Legacy of the God of War
Chapter 297: Interrupted Reunion
After the initial emotional reunion, the Li family quickly set about freshening up and gathering themselves. They convened in Li Yanyan and Sun Lixia’s suite, eager to get some much-needed rest and nourishment before their return to Shanghai the following morning.
As they sat around the table, plates of food before them, Li Xiaojun emerged from the bedroom, his long beard trimmed and his hair freshly washed. Sun Lixia stood up, a radiant smile lighting up her face.
"My dear husband," she said, her voice soft and filled with adoration, "still looking fine despite the years."
Li Xiaojun returned her smile, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "No one quite as fine as you, my love," he replied, his tone playful.
Li Yanyan rolled her eyes dramatically, a knowing grin tugging at the corners of her lips. "Here we go," she muttered, barely concealing her amusement.
The room erupted in laughter, the tension and sorrow of their earlier revelations momentarily forgotten as they basked in the comfort of their reunited family.
Cen Yuhuan, still a bit shaken from her ordeal, spoke up tentatively. "Thank you all so much for coming to my rescue," she said, her eyes filled with sincerity.
Li Xinjie reached across the table, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. "No need to thank us," he said, his voice warm and reassuring. "You were in that situation because of me, and I’m just grateful we were able to get you out safely."
Sun Lixia beamed at the pair, her expression brimming with maternal pride. "Well, now that you’re both safe, I suppose the next step is for you two to get married," she said, her tone teasing. "I could use a second daughter-in-law, don’t you think?"
Li Xiaojun chuckled, his eyebrows raised in amused surprise. "Second?" he echoed, his gaze shifting to Li Chen. "Don’t tell me our son has already beaten me to that particular milestone?"
Sun Lixia’s eyes twinkled with mischief. "Oh, my dear husband, you’ve missed so much," she said, her hand coming to rest atop his. "Li Chen got married just last month!"
Li Xiaojun’s face lit up with delight, his eyes shining with the pride of a father. "Fantastic! I can’t wait to meet your wife, son," he said, his voice brimming with enthusiasm.
Li Chen, who had been quietly observing the familial banter, felt a warmth spread through his chest. After years of feeling like an outsider, to now be a part of this vibrant, loving family was a dream he had long since given up on.
Li Yanyan leaned back in her chair, a sly grin on her face. "Well, brother," she said, her tone laced with equal parts teasing and affection, "now that you’re finally back, I suppose you’ll have to take over the family estate. Zhu Fengrui has been missing so much of his life trying to manage that massive conglomerate all on his own."
Li Xiaojun waved a dismissive hand, a sheepish smile on his face. "You know I never did have a head for business, Yanyan," he said, his eyes twinkling with mirth.
"Well, you don’t have a choice anymore," Li Yanyan retorted, her lips curving into a triumphant smirk. "It’s your responsibility now."
The family erupted into laughter once more, the air heavy with the warmth of their reunion and the promise of a brighter future.
Li Chen, who had been quietly observing the scene, felt a bittersweet tug at his heart. Just months ago, he had been a live-in son-in-law of the Gu family, mistreated and treated as a servant simply because he was an orphan. Never in his wildest dreams had he imagined that he would one day be reunited with his true family, with a mother, a father, and a twin brother.
The sweet moment was shattered by the shrill ring of Li Chen’s phone. Seeing Madam Tang’s name on the caller ID, he answered with a sense of foreboding.
"Hello?" he said, his brow furrowing with concern.
Madam Tang’s voice crackled with panic. "Li Chen, it’s bad... Some men came here and..." she began, her words tumbling out in a frantic rush.
Li Chen’s heart raced, his grip tightening on the phone. "What? What’s happened?" he demanded, his voice sharp with urgency.
"They were shooting everything and everyone," Madam Tang continued, her voice trembling. "I’m so sorry, Li Chen... They took Zhang Mei, Zhu Fengrui, Mu Lingling, and Zhang Meixui..."
Li Chen felt the blood drain from his face, his mouth suddenly dry. "What?" he breathed, the word barely audible.
"Tang Junjie and I are on our way to the hospital. He was shot," Madam Tang said, her voice strained with fear and sorrow.
The line went silent, and Li Chen stared at the phone, his mind racing with a multitude of horrific possibilities.
