Chapter 455: Chapter 455

They covered fifteen miles in the first hour, a pace that was utterly unsustainable for normal travelers, remarkable even for enhanced warriors.

"Status check," Satou called out as they burst from the forest into rolling plains. "Cassius?"

"Reserves at eighty percent. I can maintain this speed for another three hours before needing to slow." The vampire’s voice showed no strain despite the sustained sprint.

"Sylvara?"

"Wound is holding. Minor bleeding but manageable. Pain is significant but not debilitating." Her voice was tight but controlled. "Continue at current pace."

Satou’s enhanced perception checked his own status: Legs were fresh, stamina reserves barely touched, breathing elevated but nowhere near maximum capacity, Sylvara’s weight becoming familiar rather than awkward.

"Maintaining speed," he confirmed.

They ran on into the dawn, three figures moving across the landscape with single-minded purpose—reach the settlement before the battle was lost, reach their people before it was too late.

The sun was well up when Cassius’s pace began to falter slightly, his speed dropping from supernatural sprint to merely "very fast."

"Lord Satou," he called back, his voice showing the first signs of strain. " my stamina dropping faster than expected. The holy water burns are affecting efficiency—I’m spending extra energy just maintaining enhanced speed."

Satou moved up beside him, matching pace while carrying Sylvara. "Current reserves?"

"Perhaps forty percent. I can sustain this pace for maybe another hour, but then I’ll need to drop to normal human running speed to conserve energy."

"Then I take the lead now. Drop back behind me and follow at whatever pace you can sustain. When your reserves hit twenty percent, tell me immediately."

"Okay SIr" said Cassius

He dropped back, and Satou accelerated into the lead position, his dragoblin strength and stamina reserves allowing him to increase speed even while carrying Sylvara.

The dark elf felt the acceleration and adjusted her grip slightly. "How are you not exhausted? You’re carrying my weight plus gear and running faster than Cassius could."

"Dragoblin physiology. Enhanced stamina, supernatural strength, efficient energy utilization." Satou’s breathing was still controlled despite the increased pace. "I can maintain this speed for twelve to fifteen hours before fatigue becomes a serious concern."

"That’s... that’s inhuman."

"Technically I’m not human, so yes." A slight smile crossed his face despite the desperate situation. "Try to sleep if you can. Rest will help your wound heal."

"Sleep while being carried at a full sprint through hostile territory?" But despite her skeptical words, Sylvara found herself relaxing against his shoulder, the steady rhythm of his running and the warmth of his body creating an oddly soothing environment. "I’ll try."

Behind them, Cassius maintained position in their wake, his vampire speed still formidable even as his blood magic reserves continued depleting.

[SIXTH HOUR ]

They reached a wide river by midday, the waterway presenting an obstacle that would normally require careful navigation.

Satou didn’t slow down.

"Hold on tight," he warned Sylvara.

His shadow step activated, and they appeared on a large rock jutting from the river’s center. Water splashed up from the displacement. Another shadow step took them to the opposite bank.

Cassius followed suit, he jumped across, though his depleted reserves made the technique less stable—he emerged from the second jump dripping wet and slightly off-target.

"Reserves?" Satou asked as they resumed running.

"Twenty-five percent." Cassius was breathing harder now, his supernatural endurance reaching its limits. "I can continue at reduced speed, but vampire enhancement is nearly exhausted."

"Then drop to sustainable pace. Sylvara and I will continue at current speed. You follow as quickly as you can safely manage." Satou’s tone made it clear this wasn’t a suggestion.

"Lord Satou, I can—"

"You can conserve your remaining stamina so you’re not completely useless when we reach the settlement." Satou’s voice was firm but not unkind. "Running yourself into absolute depletion helps no one. Pace yourself, recover what you can, arrive with at least some combat capability remaining."

Cassius wanted to argue, his vampire pride screaming at him not to be the weak link, not to slow down the group, not to admit he couldn’t maintain the pace but what Lord Satou is saying its the truth they are needed in the settlement, and Cassius knows how satou can change the pace of the battlefield.

"I’ll follow at best sustainable speed," he agreed reluctantly. "Probably six to eight hours behind you at this point."

"Then we’ll see you at the settlement. Stay safe." Satou accelerated further, his dragoblin speed increasing now that he didn’t need to pace Cassius.

Cassius watched them disappear into the distance, Satou moving with desperate urgency toward a battle hundreds of miles away.

Then he settled into a ground-eating lope that he could maintain for hours, following the trail they’d left through disturbed grass and broken vegetation.

—---------------------

[TENTH HOUR - SATOU AND SYLVARA ALONE]

With Cassius no longer setting their pace, Satou opened up to his true maximum sustainable speed.

His legs pumped faster, each stride covering more ground, his enhanced perception tracking terrain automatically while his conscious mind focused on maintaining rhythm and conserving energy.

Sylvara had actually managed to doze despite the jostling, her body’s desperate need for rest overriding the discomfort of being carried at high speed. She woke when Satou adjusted his grip slightly, his arms beginning to fatigue from hours of maintaining the same position.

"How long was I asleep?"

"About four hours. How’s the wound?"

She carefully assessed the pain. "Still holding. Some bleeding but not severe. Your running motion is surprisingly smooth—less jarring than I expected."

"Thats nice to hear " Said Satou as he continued running towards the settlement.

[FOURTEENTH HOUR]

Satou reached the foothills of the mountains as the sun began its descent toward the horizon, t.

"We need to cross the mountain pass," he said, his voice rough with exertion. "Normally it takes half a day of careful navigation. With shadow step, maybe two hours.

"Can you make it through?" Sylvara asked, concern clear in her voice.

"I have to." Satou began ascending the mountain trail

The mountain pass was treacherous—narrow trails between steep cliffs, loose rocks that could trigger rockfalls, sections where a misstep meant falling hundreds of feet.

Satou navigated it at a run.
