Legacy of the God of War
Chapter 292: Unleashed Fury
Just as the weight of Zhang Yiming’s twisted revelations threatened to crush them beneath its sheer depravity, a thunderous volley of gunfire erupted from outside the compound’s walls. The old man’s expression soured, his lips twisting into a contemptuous sneer.
"Ah, I see your friends have finally made their presence known," he sneered, his gaze boring into Sun Lixia with undisguised disdain. "You know, my dear, this could have all unfolded in a very different manner."
Turning towards the masked guards, Zhang’s voice took on a razor-sharp edge. "Take them back to their cells and deal with whatever incursion is unfolding out there. Swiftly."
As the guards moved to comply, dragging the shackled captives away, the sounds of battle intensified tenfold. Somewhere beyond the fortress’s walls, all hell had officially been unleashed.
---
Li Chen ducked behind the shredded remnants of a concrete barrier, his heart thundering in his ears as a hail of automatic fire ripped through the space he’d occupied mere seconds ago. Beside him, Ren Zirui crouched in a mirror stance, his grip white-knuckled around the grip of her assault rifle. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
"This is a goddamn slaughter out here!" he shouted over the cacophony, his voice laced with equal parts fury and exhilaration.
Li Chen risked a glance over their meager cover, grimacing as he took in the chaotic scene unfolding before them. Scores of the Wolves’ elite guards swarmed the compound’s exterior, raining down a veritable storm of lead upon the beleaguered Li family strike team.
"Shadow and Deng Chengxi are trapped on the western flank," he shouted back, wincing as a fresh volley of rounds impacted mere inches from his face. "We need to punch through and link up with them before–"
His words were cut off by a guttural roar as a towering figure burst from the smoke and ruin, twin machetes clutched in his meaty fists. Li Chen’s eyes widened in recognition as the hulking brute charged straight towards them, his battlecry shaking the very ground beneath their feet.
"Ren Zirui, watch out! That’s Agent Nineteen!"
The warning was barely out of his mouth before the behemoth was upon them, machetes arcing in a deadly blur. Ren Zirui danced back, his rifle barking in defiance as he unleashed a torrent of fire at point-blank range. To Li Chen’s horror, the rounds seemed to do little more than anger the beast, his flesh parting and sealing in a matter of seconds.
With a snarl of primal fury, Agent Nineteen swatted Ren Zirui’s rifle aside like a child’s toy, his next swing nearly taking his head from his shoulders. Li Chen moved without thinking, his own sidearm thundering as he opened fire on the juggernaut’s back.
The monster whirled, fixing Chen with a feral glare that seemed to strip away any vestiges of humanity. Then he was charging, machetes whirling in a dizzying pattern that forced Li Chen to scramble back with every ounce of agility he could muster.
Somewhere amidst the din, Shadow’s gravelly bellow rang out as he engaged his own deadly adversary.
---
Agent Thirteen laughed, a high-pitched cackle that sent shivers down even Shadow’s granite spine. Her twin kodachi blades glinted in the flickering firelight, slick with gore and reflecting the madness that danced in her eyes.
"Oh, this is going to be such delicious fun!" she trilled, her lithe form swaying with almost serpentine grace as she began to circle her prey. "The great Shadow, trapped like a rat in this pathetic little bolt-hole."
Shadow said nothing, his own twin blades held in a defensive guard as he tracked the deranged woman’s every movement. Though her slender frame belied a wiry strength, he knew better than to underestimate the whispers surrounding Agent Thirteen’s brutality.
This was no mere killer, but a force of preternatural bloodlust given human form.
With a bestial snarl, Thirteen sprang forward, her opening strike a blinding flurry of steel that would have carved a lesser fighter to ribbons in an instant. To her visible frustration, Shadow weathered the onslaught with disciplined economy, deflecting each thrust and feinting counter with almost dismissive ease.
"You’re making this boring, big man!" the madwoman taunted, her voice taking on a distinctly petulant edge as she disengaged for a split-second. "Where’s that delicious rage? That unquenchable thirst for–"
Whatever else she intended to say was drowned out by a feral roar of exertion as Shadow launched a sudden, furious offensive. Thirteen’s laughter died in her throat as she was forced to give ground, her kodachi’s ringing like demented wind-chimes against the sheer, implacable force of Shadow’s two-handed assault.
Concrete cracked and exploded around them as the massive warriors traded blows with steadily escalating ferocity. Neither gave an inch, their battle descending into a primordial slugfest of shattering steel and inhuman endurance.
Until finally, inevitably, one of them would slip just enough for the other to land that first, fateful stroke.
---
Deng Chengxi emptied the last of his magazine into the seemingly endless tide of Wolves pouring over the courtyard walls, his jaw clenched against the strain. All around him, the lifeless forms of friend and foe alike littered the shattered terrain like cast-off dolls amidst the raging storm.
His exfiltration team had managed to punch through the initial defensive cordon, enabling Li Chen’s primary strike force to funnel deeper into the compound itself. But the cost had been horrifically steep, his brothers-in-arms falling in droves to the syndicate’s fanatical defenders.
Another volley of automatic fire shredded the rubble he’d been using for cover, forcing Deng to throw himself in a desperate evasive roll. His armored bulk collided with the ground hard enough to drive the breath from his lungs, but the impact was a small price to pay for preserving his life.
At least for the moment.
Chancing a glance over his shoulder, Deng felt his gut clench at the sight awaiting him. Three absolutely massive brutes in form-fitting bodysuits and expressionless polymer masks stalked forward in an inexorable vee formation, their cybernetically-enhanced physiques auguring nothing but sheer, overwhelming lethality.
The notorious Wolf Triplets had entered the fray – and Deng Chengxi knew with sinking certainty that nothing short of divine intervention would see any of them emerging from this meat grinder with their lives intact.
As if in answer to that macabre thought, the lead triplet raised one hand, palm glowing an ominous crimson hue. Deng Chengxi’s eyes widened in horror as he recognized the archaic sigil etched into the mercenary’s vambrace, the runes pulsing in sickly synchronicity with the eldritch energies now gathering around that outstretched appendage.
Dark sorceries, twisted and forbidden, drawn from the most profane wellsprings imaginable.
The triplet didn’t so much as utter a sound, merely clenched their fist in a minute contraction of effort. An instant later, a roiling vortex of utmost oblivion erupted forth, swallowing Deng and all his surroundings in a blinding tsunami of unholy conflagration.
---
Amidst the raging madness of battle, none were aware of the lone figure lurking in the shadows nearby. A phantom wreathed in soot and flickering darkness, eyes glittering like twin pyres of hate-fueled purpose.
Agent Ten – the master of the shadows, the specter haunting every nightmare – watched and waited as his erstwhile brothers-in-arms tore themselves asunder amidst the compound’s descending chaos.
His time would come soon enough...
