Chapter 45: A Violent Intrusion

As the night’s darkness began to blanket the city, Li Chen returned home after a long day. He entered his house with a sense of unease; something felt amiss. The air was thick with tension. His instincts flared, and he strained to listen. And then he heard it, faint but unmistakable: muffled screams coming from inside.

Li Chen swiftly moved through his home, following the sounds of distress. As he got closer to his bedroom, the screams grew louder. His heart raced, and he burst through the door.

Zhang Mei was alone in the room, terror etched on her face. Her hands were tied, and she was gagged. Her eyes met Li Chen’s with a mix of relief and fear. But before he could react, his eyes scanned the room, and a chilling realization hit him. The window was shattered, and masked men stood before him, their expressions hidden behind dark masks.

Without a word, the intruders lunged at Li Chen, fists clenched and weapons raised. It was a fight Li Chen hadn’t anticipated, but he was always prepared for the unexpected. The room turned into a battlefield.

The first assailant charged at Li Chen, swinging a baseball bat. Li Chen sidestepped, grabbed the bat mid-air, and swung it back, hitting the attacker square in the chest. The man crumpled to the floor, gasping for breath.

Two more attackers rushed Li Chen simultaneously. One attempted a roundhouse kick, but Li Chen ducked and elbowed the attacker in the stomach. With incredible speed, he twisted and delivered a swift back-kick to the second intruder, sending him crashing into the wall.

Meanwhile, Zhang Mei managed to free herself from her restraints. She joined the fray, picking up a lamp from the bedside table and smashing it over the head of another masked intruder, temporarily incapacitating him.

The room was filled with chaos as the masked men regrouped, surrounding Li Chen. He knew he couldn’t hold back. With a fierce battle cry, he unleashed a flurry of precise and powerful strikes, targeting pressure points and vital areas. With every calculated move, an assailant fell to the ground.

The attackers began to realize that they were outmatched. Panting and injured, they staggered back, their masks askew, revealing their desperate and defeated expressions. Li Chen knew this was his chance.

"Who sent you here?" Li Chen bellowed with fire in eyes that screamed murder.

"You... touched her son"

The words make Li Chen quickly realise that these men were sent by Madame Gu.

"So, Madame Gu sent her goons for revenge? Pathetic."

One of the men managed to speak, his voice strained and bruised.

"You... you... hurt... her son... now you... pay."

"Hurt? I barely touched him. Tell Gu Hua that running to mommy won’t save him from the real world. If he wants revenge, he should bring it himself."

With a final disdainful glance at the battered intruders, Li Chen watched them scramble out of the broken window from which they’d entered. They had learned that attacking Li Chen was a grave mistake. As they fled, he noted that the wounded men limped and crawled, fleeing as fast as their broken bodies would allow.

With the intruders gone, Li Chen’s attention turned to Zhang Mei. He hurried to her side.

"Are you okay?"

"I am now, thanks to you."

Li Chen smiled and helped her to her feet, ensuring she was unharmed. The room bore the scars of the brawl, but they were both safe.

Meanwhile Madame Gu sat in her opulent home, frustration and rage bubbling within her. She reached for her phone and dialed the number of the men she had sent on their ill-fated mission.

"Report. Is it done?"

"Madame Gu, that guy... he can really fight. Why didn’t you tell us that? We should have been prepared."

Madame Gu’s face contorted with anger at the insult, but she knew better than to argue with these men.

"Li Chen can’t fight, trust me. He lived under my roof for years, and even Gu Liang slapped him once. He’s weak, I’m sure of it."

"Then explain why all my men are back here with broken bones. Are you telling me they hurt themselves?"

"I don’t understand what happened. Maybe someone assisted him. It doesn’t matter; the job isn’t finished."

"Well, now you’ll have to pay for my men’s medical expenses because you didn’t warn me that he might have assistance."

Madame Gu’s eyes narrowed, and her knuckles turned white from clenching the phone.

"I already paid for the job, and it’s not done."

"I’ll get someone else to finish the job then, but it’s not going to be cheap. There’s an additional target now, and you’ll need to pay more."

"Money is not a problem, just get it done."

"That’s why I enjoy working with you, Madame Gu. Don’t forget the medical bills for my men."

