Chapter 305: Grandpa Sun’s Sudden Stroke (2)

The doctor’s ominous words about Grandpa Sun’s abnormally low medication levels hung heavy in the air. While the implications were disturbing, the family was not yet ready to point fingers or voice their most terrible suspicions aloud. For now, their focus was solely on Grandpa Sun’s fragile condition.

Sun Lixia nodded shakily at the doctor. "Thank you. Can we see him?" Her voice was little more than a hoarse whisper, weighted by unshed tears.

"Not at the moment, I’m afraid," the doctor replied with professional solemnity. "He’s in the intensive care unit. We’ll monitor his progress overnight and move him to a private room tomorrow if his condition stabilizes, however unlikely that may be."

A ragged sigh escaped Sun Weilong’s lips as he pulled Sun Lixia into a comforting embrace, allowing his strong sister to briefly crumple against his shoulder. Li Xiaojun hovered protectively nearby, his expression etched with worry and sadness.

"We’ll remain here for as long as it takes," Li Xiaojun stated, leaving no room for argument. "Grandpa Sun needs his family around him now more than ever."

No one objected to the pronouncement. Even the ever-abrasive Sun Gang seemed subdued, troubled by the unthinkable idea that there could be nefarious forces at work beyond the cruel hand of nature.

The long hours of the night blurred together in a painful haze. They took turns sitting vigil at Grandpa Sun’s bedside in the ICU, murmuring prayers and whispered encouragements, willing the once formidable patriarch to fight his way back to consciousness against all odds.

But Grandpa Sun remained frighteningly still, his chest rising and falling faintly with each arduous breath. An eerie quiet blanketed the private waiting room where the rest of the family gathered between visits, broken only by muffled sobs or the occasional shrill ringtone that was quickly silenced out of respect.

Dawn painted the horizon in soft shades of pink and gold while they anxiously awaited the arrival of the doctor. Li Chen sat beside Zhang Mei who had just arrived, his wife’s hand clasped tightly in his own as she rested her head against his shoulder. In her condition, he didn’t want her exposed to the harsh realities unfolding in the hospital.

When the doctor finally entered, his footsteps were heavy, his expression grave. Sun Weilong immediately rose to his feet, dread churning in his stomach.

"What news do you have for us?" Sun Weilong asked, unable to mask the tremor in his voice.

The doctor clasped his hands solemnly in front of him. "I’m afraid Grandpa Sun’s condition remains very serious. However, the test results have revealed some...discrepancies that are quite concerning."

A ripple of tension traveled through the room as all eyes fixed on the doctor with rapt attention. Li Xinjie felt his heart stutter.

"What kind of discrepancies?" he pressed urgently.

The doctor pursed his lips, clearly choosing his words carefully. "We detected an unidentified substance commingled with the medications in his system. Something that should not have been there."

A collective gasp rose from the family as the inescapable truth set in – this was no cruel twist of natural fate. Someone had directly interfered with Grandpa Sun’s treatment, potentially to lethal effect.

Sun Lixia’s face drained of color, her hand flying to cover her mouth as the implication hit her like a physical blow. Li Xiaojun pulled her close, his own expression darkening with cold fury.

"Are you saying..." Sun Fang’s voice was hushed, almost afraid to dare voice what they all suspected. "Are you telling us that Grandpa was...poisoned?"

The doctor spread his hands in a helpless gesture. "I cannot make any definitive accusations. But the presence of this unidentified compound in his system is highly suspect, especially given the timing of his stroke like symptoms."

A tremor rolled through Sun Weilong’s tightly clenched jaw as he fought to control the rage building within him. Li Chen could see the war raging behind his uncle’s eyes – disbelief battling with the painful acceptance that this was no terrible accident.

"I want a full investigation launched immediately," Sun Weilong bit out through gritted teeth. "Every test, every shred of evidence possible to identify what was used against my father and who is responsible." His gaze swept over his gathered family, fire burning in their depths. "If this was an intentional act, I swear on my life the perpetrator will pay dearly."

Sun Fang was already nodding before his father finished speaking. "Whoever did this won’t get away with it. Not while I’m still breathing."

"We can’t make rash accusations yet," Sun Gang cautioned, ever the voice of reluctant reason. "But I agree, we need to get to the bottom of this, whatever the truth may be."

Li Chen felt the weight of the unspoken suspicions pressing down on them all, the proverbial elephant in the room that no one dared address aloud. Could Yang Bojun, despite his despicable behavior, really be responsible for such an unthinkable act against his own father?

The thought turned Li Chen’s stomach, made his heart clench painfully in his chest. If the vile man had indeed struck out against Grandpa Sun, he would face a reckoning the likes of which he couldn’t begin to imagine. Of that, Li Chen was grimly certain.

Over the next several hours, a flurry of activity consumed the hospital as the investigation was set into motion. Samples were taken, documentation was requested, security footage was reviewed with painstaking scrutiny. Sun Weilong coordinated the efforts like a general marshaling his troops, determined to leave no stone unturned in pursuit of the truth.

Li Chen worked in tandem with his brother and the Sun men, quietly gathering information and following every possible lead. Part of him still clung to desperate hope that this was all some terrible misunderstanding, that his grandfather’s condition was simply a result of tragic happenstance rather than malicious intent.

But the more evidence they unearthed, the more that shrinking kernel of hope withered and died within his heart.

Surveillance clips showed an unknown figure dressed as a nurse entering Grandpa Sun’s private room late at night on three separate occasions leading up to his stroke. Each time, the purported ’nurse’ spent over twenty minutes alone with the ailing patriarch before departing.

Cross-referencing staff logs and schedules revealed no such nurse was scheduled or admitted into that area of the hospital during those timeframes. Whoever this intruder was, they had circumvented security protocols to gain unauthorized access.

Further combing of the visitor records unveiled additional damning details. An unidentified fingerprint, not belonging to any hospital staff, patient or approved visitor, was lifted from a bottle of Grandpa Sun’s medication found in his room. A similar unknown print was detected on the personal effects collected as evidence from the same area.

As the breadcrumb trail of truth became increasingly impossible to ignore, a pall of dread and simmering rage descended over the entire family. Zhu Fengrui and Zhang Meixiu arrived to offer their support, both equally horrified by the unfolding revelations about an attempted murder against the Sun patriarch.

By late afternoon, the doctor approached Sun Weilong and Li Xiaojun with the initial forensics report, his face etched into grim lines.

"Gentlemen," he began solemnly, "I’m afraid the analysis has confirmed our worst fears. The unknown substance we found was a rare, extremely potent neurotoxin, designed to induce a catastrophic cerebrovascular event like the stroke your father suffered."

Sun Weilong’s hands clenched into white-knuckled fists at his sides as the doctor continued his devastating report.

"There’s more. We also detected microscopic traces of the same toxin on the lip of the medication bottle, as well as on his personal grooming kit retrieved from the bathroom cabinet. Enough to confirm that it was likely the intentional point of exposure."

A muscle ticked erratically in Li Xiaojun’s taut jaw as he absorbed the words, finally giving voice to the horrible truth they had all been dreading.

"Someone tried to murder my father-in-law," he grated out in a voice laced with scarcely restrained fury.

There could no longer be any doubt – this was no terrible twist of fate, no simple complication of Grandpa Sun’s age and preexisting conditions.
