others, have them join this discussion."

Sun Gang nodded vigorously. "An excellent idea. We have much to discuss - such as Grandpa granting Uncle Yang shares in the family business. Just as he did for Aunt Lixia and her two sons."

Grandpa Sun’s expression was thunderous. "I hardly know this man! He has no claim to anything that is mine."

"You hardly knew Lixia either, did you?" Yang Bojun countered. "She was kidnapped as a baby, raised apart from this family. Yet you had no qualms about granting her an equal stake, including providing generously for her sons Li Chen and Li Xinjie."

"That situation was different!" Grandpa Sun shouted, his face mottled.

Sun Weilong jumped in quickly. "He’s right, it was different circumstances entirely..."

But Sun Gang was not dissuaded, his eyes boring insolently into his father’s. "How, Dad? How was it different? Because Lixia is the precious Sun family princess? The first daughter born in a hundred years?"

Father and son exchanged a loaded glance. They had known of Sun Gang’s grooming ambition and greed, but to so brazenly dismiss Sun Weilong’s birthright in favor of this stranger? It was a stunning act of betrayal, one that hung heavily in the air.

The tense silence was broken by the chime of Sun Weilong’s phone. He quickly scanned the message, then looked up at his father. "It’s from Lixia. She says they’re dealing with some urgent situation and may not make it after all."

Grandpa Sun could only nod wearily. Yang Bojun rose from his chair, adjusting his impeccable suit jacket.

"In that case, I’ll take my leave for now. But rest assured, this matter is far from settled. You would all do well to think deeply on what is best for the family legacy going forward." His eyes bored meaningfully into Grandpa Sun’s. "I’ll await word on when we can reconvene."

As Yang Bojun turned to leave, Sun Gang hurried after him, throwing one last scathing look at his father and grandfather. The air was thick with recrimination and unspoken accusations after their departure.

The heavy silence lingered in the lavish living room after Yang Bojun and Sun Gang’s departures. Sun Weilong turned to his father, Grandpa Sun, seeing the weariness etched into the elderly man’s features. The patriarch shook his head slowly.

"I cannot fathom Gang’s audacity," Grandpa Sun said, his gravelly voice lined with disappointment. "To so brazenly dismiss your birthright as my heir...to ally himself with Yang Bojun and his selfish interests over his own father." He met Weilong’s concerned gaze. "I fear your son’s greed and disloyalty run deeper than I could have imagined."

Sun Weilong sighed, sinking into a plush chair. "With respect, Father, Gang’s obsession with wealth and status emerged long before this situation with Yang Bojun. His betrayal simply represents the culmination of those flawed values taking disastrous root."

Grandpa Sun was silent for a moment, his withered hands clenched tightly as he processed his son’s words. At last, he gave a solemn nod.

"You’re right, of course. I can now see how my lengthy absences during those formative years may have had...detrimental impacts on the family." His eyes turned flinty. "But never could I have predicted it enabling this impudent whelp of a man to slither his way in, seeking to undermine everything I sacrificed to build."

"About that..." Weilong said carefully. "The DNA tests were quite conclusive. This Yang Bojun is, without a doubt, your son from before your marriage to Mother. As regrettable as that truth is, we must confront it."

Grandpa Sun’s jaw muscles clenched, but after a moment he inclined his head in reluctant acknowledgment.

"You’re correct. No matter how unpalatable the facts may be, we cannot simply dismiss them to soothe our own egos or convictions." He exhaled heavily. "I only wish your mother were still here, she would have known how to handle this situation."

Sun Weilong nodded, understanding his father’s muted grief. His mother’s passing four years ago had shaken the entire Sun family to its core. She had been their unifying pillar of wisdom and principle for so long.

"I, too, wish Mother was here," he said quietly. "Though we both know she would have eaten you alive for keeping such a secret for so many years."

"Oh Yes! I fear I will get an earful when I meet her in the afterlife," Grandpa Sun said somberly.

They lapsed into momentary silence, each lost in memories of the formidable matriarch whose presence they still felt so keenly lacking at times like these. After a contemplative stretch, Weilong continued.

"In any case, Yang Bojun’s paternity has been firmly established through the DNA results. Which means we must confront the unpleasant reality of his...claim to being involved with the family’s affairs going forward."

Grandpa Sun’s expression darkened like a thundercloud at this.

"A reality my proud, foolish grandson seems disturbingly eager to endorse, all for the promise of more power and wealth." His eyes bored into Weilong’s with steely conviction. "Make no mistake, I will not allow that snake to slither his way into my life’s work on the basis of a halfhearted dalliance from my malleable youth. This empire - my legacy - shall be inherited by my true-born son. By you, Weilong."

Sun Weilong felt his throat tighten at his father’s declarative words, That wealth of pride and certainty his father still held in him after all these years of avoiding the family business.

"Thank you for that affirmation, Father," he said gruffly. "Though I still fear my long detachment from the company’s operations may prove an issue when it comes time to assume control. There is still so much I do not..." He trailed off, not wanting to appear ungrateful in the wake of the older man’s proclamation.

But Grandpa Sun showed no offense, merely a wizened understanding.

"Then we shall ensure you are well-prepared to assume that responsibility when the time comes," he stated, as if a simple matter of fact. "For now, we must summon your sister Lixia and Count on her sound guidance in navigating these troubled family waters."

Sun Weilong nodded, appreciating his father’s pragmatism. Lixia had always been adept at cutting through emotional turmoil to see the core issues at hand. With her level head involved, perhaps they could formulate a plan for addressing Yang Bojun’s sudden appearance while reining in Sun Gang’s misguided ambition.

"You’re correct, of course," he agreed. "We would do well to have Lixia’s perspicacious counsel to rely upon while we determine our next steps."

Grandpa Sun grunted, some of the tension seeming to bleed from his shoulders. "Then we are agreed. Until she arrives, however, we must remain vigilant against any further interference from that...that skeezy half-breed attempting to worm his way into my life’s work."

Though the words were harsh, Sun Weilong could hear the undertone of dismay and bewilderment in his father’s tone. To have one’s own flesh-and-blood child emerge after so many decades, making outrageous demands - it would be profoundly disorienting under even less emotionally-fraught circumstances.

"We will remain unified against any nefarious forces, Father," Sun Weilong assured him. "Yang Bojun may share your DNA, but Lixia and myself - we are the ones who share the true bonds of family with you. That is what will ultimately protect the Sun legacy you built from crumbling."

Grandpa Sun held his son’s gaze for a long moment, solemn understanding passing between them. Then, almost imperceptibly, he inclined his head in acknowledgment of the vow.

The evening shadows were lengthening in the opulent living room by the time their conversation lapsed into brooding silence once more. But at least a path forward had been forged through the haze of stunned betrayal - one predicated on the ideals of family unity and the rightful transfer of legacy. All that remained was navigating the road ahead through the minefield of inner turmoil unleashed.