Sun Lixia, sensing the shift in her son’s demeanor, leaned forward, her expression etched with concern. "What’s wrong, Li Chen?" she asked, her voice gentle yet laced with a tinge of alarm.
Li Chen looked up, his eyes reflecting the turmoil within. "Get the jets ready," he said, his voice steady despite the turmoil churning inside him. "We’re going back to Shanghai."
Li Xinjie, his own expression darkening with worry, placed a hand on his brother’s shoulder. "What happened?" he asked, his voice low and urgent.
Li Chen’s gaze met his twin’s, the shared bond between them conveying the gravity of the situation. "Zhang Mei, Zhu Fengrui, and the others... They’ve been kidnapped," he said, his words laced with a quiet fury.
The room fell silent, the weight of Li Chen’s announcement settling over them like a heavy blanket. Sun Lixia, her eyes wide with shock and fear, reached for Li Xiaojun’s hand, seeking comfort in his familiar touch.
"But how?" Li Xinjie asked, his brow furrowed in disbelief. "There’s no way Zhang Yiming could have reached Shanghai so quickly."
Li Chen’s expression hardened, his jaw set with determination. "That’s what worries me," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "He must have sent other agents, like the ones we faced here."
The family sprang into action, their urgency palpable as they made the necessary preparations for their hasty departure. In a matter of minutes, they were ushered onto the private jet, their expressions etched with a mixture of fear, anger, and resolve.
As the plane took to the skies, the Li family sat in uneasy silence, their minds consumed by the dire situation unfolding in Shanghai. Li Chen, his fingers drumming restlessly on the armrest, could barely conceal his worry for his beloved wife.
Sun Lixia, her hand clasped tightly in Li Xiaojun’s, offered a silent prayer for the safety of their loved ones. Li Yanyan, her usual jovial demeanor replaced by a somber determination, stared out the window, her thoughts consumed by the fate of her nephew and niece.
Li Xinjie, his brow furrowed in concentration, was already formulating a plan of action, his military training kicking into high gear. He knew that time was of the essence, and they could not afford to waste a single moment.
The tension in the cabin was palpable, the air thick with the weight of their collective fears. They all knew that Zhang Yiming, or rather, Ping Jun, was a formidable adversary, and the thought of him unleashing his sinister creations upon their loved ones sent shivers down their spines.
As the jet streaked through the night sky, Li Chen’s mind raced, his heart pounding with a mixture of dread and determination. He had come so far, had found his true family, and he would be damned if he let Zhang Yiming take it all away from him.
The miles between Beijing and Shanghai seemed to stretch on for an eternity, each minute that ticked by a torment of uncertainty. Li Chen’s gaze was fixed on the horizon, his eyes narrowed with a fierce resolve.
"We’re coming, Zhang Mei," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "Hold on, my love. I’m coming to get you back."
The others, sensing the weight of Li Chen’s words, nodded in silent agreement. They were a family reunited, and they would face this challenge together, no matter the cost.
As the jet touched down in Shanghai, the Li family disembarked with a renewed sense of purpose. They had no idea what awaited them, no way of knowing the true extent of Zhang Yiming’s twisted plans. But they were united, their bond forged in the crucible of adversity, and they were determined to bring their loved ones home, no matter the sacrifice.
The streets of Shanghai were eerily quiet, the city seemingly holding its breath in anticipation of the storm to come. Li Chen, his gaze scanning the horizon, felt a palpable sense of dread creeping up his spine.
"He’s already here," he said, his voice low and urgent. "We need to move, now."
The family wasted no time, piling into the waiting cars and speeding towards their destination. The tension in the air was thick, the silence broken only by the occasional murmur of hushed conversation.
As they drew closer to their target, Li Chen felt his heart racing, his mind conjuring up a thousand possible scenarios, each one more horrific than the last. He couldn’t bear the thought of Zhang Mei and the others in the hands of that monster, and he vowed to do whatever it took to bring them home.
The cars pulled to a stop, and the family disembarked, their expressions grim and resolute. They knew that the battle ahead would be a fierce one, but they were ready, their determination burning brighter than the fires of a thousand suns.
With a deep breath, they set off, their steps quickening as they raced towards the unknown, their only thought the safe return of their loved ones. The fate of their family and, perhaps, the world itself, hung in the balance, and they were determined to emerge victorious, no matter the cost.
