Chapter 289: At The Wolves Den

The hours ticked by in a studious blur of meticulously cross-checking contingencies and scenario mapping as the Li family coalition integrated Agent 10’s insider knowledge into their operational plans. Despite the persistent undercurrent of guarded skepticism toward the former Syndicate operative, his granular familiarity with the Wolf’s den’s internal security matrices proved invaluable.

Finally, as the last traces of twilight seeped from the Beijing sky, it was time to deploy.

With brisk efficiency, the various tactical units filtered through the hotel’s subterranean garage towards their pre-assigned transports and staging areas. Weapons were checked and comms channels triple-verified, the weighted hush of lethally focused preparation blanketing them all.

Xu Zhonhao and Tang Ziyi’s cyber team was among the final elements to embark, having overseen systems integration up until the last possible second. As the pair made their way across the garage’s sprawl toward the armored van housing their operational tech suite, Tang Ziyi couldn’t resist one last sweeping assessment of their formidable array of forces.

Ranks of tactical armor-clad operatives stood at disciplined parade rest beside a sheaf of gun-trucks and attack gunships purposed for extreme firepower delivery. Overhead, maintenance drones hummed in tight, precise holding patterns - each one lancing its brilliant aura across their matte-black fuselages.

At the garage’s central egress point, two of the largest SUV transports had already begun powering up - their thick run flat tires shuddering against the concrete as onboard systems cycled to full readiness. Tang Ziyi noted Li Xinjie and Sun Lixia’s respective details already taking up overwatch positions around both behemoths, faces grim behind mirrored visors.

His gaze lingered momentarily on the petite but severe figure of Shadow bracketing one of the transports, before Xu Zhonhao’s voice issued a low prompting from the van’s open liftgate behind him.

"We need to get the systems primed and ready to uplink on arrival," the other man stated with clipped urgency. "Any delays or lag times when we hit their primary network architectures could prove catastrophically compromising."

With a terse nod, Tang Ziyi turned and ducked inside after his partner - hands already working in a memorized flurry over the equipment panels as the van’s reinforced hatch sealed them into a clicking cocoon of electronic warfare.

Around the garage, last-minute preparatory tasks seemed to reach a crescendo of crisp choreography. Motorized racks of supplementary ammunition and ordnance were racked beside their respective transports, Quick Reaction Force rosters triple-checked, and hardline communications channels locked with each successive green-light affirmation.

Only once every element had reported readiness did the central hatch separating the garage from the outside world begin groaning ponderously open. Actinic daylight from the hotel’s private motor courtyard beyond spilled inwards in a blinding slipstream, striping harsh zebra shadows across the now tautly still interior.

Then Li Chen and Li Yanyan appeared silhouetted before the aperture, clad alike in tailored black battledress and garish armored vests bristling with tactical accessories. Their respective features were cast in harsh monochrome, expressions implacably focused straight ahead toward the row of waiting transports.

"May the Ancestors favor us on this night, and grant us all the fortitude and ferocity of their unrelenting spirits," Li Chen intoned in a solemn baritone that seemed to reverberate throughout the cavernous space. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

Beside him, Li Yanyan’s chin angled a fraction higher, the cording tendons of her throat chroming into braided prominences for the briefest instant.

"Victory or oblivion - that is our mantra on this darkness road," she affirmed in a resonant alto. "The Li and Sun clans will know final deliverance from the Wolf’s malignancy once we return...or else see their ancestral light finally extinguished for good."

At her words, the transport engine banks surrounding them seemed to ramp higher with a phased whining overture. As if girding themselves in preparation to surge forth and either conquer...or be unmade utterly.

Li Chen and Li Yanyan led the way towards the two central SUVs without another word - steps implacably measured in tandem, like two avatars of death itself manifesting on corporeal devastation. They took up their positions on either side of the larger transport’s reinforced flank, hands resting atop their sidearms as their respective bodyguards fanned out in lockstep.

Moments later, the garage was a thunder-washed maelstrom of unleashed violence as the entire convoy erupted outward in a single, irrevocable surge of unstoppable momentum.

Within her armored SUV, Sun Lixia felt the chassis shudder around her with the impact thrusts of sudden acceleration. Her jaw clenched in instinctive preparation...even as her insides twisted into a parenthetical vice of anxiety and dread.

