Legacy of the God of War
Chapter 287: Arrived in Beijing
The convoy of armored SUVs finally came to a halt within the subterranean parking garages of the towering Li family hotel in central Beijing. As the engines went quiet, the operatives sprang into action with almost eerie synchronicity - fanning out to secure the perimeter with watchful sweeps.
Once the all-clear was given, the core members of the Li and Sun clans disembarked and made their way to the awaiting elevator bank in grim silence. It wasn’t until the car doors had slid shut, enclosing them in the small space, that Sun Lixia finally spoke up in an undertone.
"You know my dear sister-in-law," she began, addressing Li Yanyan beside her. "I have been running from this my entire life. The Wolves Syndicate took my husband from me, leaving me unable to properly raise our twin boys. They stole one of the twins, and I had to abandon the other just to remain in hiding. They have caused me and my sons far too much heartache over the years."
Li Yanyan’s expression remained impassive, but the muscle in her jaw twitched almost imperceptibly. "I know, Lixia," she replied, voice kept carefully level. "He was my brother, and tomorrow I will ensure I get vengeance for his life being cut so brutally short."
Sun Lixia’s eyelids fluttered briefly, as though fighting back a sudden upwelling of emotion. "It’s been nearly twenty-five years now, and I still miss him every single day."
This time, Li Yanyan’s facade fractured enough to allow the briefest flash of anguished kinship to surface before she regained her composure. "As do I. He did not deserve such a fate."
For a long moment, the two women simply stood interlocked in a devastated embrace, the others in the elevator averting their gazes respectfully as the floor numbers ticked steadily upward. Finally, Sun Lixia found her voice once more, lashings of hoarse desperation fraying its edges.
"No matter what happens after we reach our destination, my priority is ensuring my boys return home safely. Li Chen has a child on the way - his own family must be protected at all costs as well."
Li Yanyan squeezed her tighter for a fleeting instant. "Do not speak as though you are marching to your death, sister. We will secure this victory together, then return triumphantly to properly welcome Li Chen’s heir into this world - spoiling them outrageously as the little prince or princess they will be."
Though a pained half-smile finally ghosted across Sun Lixia’s lips, the weariness seemed to have seeped into her very bones. "I fear I may be the main target the Wolves seek, not just collateral," she murmured darkly. "Ordering that hit on Li Xinjie. I cannot help but suspect it was merely an elaborate gambit - the opening salvo to ultimately draw me out of hiding so they could finally enact their true revenge."
Li Yanyan’s eyelids slitted fractionally, clear displeasure rippling through her at the musing. "Then we will simply have to deprive them of that satisfaction, and obliterate whatever twisted scheme they’ve been harboring." She placed one hand against Sun Lixia’s cheek, forcing her sister-in-law’s gaze upwards to meet her own blazing intensity. "No more ruminations on death or defeat. When the dust settles, you will be free to bask in the light of your redemption - your sons at your side. This I vow to you."
The elevator chose that precise moment to shudder to a halt, chiming announced they’d reached their destination floor. As the reinforced doors slid apart, revealing the phalanx of additional security awaiting them in the plushly appointed hallway beyond, Sun Lixia drew a steadying breath and nodded almost imperceptibly.
Her path was set, no matter the darkness waiting at its terminus. All that remained was to face it head on - without faltering, and without failure as an option.
As Sun Lixia and Li Yanyan retreated into their shared room, Shadow met Sun Lixia’s gaze with a solemn nod.
"Ma’am, I will remain here to ensure your security. Do not hesitate to call if you require anything further."
Sun Lixia mustered a wan smile of gratitude before allowing the door to sweep shut, sealing her and Li Yanyan into the plush sanctuary within. Only then did the weight of the entire situation seem to crash down upon her anew, shoulders sagging beneath an invisible but utterly leaden burden.
Meanwhile, Li Chen and Li Xinjie had claimed the adjoining suite, secured by another contingent of identically grim-faced operatives patrolling the corridor beyond. As the door closed behind them with a metallic hush, Li Xinjie wasted no time turning to pin his brother with an intensity that bordered on desperation.
"Listen to me, Chen," he began in an urgent undertone, both hands clasping the other man’s shoulders in an escalatingly fierce grip. "Whatever happens once we reach the Wolves lair, your sole priority must be ensuring Cen Yuhuan’s safety - and seeing the rest of our family home, unharmed."
