Miss Witch's Devotion Has Gone… Twisted
Chapter 358: Reluctance
Several months passed without any further disturbances. Even under the surveillance of Movila and Gwen, no anomalies appeared. Loren could finally be reasonably certain that they were safe for now.
During this period, the Church also compensated Loren. While he wasn't in dire need of it now, wealth was something one could never have too much of.
"I'll take you back."
Today was the day for Caroline to return. Compared to letting her go back alone, Loren decided it was more appropriate for him to escort her personally.
It would be faster and safer, and Loren might even encounter other witches along the way.
Loren didn't expect to enter the witches' hideout. That place was under the protection of the Secret Witch's divine authority, making it impossible for others to discover.
Of course, this wasn't an issue for Loren, who possessed the True Sight Eye. In the past, Loren would have been wary that the True Sight Eye's level might be insufficient. Now, that concern had completely vanished. He clearly understood just how high the True Sight Eye's level was. The Secret Witch's orthodox god-level authority simply couldn't block Loren.
However, Loren had no intention of entering. His goal was to gain the trust of the Witches' Church. Rashly barging in would bring harm without benefit.
"Wow..."
Loren flew through the sky with Caroline, who kept gasping in amazement. Being able to fly was quite rare in this world, and Caroline had never experienced anything like this before.
The Gedlan Kingdom was quite far from the Whispering Woods, with the entire Nofica Theocracy, the world's second-largest country, lying in between. Even though Loren's flying speed was considerably faster than a normal crow's, it would still take two days.
They set off in the morning. At first, Caroline was very excited, but after flying continuously until nightfall, she began to find the journey somewhat grueling.
It was quite cold up in the sky. Fortunately, Loren had dressed Caroline in thick clothes in advance, so it wasn't too unbearable.
"It's snowing..."
As Loren flew, snowflakes landed on his face.
Even when it snowed in the God of Bountiful Harvest's territory, it wasn't that cold. Plant seeds wouldn't go dormant, and the snow wouldn't last for many days. Basically, once Christmas passed, the snow would start to melt, and the farmers would resume their day-to-day toil in the fields.
However, this varied by region. At the very least, the farmers in the Nofica Theocracy lived quite happily. Under the influence of the Bountifulness authority, they only needed to put in a little effort to feed their entire families. Even though the vast majority of the grain went to the Church, what remained was more than sufficient. The yield of grain was simply enormous.
Moreover, their daily task wasn't strenuous farming, but diligent prayer. Praying was much less labor-intensive than farming, so they wouldn't get too tired.
Such a scene could only occur in the Nofica Theocracy, a country directly ruled by the Church over its people.
However, the snowfall did somewhat affect Loren's flight. Coupled with the fact that flying for a whole day had tired him out a bit, he ultimately decided to find a place to rest for a while.
"Let's find a place to rest for a bit."
"Okay. As long as I'm with you, anything is fine for me."
After receiving Caroline's response, Loren found a safe place to land. He was still wearing the black robe. He didn't plan to reveal his identity on this trip; otherwise, Loren would cause a sensation wherever he went.
Loren casually found an inn to stay at. Nothing eventful happened during their stay. However, Loren had grown accustomed to electric lights, so switching back to oil lamps here made him feel somewhat uncomfortable.
"Get some good rest. Tomorrow, I'll fly faster. I should be able to get you there before dark."
Today, Loren had flown using raven wings. Even though he was much faster than an ordinary raven, his speed was still limited.
Tomorrow, Loren planned to use the falcon's ability to travel, which should speed things up considerably.
"Mhm."
Caroline lay beside Loren again after a long time. Previously, she would sleep directly in the dog bed by Loren's bedside, which made things a bit inconvenient for Loren whenever he had matters to attend to. Each time, he had to find a way to send Caroline away first.
"I'm a bit reluctant to part with you."
Caroline suddenly hugged Loren and snuggled into his arms. Caroline never concealed her feelings, not even her strange little quirks.
"It's alright. You can come back after you've spoken with your family. This is your home too. You're always welcome here."
"I'm not sure if they'll allow me to come back...
"I came out this time without their permission. After all, the outside world is too dangerous for witches.
"I didn't really feel it when they used to say that, but now I've truly experienced it."
Loren also hugged Caroline and comforted her:
"It doesn't matter. At most, it will just delay our reunion a little. We will unite with you all sooner or later."
"Mhm."
Caroline responded and then fell into a deep sleep.
Flying for a whole day had tired her out a bit as well.
The night passed without incident. When Caroline woke up the next day, Loren had already prepared breakfast for her. Caroline was even more gluttonous than Anna, though her appetite wasn't large and remained within the normal human range.
Loren could understand her gluttony. After all, there really wasn't much normal food in the Whispering Woods on a daily basis.
Even though there were magical beasts, the witches couldn't bear to hunt them. They usually could only eat some berries, living almost like monkeys.
"Let's eat first."
While Caroline was still eating, Loren picked up a small notebook and began writing and sketching in it.
Inside were the Abundant Magic spells Loren had been researching. Most of these spells were related to production, such as Verdant Rapid Growth, which accelerated plant growth, and Return to Earth, which enriched the soil. There were also many spells that could massively increase crop yields.
Loren had written down the correct usage methods as well. Since witches could cast magic bypassing the Orthodox Gods' blockade, with these, it should at least be no problem for the witches of the Whispering Woods to achieve self-sufficiency.
In the future, Caroline wouldn't have to live like a monkey either. Although the living conditions would still be far inferior to these past few days being cared for by Loren, they would be much better than before.
Originally, Loren intended to send a message to the witches of the Witches' Church. After careful consideration, he didn't write anything specific. He simply handed the book to Caroline.
"Remember to give this to your family when you go back. Don't forget."
"Mhm."
Caroline responded and reached out to take it, only to find her hands covered in food.
Loren sighed, took out a handkerchief, wiped Caroline's hands, and then tossed both the handkerchief and the book to her.
"Are you full? If you are, let's set off."
Caroline looked at the half-eaten cake in front of her and suddenly felt reluctant to finish it. Because finishing it meant she would have to part with Loren.
In the end, Caroline still didn't finish it:
"I'm full. Let's go."
Caroline hid the book inside her clothes, her other hand tightly clutching the handkerchief Loren had just used to wipe her hands.
