Chapter 24: Stage Four

It was another morning, and the duels of the secondary bracket had been rolling forward without him needing to be there for any of them. Lin Xuan was in his room when Lian came in carrying his breakfast tray. She set it on the low table by the window, paused, and turned back toward him with the small folded papers tucked under her arm.

"Lin Xuan. Two delegation invitations arrived this morning. One from Frostmoon Ridge. One from Greenvein Monastery."

He sat up against the headboard, rubbing the side of his face with one hand.

"Who signed them?"

"An assistant."

"Then it was not her."

Lian tilted her head a fraction, the small motion she made when she did not have the context for something but was choosing not to ask. She set the papers on the table beside the breakfast.

"They are courtesies, Lin Xuan. Tea and conversation. There is no obligation. You can decline them if you prefer."

"Decline them. I have other plans today."

"What plans?"

"Cultivation. I want quiet. There is a fight ahead and I would rather walk into it sharper than I am."

She inclined her head and slipped back through the door without further comment.

He ate slowly.

’Mira.’

[ I am here. ]

’I want to break to Stage Four today.’

[ Doable. The pace is fast though. The Karma reaction is going to spike higher than the standard breakthrough. We are looking at fifteen, maybe twenty Karma Celestial added in one shot, instead of the usual one or two. Your dantian is nearly full. Yun Hai’s inheritance has been polishing the inner walls for weeks. With sustained focus and no interruptions you can have the breakthrough by tonight. Probably with vomiting involved. Possibly with you brushing the edge of consciousness. ]

’Then we go for it. Karma can be cleaned later. Today I want to push.’

[ Wise decision. (¬‿¬) ]

He finished the breakfast, stood, drew the curtains across both windows of the outer room, and locked the inner door from inside with the wooden bolt. The meditation robe came out of the chest at the foot of the bed. He spread it across the polished floor of the inner chamber and lowered the lamp wick to a faint glow.

He sat in the lotus posture in the center of the robe. Plain Steel rested on the floor at his left, within reach.

He closed his eyes.

The breath of the Nine Dragons Breathing Art opened slow. Inhalation. Pause. Exhalation. Pause. Each cycle measured something close to forty-five seconds. The sound of his own lungs drowned out the muffled noise of Yuncheng beyond the curtains.

After ten cycles, the system unfolded soft at the edge of his awareness.

’Mira. Run with the data. If anything drifts off pattern, tell me.’

[ Done. ]

The first hour passed in internal silence. The breath synchronized to the heartbeat. The natural Qi of Yuncheng’s air, denser than what he had grown up with at Skyedge, came in through the meridians of the back and settled into the dantian.

By the end of the second hour he began to push. Each exhalation directed the accumulated Qi against the wall of the dantian. Small constant pressures.

The wall held. As expected. Dantian walls did not crack on the first push.

Mira monitored without speaking.

Third hour. Fourth. Fifth.

By the sixth he opened his eyes briefly. The light in the room had moved. Mid afternoon.

His undershirt was soaked through with cold sweat. His palms trembled in a faint, shallow tremor. Concentration held but the muscle fatigue had begun to register at the edges.

’Mira. How are we.’

[ Wall at seventy-eight percent. It is going to give. The question is whether it gives clean or it gives dirty. ]

’What is dirty.’

[ It tears in the wrong place. The Qi spills into a meridian channel that should not be receiving it. You get a month of low-grade discomfort. Not crippling. But it ruins the rest of the tournament for you. ]

’Clean, then.’

He shut his eyes again and shifted the breath to the second form of the Nine Dragons. Deeper. Longer. Less push and more direction. The accumulated Qi stopped slamming the wall at random and began to press at a single point in the lower quadrant of the dantian.

The wall complained.

It vibrated.

Hour eight.

The wall gave.

It was not a sound. It was not an impact. It was the sensation of an old veil tearing clean under a pressure exactly suited to it.

The Qi accumulated across eight hours of meditation poured through the new opening and filled the expanded dantian.

He opened his eyes.

The light of the room arrived a degree more defined. The colors with edges he had not been seeing the day before. The texture of the wall opposite him visible at a level his cultivation had not previously rendered.

’Clean.’

[ Clean, Xuan. (◠‿◠) Well done. ]

’How long did I take.’

[ Eight hours and fourteen minutes. ]

’Good or bad for Stage Four.’

[ The average cultivator in Qi Refining takes between two and four days to break Stage Three to Stage Four without aid. You did it in eight hours with Yun Hai’s inheritance polishing your inner walls in the background. You are well above the average. Do not announce that on the street. ]

’I will not announce anything quietly.’

[ Good. ]

He stood up slowly. The legs took more weight than he had expected. The room tilted by a half degree as the blood found its level again, and he steadied himself against the wall with one hand.

The body felt different. The change was not dramatic. Each muscle a degree denser. The skin a touch firmer. The balance better grounded in the sole of the foot.

He walked to the small mirror above the basin and looked at himself.

Same face. The eyes a grade brighter. The whites of the eyes whiter. Mira confirmed it before he had finished checking.

[ Sword Absolute at fourteen percent. Physical change is marginal but compounding. ]

’I notice it.’

[ You notice it because your body has been adapting for three months. If you had awakened the physique yesterday and broken to Stage Four today, you would notice nothing. ]

’Lucky me.’

[ Hm. ]

’Mira. No.’

[ (◠‿◠) ]

He changed out of the soaked under-robe, splashed water from the basin across his face and neck, and pulled a clean robe over his shoulders.

The inner door opened onto the corridor. The afternoon light from the western window of the outer room landed across the floor in a long pale band.

Lian was in the chair by that window with an alchemical manuscript open across her knees. She lifted her head as the door moved.

"Lin Xuan. Are you all right. You have been locked in there all day."

"Better than all right."

She studied him. Three months at his side had given her a calibration for what he looked like normally. Whatever she was seeing now did not match that calibration.

"...You broke through."

"I did."

She set the manuscript aside, rose, and made him a bow that ran deeper than any bow she had given him in months.

"Congratulations, Lin Xuan."

"Thank you."

"I will prepare a recovery pill. You will have it tonight."

"I will need it."

She nodded once and turned for the small alchemy bench she had set up in the corner of the outer room. He let her work. He sat in the chair she had been using, picked up the manuscript she had been reading, and rested his head back against the wood.

The afternoon light moved across the floor.

Tomorrow, the second day of the secondary bracket. The day after, the first round of the principal.

Today, Stage Four.

’Mira. It was a good day.’
