My Childhood Friend Turned Yandere in the Apocalypse
Chapter 106: Ch : The Demon King is Dead
[Task 3 will begin tomorrow. Task type: Role-play dungeon. Please get ready to write humanity’s epic tale against the demon lord.]
The task was finally here and everyone got ready to do their part. Even the people from GBF decided to cooperate this time (though not happily) and things slowly fell into place.
"Shelly, Albus, you are our front runners. Are you feeling alright?"
Rin asked as he walked over to the pair. His aim was to reassure them if they felt nervous, but both Albus and Shelly showed no hint of hesitation.
"We are ready. We heard the explanation more times than needed so I’m sure we can take on the demon king."
Albus assured Rin with a smile on his face.
[Oh my! Aren’t we confident today, Rookie? I guess getting that information early did help you out a lot. You should thank this system for helping you with all this.]
The system appeared suddenly to praise itself. But it had helped Rin this time, so Rin did not mind showing his appreciation.
’You are right. You did help me out a lot with this task. I don’t think any superior helps their subordinates this much.’
Rin exaggerated a bit but the system eagerly accepted the praise.
[You sure have a way with words, Rookie, you are making this system blush by saying all this. But since the system is such a nice entity, it shall take your praise with open arms. Make sure to ask for any help you need in the future as well.]
The system was taking Rin’s flattery a little too well which made Rin worry about it. But Rin had no time for useless thoughts when the sky began to split open and the first wave of demons descended
"Everyone, hold your ground. Stay as far away from the enemy line as you can and fire at them."
the troops nodded before they readied their guns. They aimed at the distant demons and their shots exploded on impact.
"Woah! We hit them from even this far? This is amazing!"
"We cannot get distracted now. Keep fighting and pushing these demons back. We can make it happen."
Loud shouts rang out all around Rin accompanied by gunfire. The only reason their settlement was able to make such shots was because he had modified these weapons.
Rin had spent two whole days (and 3 cups of coffee along with 2 potions) to make as many weapons as he could. He had even pushed himself to his limits and had to be treated by Reina (after getting chewed out by her).
So it was nice to see all his hard work paying off finally.
The third monster wave fell to his weapons, but unfortunately, so did some humans who decided to fight at close range.
Luckily, people quickly noticed what Rin’s settlement was doing and started to run toward safety.
Rin did not feel guilty for harming the humans caught in crossfire. His goal was to ensure the safety of his settlement and any sacrifices that came his way were acceptable. However, that was not the case for everyone.
Some of his people had started to falter as soon as they noticed that they were hitting humans as well as demons.
"S-Sir, I cannot fire anymore. T-There are humans down there-"
"Don’t falter now. If you don’t shoot, then those humans would die for nothing. Most of the humans fighting close-range have started to pull back because they trust our firepower to keep demons away. If you stop now, then they will all die."
Rin reminded everyone. The nervous soldiers grabbed their weapons a little tighter and with a determined expression, resumed firing.
But unfortunately, ammunition was not infinite and there was only so much Rin had enhanced. The supply was nearly exhausted.
’Darn it! Just how many waves of these demons are there in total? Isn’t this like...the fifth wave or so? They must be getting low in number as well. When will the demon king arrive?’
[Did someone say the demon king? Rookie, how did you know that we were approaching the last wave? You sure have great instincts.]
[Ehm, let this system present you with one of its creations- the demon king]
The split in the sky became larger and a wave twice the size of the previous ones. Right in the middle was a twisted form ten times the size of any other demon. One look was enough to tell that this demon was special.
"Is that...?"
"The demon king. Quickly, use up the remaining ammunition The close-combat squad, get ready. It’s time for us to move out."
Rin called and everyone immediately followed his words and got into position. Nothing had gone wrong so far and they finally reached the final step. Rin needed to make sure nothing went wrong here either.
"Shelly, Albus, prepare to run forward. We will clear the way for you."
Rin informed the pair and they nodded before taking their position in the middle of the formation. Rin leaned toward them and gave the signal to continue.
The firing stopped, indicating that they were finally out of ammunition and it was time for the close-combat squad to shine.
These demons stood no chance against the humans trained to fight them.
Rin did not have to do much but keep an eye on the situation. He saw the girls from GBF doing much better compared to their training and Alex was killing more than his share as well.
But the number of demons did not seem to decrease.
"Focus on creating a path to the center."
Rin yelled and Alex nodded. He grabbed his sword and let out a wave of energy, clearing most of the demons in his path.
Albus and Shelly immediately took advantage of this gap and headed toward the demon king. They used all their power to attack the demon king and a huge explosion engulfed the demon king.
"Did...we do it? We defeated the demon king!"
"We survived! I cannot believe that we survived such a deadly task."
People started to celebrate, but Rin did not join them. In fact, the silence made him even more uneasy.
’Is the demon king truly dead? Won’t the system give out a notification the silence made him even more uneasy? Then, is the demon king still alive? If he’s alive, then what would he do now? Counter-attack?’
"Everyone, step back. The demon king is about to launch an attack. Defense team, form a shield right now."
