The Verdant Sky Academy settled into a tense rhythm as the second week of the escort mission officially began. Vibrant autumn leaves drifted across the sweeping courtyards while thousands of students hurried between the grand lecture halls. Li Yu stood near the ornate stone archway of their private residence and leaned against the cool wall. He was enjoying the crisp morning air and expanded his divine sense to capture the daily flow of rumors.

The academy provided an endless river of dramatic tales. He listened to frantic whispers echoing across the nearby training fields. The brief encounter with the Iron Gale faction from the previous week had spread rapidly through the student body. Young cultivators fiercely debated whether Bai Yun was a hidden genius or just an arrogant fool relying on his expensive hired guards. Li Yu found the polarized opinions were not without merit as he collected the rumors like rare coins to better understand the social hierarchy of the school.

Bai Yun emerged from his quarters a short time later wearing fresh blue silk robes. Today the young noble wanted to visit the academy trading pavilion to spend his allowance and browse for useful resources. Rogan and Lin Xiao flanked him immediately while the veteran butler stayed behind to manage other affairs and secure the courtyard. Li Yu took his usual position at the rear of the formation and followed them out into the bustling streets of the campus.

They arrived at a bustling multi story pagoda filled with merchants selling fragrant pills, polished weapons and ancient relics retrieved from ruins or old battlefields. Bai Yun strolled past the pristine stalls displaying shining swords and glowing elixirs with a bored expression. He ignored the high tier items and stopped abruptly in front of a shabby vendor resting in a dark corner of the first floor. The old vendor sat behind a frayed blanket covered in rusted junk, broken weapon fragments and chipped stones.

Li Yu watched closely from the back of the group and he noticed the faint spiritual fluctuation radiating from the silver bracelet on Bai Yun's wrist just before the young man stopped walking. The ancient soul hiding inside the jewelry was clearly guiding his host toward a hidden treasure but Li Yu didnโ€™t know that. He only knew something was happening from the bracelet that made Bai Yun stop.

Bai Yun pointed to a blackened piece of iron that looked like a broken wheel spoke.

"How many spirit stones for this worthless scrap?" Bai Yun asked with a carefully crafted look of mild disdain. "I need some cheap metal to practice my engraving arrays and this looks sturdy enough to handle a few mistakes."

The old vendor stroked his thin grey beard and named a steep price of five hundred low grade spirit stones.

Just as Bai Yun reached for his spatial pouch to pay the exorbitant fee, a wealthy student wearing golden robes stepped forward from the crowd. The newcomer waved a decorative paper fan and offered a smug smile.

"I will give you one thousand spirit stones for that rusted iron," the golden robed student declared loudly. He turned to look at Bai Yun with a condescending sneer. "The Chen family is currently collecting ancient metals for a new forging project. You should walk away now before you embarrass yourself over a piece of trash."

Bai Yun narrowed his eyes and crossed his arms over his chest. "I saw the item first and I initiated the trade. You think your few extra spirit stones can bully me out of a purchase? I will pay two thousand spirit stones right now."

The golden robed student snapped his fan shut and his face flushed with sudden anger. "You dare bid against the Chen family? You are nothing but a countryside bumpkin playing in a pond too deep for your short legs. My guards will break your knees if you do not step down."

Lin Xiao stepped forward before the wealthy student could signal his retainers. She rested her hand firmly on the hilt of her rapier and released a sharp wave of her King realm sword aura. The cutting pressure washed over the narrow aisle and forced the hostile guards to take a hesitant step backward.

"The Bai Clan does not lack wealth," Lin Xiao stated with a voice as cold as winter ice. "Nor do we lack blades to defend our young master. I suggest you take your spirit stones and find another stall to patronize before this minor disagreement turns into a formal clan dispute."

The golden robed student weighed his options and realized his personal guards were outmatched by the stern woman. He threw a venomous glare at Bai Yun and stormed away down the aisle while shouting hollow threats over his shoulder. Bai Yun tossed a bag of spirit stones to the wide eyed vendor and secured the blackened iron into his storage ring. He wore a triumphant smirk as he turned and led the escort team out of the trading pavilion.

The rusted item likely contained a hidden legacy or a rare crafting material that only the spiritual soul inside the bracelet could identify. Later that same afternoon, the group escorted Bai Yun to the grand scripture pavilion located near the center of the academy. The ancient library housed thousands of glowing jade slips containing martial arts and cultivation techniques passed down through generations. The guards waited outside as they were not allowed to enter while Bai Yun wandered the narrow aisles to browse the collections.

Li Yu leaned against a wooden pillar and listened closely to the rhythmic footsteps of the young noble. The footsteps suddenly stopped followed by the sound of a sharp stumble and a dull thud. Bai Yun had tripped over a loose floorboard in a neglected and dusty corner of the library. The physical impact dislodged a rotting wooden box hidden beneath the floor which split open to reveal an ancient looking manual.

