Chapter 33: Chapter 33: Are You Serious?

Anne Sutton heard her and retorted, "When have I ever acted like I owned the place?"

’I don’t remember anything like that.’

Wendy Chambers said, "What do you mean, ’when’? Have you forgotten? When it came time for selections, didn’t you use your connections? Anne Sutton, if it weren’t for Charles Prescott, how could someone your age have become an attending physician? You just relied on having that fiancé, didn’t you? Too bad... he has a child with someone else now! You’re such a joke! Who in the hospital isn’t laughing at you? It’s hilarious!"

After she finished, Wendy Chambers even let out a couple of deliberate laughs. She said to Anne Sutton, "I’m just waiting to see what a joke you become. Once the Sutton Family goes bankrupt, I can’t wait to see how the great Miss Sutton lives then."

She had just finished speaking when there was a knock on the door.

Anne Sutton looked up and saw Nathan Fawcett’s butler standing in the doorway.

Wendy Chambers glanced at the butler. Since the butler always accompanied Nathan Fawcett during his check-ups, she naturally knew this was someone from the Fawcett Family.

She had overheard Charles Prescott and the others talking last night and knew Anne Sutton was involved in Nathan Fawcett’s hospitalization. ’Are the Fawcetts here to cause trouble?’

’Looks like Anne Sutton’s good days are finally over!’

Wendy Chambers said, "Butler Fawcett, what brings you here?"

The butler glanced at Wendy Chambers before his eyes fell on Anne Sutton. "Dr. Sutton, is this a good time? I need to speak with you about something."

Anne Sutton hadn’t expected the butler to come looking for her.

After all, when she had gone to see Nathan Fawcett last night, she was thrown out before even getting a glimpse of him.

Now the butler was here to see her. ’Could it be... that he’s here to make trouble for me?’

Charles Prescott was the one who caused that whole incident. The butler coming to find her now most likely meant Charles had added fuel to the fire and said things to put her in a bad light.

’That damn man!’

But...

’If I avoid this, I’ll lose the initiative. I might not even get a chance to explain.’

Anne Sutton quickly stood up. "I’m free now."

The butler said, "Please come with me."

With that, he walked out the door first.

As Anne Sutton was about to head out, Wendy Chambers said sarcastically, "Good luck."

It was as if she could already picture Anne Sutton’s downfall.

Anne Sutton ignored her, walked out, and caught up to the butler. She asked him, "How is Mr. Fawcett’s health?"

The butler replied, "He’s awake, but the doctors say he needs to be hospitalized for a few days."

Anne Sutton continued, "So, why did he send for me?"

No matter what, it was always a good idea to find out what was going on first.

The butler said, "Mr. Fawcett hasn’t eaten anything yet. He sent me to find you."

Hearing this, Anne Sutton’s lips twitched. ’Well, I’ll be. So that’s what this is about!’

’And here I was thinking it was something serious!’

At that moment, Anne Sutton couldn’t help but feel grateful for her irreplaceable cooking skills.

It was a good thing she hadn’t taught their family chef everything.

Otherwise...

’Why else would Nathan Fawcett even think of her now?’

Arriving at the hospital room, Anne Sutton followed the butler inside.

The bodyguards outside had been arranged by Charles Prescott, but since the butler was escorting her in now, no one stopped her.

Inside the room, Anne Sutton saw Nathan Fawcett lying on the hospital bed with a dark expression. The food his family had brought for him sat untouched on the side.

Anne Sutton said, "Mr. Fawcett, you were looking for me?"

He looked up at her, his gaze icy.

Even though he had summoned her to cook for him, he still wore a look of superiority.

If she hadn’t already learned the reason from the butler, Anne Sutton would have suspected he was here to take his anger out on her.

Nathan Fawcett said, "I hear you were at work in the hospital today?"

Anne Sutton nodded. "Yes."

"It seems you’re quite happy I’m hospitalized. You’re even in the mood to work." His words dripped with sarcasm.

Anne Sutton’s lips twitched. ’You were ignoring me, so of course I had to go to work. How else am I supposed to eat?’

But she certainly couldn’t say that to Nathan Fawcett’s face.

Anne Sutton said, "I came to find you, but the people outside wouldn’t let me see you. My only choice was to stay at the hospital, work, and try to find out what was going on."

Nathan Fawcett looked at the butler and asked, "The people outside?"

The butler said, "Mr. Prescott arranged for bodyguards outside, fearing you might be disturbed."

Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett understood instantly.

He looked at Anne Sutton and said, "I’m hungry. Go cook for me."

Anne Sutton heard him but didn’t move. She just stood there, looking at Nathan Fawcett.

Nathan Fawcett said, "What’s wrong? Have you decided to give up on the Sutton Family? All it takes is for me to do nothing, and your family will go bankrupt. I just asked you to cook me a meal. Are you refusing?"

Anne Sutton said, "Of course I can cook for you. But I feel I need to explain what happened yesterday."

Since she was here, she had to make things clear.

Nathan Fawcett said, "What is there to explain? If Ms. Sutton doesn’t want to have my child, then so be it. I’ve thought about it. Even if I force you to agree now, force you to compromise, you’d still find a thousand ways behind my back to prevent yourself from getting pregnant."

There was no point in forcing her.

Even without a child, actually...

...it didn’t really matter.

In the beginning, it was just *them* wanting to arrange a child for him!

She was the only woman he could touch. If she was unwilling, what could he do?

He wanted to drive her away, but he was utterly powerless against this woman.

’Without her, I feel like I can’t even survive. I’ll starve to death soon.’

Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett and said, "I never said I wouldn’t have your child. Everyone has been trying to persuade me not to, and Charles Prescott also said that as long as I don’t have your child, he’ll marry me after you’re gone."

At these words, Nathan Fawcett’s eyes darkened. He looked at her. "So you were tempted?"

’No wonder...’

’With Charles Prescott offering terms like that, no wonder she’s been resisting having my child!’

’After so many years of history with Charles Prescott, she finally gets a promise like that. How could she possibly still remember me?’

Anne Sutton was so exasperated she could die. She called out his name directly, "Nathan Fawcett, don’t you get it? I didn’t agree to his offer! I didn’t! Because I refused, he threatened Sharon and put contraception pills in my medicine bottle! He did it on purpose to make you misunderstand. To be honest, I’m really disappointed. I explained everything so clearly to you, but you still believe him instead of me."

As she spoke the last words, Anne Sutton’s eyes grew moist.

After all, while she wasn’t madly in love with Nathan Fawcett, she truly did want to have a child with him.

She never thought he would doubt her intentions because of someone else’s petty scheme.

She had offended so many people just to have his child, yet he didn’t trust her at all.

Nathan Fawcett looked at the unshed tears welling in her eyes and asked, "Are you serious?"
