Chapter 2: Why a Monkey?

There were several monkeys, all of them fighting ferociously.

Before Mamadou’s eyes, this army of monkeys bit, clawed, and hurled stones at one another.

The moment he saw that, fear invaded Mamadou’s heart, and he did what any normal human being would do in such a situation.

Without knowing where he was going or even how he was doing it, the twenty-five-year-old man simply ran away.

He fell, rolled, crawled, got back up, and ran until he was far enough from the noise.

While fleeing, Mamadou moved in a way no human ever would, even if his movements were awkward.

As soon as he felt that his life was no longer in danger, he stopped struggling.

Mamadou breathed heavily before opening his eyes to reality once more.

He looked around him.

Trees stretched as far as the eye could see.

He lowered his gaze.

Instead of seeing a human’s feet, all he saw were the limbs like of the animals he had been fleeing.

The limbs of a monkey.

The instant Mamadou realized that he possessed a monkey’s limbs, he collapsed as if he did not know how to use them.

He stared at the back of his hand while his entire body trembled.

I have to face the facts.

I’ve transmigrated into the body of a monkey.

Damn it, what kind of bullshit is this?

Everything was going well until now.

I worked hard so I would never lack anything. I had a good social position, and the game of my dreams was about to be released.

Just when everything was going perfectly.

As if trying to preserve his sanity, Mamadou searched for an explanation.

My last memory...

Ah, that bastard.

Even though I begged him, he still put a bullet in my head.

This is all his fault.

No, no, get a hold of yourself, Mamadou.

There was definitely someone who ordered it.

As he looked at the forest surrounding him, Mamadou decided to stop thinking for a moment and calm himself down.

He took a deep breath of fresh air, which made him feel a little better.

He concluded that panicking would accomplish nothing.

If this is a dream, I’ll wake up.

If I’ve transmigrated, then that means the possibility of returning to a human body exists.

But if someone is using me for experiments, then when I get my human body back, I won’t forgive them.

The same goes for the people who had me assassinated.

It wasn’t particularly visible, but Mamadou’s brows were furrowed.

He still had trouble believing what was happening to him. To come up with these theories, he had practically thrown common sense out the window.

And although his goals were admirable, he had not yet realized that he was no longer in his original world.

Mamadou tried clearing his throat.

This time, he could feel his vocal cords vibrating and producing sound.

"Ah. Ah. Oh. Oh."

He tried several vocal exercises and realized that it would not take long before he would be able to speak.

I really almost died back there, he exclaimed after fully realizing it.

In novels, isn’t transmigration to a fantasy world supposed to happen to people who aren’t satisfied with their lives?

Some of them being losers?

A company CEO like me has nothing to do with that.

If I had to be reincarnated, why not simply bring me back to life before I was killed?

Or at least put me into the body of a human?

Out of all the possibilities, why a monkey?

I don’t even know what kind of situation I’m in or where I am.

The moment he thought that, he remembered the voice inside his head.

Voices in my head.

I feel like I’ve gone crazy.

How do I make it speak again?

If I remember correctly, it mentioned something about unlocking a status window...

[Would you like to unlock the Status Window?

100 points required.]

[Y/N]

As the voice echoed once again in Mamadou’s mind, he accepted frantically.

Yes.

Yes.

Yes.

[Status Window acquired.

Remaining Points: 200.]

This looks like a video game.

I feel like I’m the protagonist of some manhua.

The only thing missing now is actual skills.

The more things progress, the less I understand my situation.

With all my wealth and my information network, I’ve never heard of an experiment like this.

More importantly, how does this status work?

Do I just think about it?

"..."

Mamadou remained motionless, staring blankly into space.

He appeared to be looking at something absentmindedly.

This immense forest, which had initially been a huge surprise to him, no longer seemed particularly surprising.

After everything that had happened, it was only a forest.

The moment he thought about his status, a translucent window followed his gaze.

[Name:]

[Level: 1]

[Mana: /]

[Race: Monkey]

[Class: Human]

[HP: 100/100]

[SP: 100/100]

[Defense: 6]

[Speed: 5]

[Resistance: 5]

[Agility: 7]

[Points: 200]

[Ability: Evolution]

I’m really a monkey.

The space reserved for my name is empty.

Maybe that’s because I don’t have a name?

Thanks to the status window, his situation had just been confirmed.

The place he had fled from was therefore swarming with others of his kind.

Although the fact that I’m a monkey is a problem, something else is bothering me.

As he examined his status, several details caught Mamadou’s attention.

Most notably his Class, his Ability, and finally Mana.

He wasn’t ignorant.

These were things that simply did not exist in the real world.

Let’s assume I’m a monkey.

The fact that Mana appears on this damned status means I’ve transmigrated to another world.

If this isn’t an extremely lucid dream, then it’s a video game.

I’m tired of being surprised at this point.

It’s still better than ending up as a laboratory rat.

Assuming that’s not already the case.

But the fact that I don’t know where I am means I’m going to have problems.

My chances of survival are practically zero.

Hey, System, where am I?

Don’t you have a cheat to give me or something?

After all, I’m sure this is some kind of mistake.

I’ve lived a pretty good life, haven’t I?

Hey, System?

Mamadou heard no robotic voice.

He wondered whether this was the kind of system that only used pre-recorded messages.

He cursed the System in his heart.

What a useless thing to have.

And this Evolution?

What is it?

[Evolution is your ability to modify your attributes by devouring those of others and forcing a mutation upon yourself, allowing you to evolve endlessly.]

The System’s voice rang out once more.

A gleam lit up Mamadou’s eyes.

Maybe I’m not as screwed as I thought.
