Serah / Labyrinth Corridors

Level 7 had the twenty doors.

Serah entered through the fifth — the same one they’d exited from — and ran.

At the pace of someone who has a goal and no patience for the process of reaching it.

The level 6 creatures weren’t there — the level was empty as when they’d crossed it.

Neither were the level 5 ones.

The level 4 ones were.

The unclassified figure she’d defeated with all the remaining Qi of blood magic was rebuilt — the black material recomposed, the blue point of light pulsing again.

Serah didn’t stop.

Right claw to the point of light in the motion of passing — without stopping, without adjusting her rhythm, the strike integrated into her run like someone touching a wall while rounding a corner.

The point of light went out.

The figure disintegrated.

Serah kept running.

Level 3 — the twelve creatures with gray scales and four arms, rebuilt.

Serah looked at them as she entered.

All twelve looked at her.

Serah didn’t assess the formation. Didn’t look for the big one. Didn’t calculate the pattern.

Structural ice burst out in a full radius from her position, covering the entire level in a second.

All twelve creatures froze.

Serah ran over them.

Literally — the creatures frozen in attack position formed an irregular path that Serah used as a running surface, leaping from one to another with the stride learned in the treacherous floor room.

Nine steps.

On the other side.

Levels 2 and 1 — the creatures rebuilt, the same story.

Level 2: tentacles that sought the neck. Serah passed between them with primordial aura active in pressure mode, the same one that had paralyzed four of the nine on the first attempt. All eight creatures of level 2 retreated long enough for Serah to cross without contact.

Level 1: the nine with scales and curved claws. Serah grabbed the nearest one by the neck before it completed its attack motion and used it to block the other eight while crossing the space between the entrance and the opening.

She released the creature on the other side.

The creature looked at her.

Serah was no longer there.

The final corridor.

Short — the same one she and Lira had crossed to reach the center.

Serah followed it until it ended.

Not at the white door to the center.

At a side room that hadn’t existed when they crossed it the first time.

The room had no door — the opening was there, as if the wall had decided it was necessary.

Kai had his forehead resting against the black wall.

"One enemy," he was saying. "Just one. Any kind."

Soft thud of forehead against the wall.

"Whatever. A creature. A trap. Something."

Soft thud.

"I’ve been..." pause. "I don’t know how long. A lot."

Soft thud.

"The empty corridor was unfair. But this is worse."

Soft thud.

"This is specifically designed to make me suffer."

Kai lifted his forehead from the wall.

Saw her.

"How did—"

Serah didn’t let him finish.

She kissed him.

Just Serah’s hands taking his face and the rest following.

The silver markings flared.

Kai took exactly the time it took to process what was happening — which was about a second and a half — and responded.

When Serah pulled away she had the expression of someone who’s just confirmed something important and is satisfied with the result.

Kai looked at her.

"How did you find me?"

"I followed your scent."

"And Lira?"

Serah looked at him for a moment.

"Well..."

Lira dodged the entity’s arm — she’d dodged it twenty-three times in the last few minutes.

The problem was that without magic she couldn’t counterattack in any way that mattered.

The entity watched her with the smile that couldn’t change.

"Can you make another expression?" Lira said, dodging the left arm. "It’s weird hitting someone who only smiles."

The entity didn’t respond.

She dodged the right.

"I’ve been here alone because of a wolf who thinks her mate is doing something he’s probably not doing, in front of an entity that apparently only knows how to smile, and me without magic and—"

She dodged the left again.

"—this is the most annoying thing that’s happened to me in eight hundred years and that includes the sun."

Serah looked back at him with her markings in that specific pulse that wasn’t exactly embarrassment but occupied the same space.

Kai smiled.

He didn’t say anything.

The smile was enough.

Serah looked away.

"That’s all," Serah said.

Kai kept smiling.

Qi active — stable, at the level he’d reached after four levels of combat and one level of productive frustration.

The new techniques registered.

Kai closed his right hand.

Opened it.

Closed it again.

"Finally."

He said it quietly — no extra emphasis, no drama. Just the weight of the words themselves.

He looked at Serah.

Extended his hand.

Serah looked at it.

Then at him.

She took his hand.

Kai looked at her a moment longer — with the smile still there — and kissed her before starting to walk.

"Let’s go get that so-called admin with the weird face."
