Monstrous Allure: Reborn as the Abyss Empress
Chapter 23 — THE DYING FOREST
Morning sunlight never reached the Abyss.
Instead, pale crystal light washed over the newly awakened Abyssal Nest as workers began another day.
Goblin children chased each other through the central courtyard.
Kobold craftsmen repaired ancient halls that had stood abandoned for centuries.
Orc warriors from the Broken Axe Clan sparred with ogres, their laughter echoing through the stone corridors.
For the first time since her rebirth...
Vespera felt something close to peace.
She stood on a balcony overlooking the Nest.
Not in her Abyssal form.
In her human form.
Long black hair drifted gently in the underground breeze.
Her golden eyes watched her people with quiet satisfaction.
Only the small obsidian horns peeking through her hair hinted that she was anything other than human.
Behind her, Lirael smiled.
"I think they like this form."
Vespera looked down.
A group of goblin children were waving enthusiastically.
She laughed and waved back.
"They seem less nervous."
"They see a queen."
"Not a monster."
Lirael stepped beside her.
"They see both."
"And perhaps..."
"...that's exactly what this kingdom needs."
The System chimed.

A kobold messenger hurried into the hall.
"My Queen!"
"The western scouts have returned."
"They've found another corrupted region."
Darius unfolded a rough map across the council table.
"The corruption isn't spreading randomly anymore."
"It has changed direction."
He pointed toward an enormous green region.
"The Emerald Wilds."
Lirael's face grew serious.
"Impossible."
"Those forests are protected."
"By whom?" Vespera asked.
"The oldest spirit remaining in this region."
Hours later...
A small expedition departed the Nest.
Vespera remained in her human form, riding beside Kragga through winding crystal valleys.
"So..."
Kragga glanced sideways.
"You really can become human."
"I always could."
The orc scratched her chin.
"I preferred the giant snake."
Vespera laughed.
"You're impossible."
"So I've been told."
Behind them, Lirael rolled her eyes.
"You two became friends surprisingly fast."
"We punched each other first."
Kragga shrugged.
"That's how orcs make friends."
Even Seraphine couldn't suppress a smile.
By sunset...
The landscape changed.
Crystal formations gave way to towering emerald trees.
Ancient roots thicker than castle walls covered the earth.
Birdsong filled the air.
Fresh water flowed through clear streams.
Then...
They crossed an invisible boundary.
Everything changed.
Leaves blackened.
Flowers wilted.
Animals lay motionless beneath twisted branches.
The air itself felt sick.
Lirael knelt beside a dying flower.
"The corruption..."
"It's poisoning the forest's soul."
Without warning—
An arrow struck the ground inches before Vespera.
Another embedded itself in a nearby tree.
"Stop!"
A woman's voice echoed through the forest.
"You've brought death into my home."
Branches above them shifted.
A graceful figure descended from the canopy.
She moved as though she were part of the forest itself.
Long emerald-green hair flowed almost to her knees.
Vines wrapped naturally around her arms and legs.
Golden leaves formed a living crown upon her head.
Her emerald eyes, however...
Were slowly turning black.
The System appeared.

"You are the Abyss Queen."

"I felt your power."
"I hoped..."
"...you would never find this place."
Vespera stepped forward slowly.
"We're not your enemies."
Sylvana raised her hand.
The forest answered.
Roots burst from the earth.
Vines lashed through the air.
Every tree around them awakened.
"The corruption follows monsters."
"I won't let it consume my forest."
Kragga stepped forward, gripping her axe.
"Want me to knock some sense into her?"
"No."
Vespera raised a hand.
"Look at her eyes."
Lirael nodded grimly.
"She's fighting something."
Suddenly...
Sylvana screamed.
She collapsed to one knee.
Black veins spread beneath her skin.
The forest shook violently.
Trees groaned.
Animals fled in terror.
Then—
The corruption spoke.
Not through words.
Through Sylvana.
"Another Queen..."
"Another failure..."
"You cannot save what already belongs to the Devourer."
The voice was ancient.
Cold.
Inhuman.
Sylvana clutched her head.
"No..."
"Get out..."
"Leave me..."
She wasn't speaking to Vespera.
She was pleading with the corruption inside herself.
The System flashed urgently.

Vespera's golden eyes narrowed.
She took a single step forward.
"I'm not here to conquer your forest."
She transformed.
Dark mist wrapped around her body as scales spread across her skin and her serpentine tail unfurled across the forest floor.
The Abyss Queen stood revealed.
But her voice remained calm.
"I'm here..."
"...to save it."
Sylvana's corrupted eyes opened.
The forest erupted around them.
The battle for the Emerald Wilds had begun.