They were committed now. No matter what fresh hells and devastations still lay on the road ahead, the die was utterly cast.

The Wolves had to be put down this fateful night - no matter how viciously they chose to bare their fangs in final, snarling defiance.

Otherwise, her family’s tragic odyssey would simply spiral onward into perpetual torment...until even the very concepts of respite and redemption were forever scoured from living memory.

As the convoy split off into their pre-assigned vectors, only the armored transport carrying Li Xinjie and Sun Lixia maintained a direct course toward the imposing front gates of the Wolves Syndicate’s sprawling Beijing compound.

Thick concrete barrier walls topped with coiled razor-wire loomed into view, flanked by roving searchlight emplacements and heavily armed guard positions. Li Lixia felt her breath catch momentarily at the unmistakable aura of menace radiating outwards even from this initial perimeter.

"I see they were already expecting our arrival," she murmured, unable to mask the undercurrent of grim resignation lacing her tone.

Beside her, Li Xinjie’s angular profile remained an inscrutable mask bathed in the SUV’s instrument lights. For a long moment he simply scrutinized the gatehouse and its bristling defenses in silence before exhaling a measured breath.

"Hmmm."

The single syllable rumbled between them, somehow managing to convey a wealth of calculated nonchalance in the face of such overtly displayed lethality. Sun Lixia couldn’t quite prevent the fractional upkick of her lips in fleeting admiration for her brother-in-law’s unflappable mettle.

Moments later, the low thrumming cadence of Chinese emanated from the barricaded tollbooth ahead - presumably one of the gate sentries issuing them a challenge. Sure enough, Ren Zirui’s terse baritone issued back through the comm panel linking them to his protective detail riding topside.

"State your business," the sharply accented demand reverberated. "This is restricted territory under authority of the Wolves Syndicate."

There was a fractional pause as Li Xinjie appeared to mull over the appropriate response...before simply shrugging one shoulder in a minute tell of casual dismissiveness.

"Inform your masters that Sun Lixia has arrived on summons," he replied in a deceptively mild tone utterly devoid of inflection. For several seconds, the only sounds were the distant thrumming of idling engine bays and crackle of encrypted radio chatter between the enemy positions.

Then the man took out a communicator, spoke to someone for a few moments before cranking of security barriers being remotely withdrawn. A hissing shunt of hydraulics announced the enormous front gates beginnings to grind ponderously open on their armored tracks.

As the barely-wide-enough aperture yawned before them, Ren Zirui gunned the transport’s engine with a low snarl of surging acceleration. The massive SUV surged forward without hesitation, devouring the barricaded gauntlet with grim, implacable momentum.

From his position behind the wheel, Ren Zirui pinned both Li Xinjie and Sun Lixia with a questioning look through the rearview mirror - the burnished contours of his camouflage war paint casting harsh shadows across the severe angles of his face.

"I will not allow even the faintest threat to come within a hundred meters of either of you," he stated in a tone bordering on ritualistic proclamation. "That old man’s own rage will feel like a tender caress compared to the annihilation I’ll unleash upon any who so much as contemplate endangering you."

Though Li Xinjie remained an impenetrable bastion of lethal focus, Sun Lixia managed the barest quirk of rueful acknowledgment in the man direction. Even in this yawning heart of their most dire peril yet, the famously uncompromising Ren Zirui’s sworn ferocity remained utterly inviolate.

Around them, the looming megastructure of the Wolf Syndicate compound seemed to swell ever larger in the SUV’s floodlights. Guard towers and rooftop sniper hides studded the bleak facade, each one a scorpion-sting of swiveling barrels trailing across their slow advance.

An entire fortress turned inward upon itself - its sole purpose the ceaseless propagation of malign violence, like a slumbering beast awaiting any excuse to awaken in all its immolating fury once more.

It was clear that the higher ups had prepared for tonight, preparing for war to come. But by the time the night ended, they will not know how the war came.

Sun Lixia swallowed hard against the anxious lump lodged in her throat, knowing their gambit would inevitably rouse the beast from its lair this fateful night. The only open question remaining was whether her clan still possessed the precious reserves of strength necessary to put the dread monster down for good this time.

Or be utterly, irrevocably devoured by its slavering jaws in the attempt.