Before Bai Yun could pick up the dusty book, a senior disciple wearing the dark green robes of the Iron Gale faction turned the corner and spotted the hidden item.

"Step away from that manual," the senior disciple demanded while striding forward with an aggressive posture. "That text belongs to the Iron Gale lineage. Our ancestors hid it here many decades ago and I have finally come to retrieve it. Hand it over immediately."

Bai Yun dusted off his knees and picked up the manual with a defiant grip. He projected his Soul Transformation aura and met the senior disciple with a fearless glare.

"You must think I am an idiot," Bai Yun scoffed loudly. "If your ancestors hid this technique here, they would have told you exactly which floorboard to lift. I found this through my own efforts so it belongs to me. You are just trying to steal my fortune because your faction is full of shameless bandits."

The senior disciple roared in anger and summoned a swirling vortex of wind Qi around his right fist. The situation deteriorated into a heated shouting match that echoed across the quiet library but no actions were taken just yet.

Vane heard the commotion and went in with measured steps. He released a focused wave of his Law Integration pressure and the heavy spiritual weight forced the senior disciple to disperse his wind Qi while stepping back against the wooden shelves.

"The rules of the Verdant Sky Academy are the laws we uphold in this space," Vane stated with a calm but unyielding tone. "Fighting inside the scripture pavilion is strictly forbidden and carries the punishment of immediate expulsion. The young master discovered the item so he retains the right to borrow it. Step back junior and learn to control your temper."

The senior disciple gritted his teeth and glared at the white robed guard. He knew he could not defeat a Law Integration expert in a direct clash so he turned on his heel and stormed away while promising that the Iron Gale faction would not forget this insult. The escort team returned to their private courtyard as evening settled over the campus. The glowing lotus flowers in the central pond provided a soft illumination as the four hired guards gathered around the stone table to drink tea. The events of the day left the group feeling rather frustrated.

If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

Rogan grumbled loudly while dragging a whetstone along the curved edge of his heavy axe.

"I swear the boy cannot walk ten steps without stepping on someone's toes," the mercenary complained while taking a long drink from his cup. "He has a target painted on his back with glowing ink that everyone can see for some reason. Finding rare herbs on the road is one thing but picking fights with established factions inside the library is just asking for a bloody knife in the dark."

Lin Xiao nodded in agreement while polishing the intricate guard of her rapier. "It is his attitude that draws the predators. He lacks the grace and the subtlety of a true expert. He flaunts his wealth and his fortune without considering the political consequences. My family sent me here to protect an heir but I feel like I am guarding a walking lightning rod."

Vane sat with his usual rigid posture and stared into his tea. "He relies far too heavily on his bizarre fortune, I donโ€™t know if it's an act or he really is that way. He thinks his luck will always shield him from the consequences of his sharp tongue. But fortune is a fickle wind and it changes direction without warning. We must remain vigilant because the Iron Gale faction will not let these slights go unanswered."

Li Yu listened to their complaints and poured himself fresh tea. He rested his hands on the stone table and offered a calm perspective to his weary colleagues. ๐š๐•ฃ๐ž๐—ฒ๐ฐ๐•–๐›๐ง๐• ๐•ง๐šŽ๐š•.๐œ๐š˜๐—บ

"Fortune favors the bold but it also tests them continuously," Li Yu noted with a smooth and easy tone. "Bai Yun walks a very chaotic path and he attracts conflict like a magnet. But our job is not to teach him manners or correct his personality. Our job is simply to ensure he survives the tests set before him until our time is up. Let him gather his enemies and his rusted treasures. We just need to hold the line when the storm finally breaks until our time is done. Then he will need to rely on himself."

The other guards absorbed his words and found a measure of comfort in his grounded outlook. At the very least, they had a powerhouse like Li Yu to rely on if things truly got dire. The group finished their tea and prepared for the long night ahead and sure enough, the anticipated escalation arrived toward the end of the second week.

Bai Yun received an elegant invitation to attend a private tea gathering hosted by his childhood sweetheart named Su Yin. The event took place in a secluded and highly manicured garden located on the far eastern edge of the campus. The escort team formed a perimeter around the young noble as they walked through the quiet moonlit paths leading away from the main dormitories.

A thick and unnatural fog suddenly rolled over the cobblestone walkway as they approached a small wooden bridge. The ambient temperature plummeted rapidly and the sounds of the academy faded into a dead silence.

Several masked figures emerged from the dense grey fog without making a single sound and spread out quickly. These attackers did not wear sect uniforms and they did not shout any threats. They wore dark leather armor and wielded serrated daggers coated in thick black poison, not even trying to hide the poison, it was front and center. They radiated the cold and disciplined killing intent of professional killers hired from outside the academy walls. The Iron Gale faction had finally escalated the conflict by paying mercenaries to cripple their rival in the dark.