Madame Gu hung up the phone, her anger burning. Her desperate need for revenge against Li Chen had led to costly consequences, and she couldn’t let any evidence trail back to her. In her world, money could fix almost anything, even broken bones and missing persons.

Madame Gu’s world was built on a foundation of secrets, lies, and illicit activities. Her wealth and status had come at a steep price, and she couldn’t afford to let any cracks in the facade appear. The man she had just spoken to was one of the few individuals who knew the depth of her dark secrets, and he had been instrumental in safeguarding them.

Over the years, he had carried out nefarious deeds on her behalf, using his connections and ruthless methods to keep her hidden from the consequences of her actions. He was the keeper of her darkest truths, and Madame Gu lived in perpetual fear of what might happen if he ever turned against her.

Although the man demanded exorbitant sums for his services, Madame Gu willingly paid, understanding that his loyalty was bought through greed. She dared not cross him or question his fees, knowing that he held the power to expose her sins and bring her entire world crashing down.

Her husband, oblivious to the extent of her deceit, lived in blissful ignorance. If he were to ever discover the true nature of Madame Gu’s actions, it would not only destroy their marriage but lead to her imprisonment, with her fortune and reputation in tatters.

In a world where secrets were currency, Madame Gu walked a precarious tightrope, her future dependent on the discretion of a man who thrived on darkness and deception.

Madame Gu reclined on her opulent sofa, her thoughts as intricate and tangled as the web of lies she had spun throughout her life. From her vantage point, the world appeared to revolve around her, and every action she had taken, no matter how morally questionable, was justified by her unwavering belief that she was securing a better future for herself and her children.

Her ambition knew no bounds, and she was resolute in her pursuit of wealth, power, and influence. The dark deeds she had committed were merely stepping stones on the path to what she considered her rightful place in society. Madame Gu’s heart was shrouded in an impenetrable fortress of self-justification, rendering her impervious to guilt or remorse.

The recent humiliation her son, Gu Hua, had suffered at the hands of Li Chen had ignited the flames of vengeance within her. She sipped her tea, her delicate porcelain cup juxtaposed against the darkness of her intentions. She yearned for Li Chen to pay for his audacity with his life, a reckoning that she believed was not only justified but essential to protect her family’s honor.

Madame Gu had long since lost touch with her conscience, and she knew that if circumstances demanded she repeat her malevolent actions, she would do so without hesitation. Her children were her world, and she was determined to secure their prosperity by any means necessary.

As she savored the fragrant tea, Madame Gu plotted and schemed, her heart as cold and unyielding as the marble floors of her grand mansion. In her eyes, the ends justified the means, and she was prepared to unleash her darkest secrets to achieve her vision of a brighter future.

Little did she know that her relentless pursuit of power and retribution would soon lead her down a path fraught with danger, and that the very darkness she had embraced would threaten to consume her.

As Madame Gu sat in her grand mansion, Xu Zhonghao stood in the shadows outside Li Chen’s home, pondering the recent attack that had unfolded. He had contemplated intervening, but a desire to observe how Li Chen would handle the situation won out. He took a contemplative drag from his cigarette and dialed a number, the voice on the other end picking up with a mix of concern and anxiety.

"What’s wrong?" the voice on the other end inquired, its tension palpable.

Xu Zhonghao, his voice composed, replied, "Not much, just wanted to let you know that some thugs tried to attack Li Chen a little while ago."

The man on the other end erupted with worry and anger, "What? Is he okay? I swear, if a single hair on his head is harmed, you’re in for it."

Xu Zhonghao, unfazed, reassured him, "No need to worry. Li Chen is unscathed; he handled the situation quite capably."

The man on the other end exhaled a sigh of relief and said, "Excellent, who sent the men?"

Xu Zhonhao dragged his cigarette and answered, "His former mother-in-law"

The man on the other’s voice changed and anger evident in his tone, "If they’re going to these lengths, it’s time they learned a lesson or two."

Xu Zhonghao’s anticipation was evident as he suggested, "So, should I pay them a visit and break a few legs?"

The man on the other end, after a moment’s thought, responded, "No, I’ll inform ma’am, and she can decide how to proceed. For now, keep a close eye on Li Chen and ensure his safety."

Xu Zhonghao acknowledged, "Understood," before ending the call. He flicked the cigarette butt away and disappeared into the darkness, enshrouded in the enigma of his intentions.