Li Chen opened his mouth to protest, only to find Li Xinjie’s gaze bored into his own with searing conviction. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
"I mean it," he continued, a hairline fracture of tumultuous emotion streaking across his granite features. "You cannot falter or hesitate. Not for an instant."
There was an infinitesimal pause as the words seemed to detonate in the space between them. Then Li Chen was shaking his head adamantly, a chuff of dismayed laughter escaping despite himself.
"You speak as though you have already resigned yourself to oblivion on this mission, brother," he countered, the faintest quaver of disbelief thrumming beneath the incredulity.
Li Xinjie’s jaw clenched near-convulsively, the tendons cording upwards from the hollow of his throat as if physically straining against some overbearing burden. When he spoke again, his baritone had contracted to an infinitely weary rasp.
"I am fully prepared to make that sacrifice if the situation demands it." A muscle jumped in his cheek as Chen automatically bristled with adamant denial once more. "You have a wife awaiting your return. I accepted the reality of my path long ago."
"Your path was meant to be walked at my side, you stubborn fool," Li Chen shot back heatedly, all traces of mirth now scoured from his mien. "I refuse to lose you to this darkness as well. Not after everything we’ve endured just to arrive at this crossroads."
For an endless span, the two men simply stared at each other in transparent anguish - the preternatural connection that had bound them since birth now vibrating like a livewire subjected to earth-shattering voltage. The peculiar manifestation of twin telepathy cresting between them like a physical force.
Finally, Li Xinjie inhaled a shuddering breath and seemed to almost physically wrestle his vehemence back into submission.
"We were indeed born together, despite the age dispute," he murmured in wry acknowledgment, the barest flicker of nostalgic humor ghosting across his aspect.
Li Chen snorted reflexively, the sound abraded but still carrying the faintest echoes of fraternal camaraderie. "Indeed - a mere matter of a few minutes, and yet you’ve never let me forget your ’almighty claim’ to being the elder."
"You yourself stated that no matter what terrors yet loom ahead...we march together unto the breach," he intoned soberly. "Do not falter from that conviction now when we are sorely at our most vulnerable."
It wasn’t until the first faint streaks of pre-dawn twilight began leeching through the suite’s tinted windows that the two beleaguered men could finally allow their guards to slip fractionally. Though sleep remained a distant phantasm beyond reach, some of the harrowing tension seemed to gradually leech from their frames like a receding tide.
Eventually, the fragile calm was once again shattered by the jarring trill of Li Chen’s encrypted cell phone slicing through the predawn gloom. Both men froze instinctively, previous conversation grinding to an abrupt halt as they registered the call’s source with identical flashes of grimly renewed focus.
It was one of Li Yanyan’s top lieutenants initiating the secure line. Which could only mean their incursion against the Wolves Syndicate was due to kick into high gear imminently.
Squaring his shoulders with the same battle-honed discipline that had carried him through countless other life-or-death crucibles over the years, Li Xinjie stood and began checking over his combat loadout one final time. Beside him, Li Chen answered the call with clipped precision and immediately launched into a brief but hushed exchange of acknowledgments.
By the time the line went dead, a profound pall had resettled throughout the opulent hotel suite. All vestiges of its previous, fleeting tranquility were now utterly extinguished - replaced by that bone-deep sense of imminent conflict stirring to virulent wakefulness within both men’s steeled psyches.
"No more ruminations or doubts from this point forward, brother," he stated in an tone utterly devoid of inflection. "We know what must be done, and we will not be dissuaded from that immutable purpose. Not by any force this world can possibly muster against us."
Chen’s jaw tensed fractionally, a muscle feathering there as he processed the unvarnished proclamation. Then his posture stiffened into an equally unyielding mirror of Xinjie’s combat-ready mien, previous turmoil now fully sublimated beneath an armored façade of grim, implacable determination.
"I solemnly vow to see this through unto the absolute conclusion, no matter how pyrrhic the cost," he replied in a tone bordering on ritualistic incantation.
The words hung in the space between them like a sacrosanct vow, waiting to either be eternally consummated...or shattered beyond repair by the rapidly encroaching tempest. Their individual fates now seemed to shear away into utter insignificance when contrasted against the singular driving purpose propelling them forward.