"Defensive formation!" The veteran butler shouted from the center of the group as he drew a straight sword himself. What he could actually do with the blade was yet to be seen but few counted on him to do very much.

Rogan roared a battle cry and charged forward to meet the incoming threat. He swung his twin axes in a brutal display of physical strength and clashed with two of the thugs simultaneously. The heavy impacts sent sparks flying through the cold fog as the mercenary pushed the attackers back with force alone.

Lin Xiao drew her rapier and engaged another masked figure approaching from the left flank. She moved with elegant precision and delivered swift piercing strikes that forced the thug to constantly retreat and parry.

Vane summoned a glowing white longsword formed from condensed Qi and held the center line directly in front of Bai Yun. He used his Law Integration cultivation to cast a wide protective barrier that deflected several throwing knives aimed at the young noble. The clash of metal and the bright bursts of spiritual energy illuminated the dark garden and created a chaotic scene.

Li Yu stood near the back of the formation and kept his dark glaive resting casually on his shoulder. He did not rush forward to join the loud melee, his role was to control the entire area. If he was needed somewhere, he would appear. He was the last line of defense for everyone so it was time to be patient for when he was truly needed. Just then, his senses tracked a much more dangerous and subtle disturbance hiding in the fog directly above them.

A specialized assassin crouched silently within the thick branches of an old weeping willow tree overlooking the bridge. The hidden killer possessed a cultivation level that far exceeded the thugs fighting on the ground, their hidden ace. The assassin drew a small mechanical looking crossbow and aimed a specialized armor piercing bolt directly at the top of Bai Yun's head. While it looked like a mechanical crossbow, the weapon itself was some sort of crafted artifact and powered by the userโ€™s Qi.

The assassin pulled the trigger in the middle of the chaotic noise and the lethal bolt descended through the darkness with deadly speed and perfect precision. Li Yu did not shout a warning or swing his weapon at the attack. He was just too strong for anyone here, even the hidden expert they had sent. He looked up at the falling projectile and flicked his left index finger.

A thread of his Karma Severing Qi shot upward and intercepted the bolt in mid air. The dark energy cleanly severed the force and the physical structure of the weapon in a fraction of a second. The solid metal turned into fine ash and scattered harmlessly into the cold wind before it could even reach Bai Yun's hair.

Li Yu followed up his silent defense by sending another invisible needle of soul energy directly into the tree canopy. The strike bypassed all physical defenses and pierced the assassin's head with surgical accuracy. The hidden killer went completely rigid as the limp body slumped against the thick wooden trunk and remained hidden in the dark leaves.

Inside the intricate silver bracelet, the spiritual old man felt a wave of terror wash over his ethereal soul. The ancient master had sensed the lethal bolt descending toward his host and prepared to burn a bit of his own soul strength to form a shield. But before he could even manifest his energy, he felt the terrifying fluctuation of soul energy erase the threat from existence.

"Do not panic, that guard of yours has everything under control. I am not sure if it is your blessing or curse to have such a being guarding you right now. Iโ€™ll remind you again not to act poorly with him." The ancient soul whispered frantically into Bai Yun's mind. "You were just a breath away from losing your life. Praise your guards for their hard work after this is over."

Bai Yun shivered and felt a cold sweat soak his inner tunic. He had not seen the falling bolt or the hidden assassin but the panic radiating from his usually confident spirit told him everything he needed to know. He stood frozen on the bridge and tried to maintain his composure while his heart hammered against his ribs.

He too didnโ€™t know if he should be thankful that Li Yu was here or to be scared. If Li Yu somehow figured out the source of his rise was this bracelet, he could take it from him. The spirit within said it couldnโ€™t stand up against him, the first time Bai Yun had encountered such an opponent. While he acted arrogant on the surface, he was actually very calculating and measured. All of his abilities and cunning seemed to be worthless in front of such overwhelming power though.

Rogan and Lin Xiao finished subduing the visible thugs a few moments later while the remaining attackers fled into the thick fog once they realized the escort team was far too strong and well coordinated to break through their defensive line. Vane dispersed his glowing sword and lowered his protective barrier while scanning the surrounding shadows for any lingering threats. The veteran butler, having done absolutely nothing all battle, quickly checked Bai Yun for injuries and breathed a heavy sigh of relief upon finding the young noble was unharmed.

"We need to return to the courtyard immediately," the butler commanded with a tight voice. "The tea gathering is cancelled for today."

The escort team formed up and quickly guided the shaken young noble back toward the safety of their private residence. Li Yu walked at the rear of the group with a relaxed smile resting on his face.

โ€˜It feels really good to not have to worry too much. This is the feeling of security that came with obtaining strength.โ€™ Li Yu thought to himself. It had been some time since he was the big fish in the small pond. Feeling that he had the power to mostly control his own destiny was a welcoming change of pace for him. He looked forward to seeing what kind of trouble the final week would bring to the Verdant Sky Academy as tensions increased.
