Kitazawa found the cave where Gaara lay at once.
Gaara was unconscious on the floor. When Chiyo saw him, her face shifted, and she hurried forward to tend to him—but then her expression went stone-cold. The One-Tails, Shukaku, had already been extracted. A Jinchuriki’s life begins to run out the moment their Tailed Beast is gone; without intervention, Gaara would die. The only established cure was the life reincarnation technique.
Chiyo felt the old resolve stir—she was old enough that giving her life for Gaara wouldn’t be a loss—but a problem stopped her. The people beside her were not Sunagakure shinobi but Konoha’s. She worried, on the one hand, that Kitazawa might harm Gaara and, on the other, that Gaara, if he woke, might lash out at anyone nearby. Gaara had been shaped by Rasa’s tests since childhood, and by never sleeping to suppress Shukaku, he’d developed a brutal, volatile temperament. Yet she also knew he would not last the trip back to Suna; his life force was already fading fast.
"I can save him," Kitazawa said, watching Chiyo’s face.
"You?" Chiyo’s doubt showed instantly—everyone knew a Jinchuriki usually died after their beast was taken.
Kitazawa said nothing. He stepped to Gaara, set a hand above the boy’s body, and gathered chakra. He’d learned from the Hidden Mist a method for keeping a Jinchuriki alive after extraction and had experimented with using Yang Release to substitute for a missing Tailed Beast. Normally a portion of the beast’s chakra is left behind, but Shukaku’s chakra was gone—so Kitazawa poured his own Yang Release into Gaara.
A terrifying wave of Yang chakra flowed from his palm. Chiyo’s breath caught; the amount of chakra he used was astounding for a non-Jinchuriki. Slowly, relief replaced shock as Gaara’s color returned and his breathing steadied. He would not die immediately.
Then Kitazawa withdrew his chakra.
"Why did you stop?" Chiyo asked. Even as a medical nin, she could tell the intervention had only delayed the end; Gaara still wasn’t safe.
"The amount of Yang Release required to fully revive someone is astronomical." Kitazawa’s voice was measured—part truth, part tactic. "With my chakra capacity, I can’t sustain it in one go. I need time."
"How long?" she asked.
"Half a year," he paused. "I can take Gaara back to Konoha for treatment."
"No way!" Chiyo snapped.
"If your Suna can save him, you’re free to take him back," Kitazawa replied coolly.
Chiyo was suddenly silent. She was Suna’s finest medical ninja, and by conventional means, she had failed; she would have resorted to the Life Reincarnation Technique if no other option existed. But now an alternative presented itself, and she hesitated—Suna’s leadership was crippled. Rasa was badly injured, and only she and Ebizo could lead. If she died, the village would be destabilized, and other powers like Kumogakure would be tempted to make war.
"Don’t worry, Konoha won’t do anything to Gaara," Kitazawa added. "He’s no longer a Jinchuriki; he has no value to Konoha."
"Then why do you want to save him?" Chiyo asked.
"This is a transaction," Kitazawa smiled. "After I save him, whether he can return to Sunagakure will depend on Sunagakure’s sincerity."
Chiyo felt oddly relieved. His motive was straightforward: he wanted leverage in exchange. That made the problem negotiable—Suna could simply pay a higher price.
"All right," she thought for a moment. "Including the reward for your help this time, I will send someone specifically to negotiate with you later."
"Fine," Kitazawa said casually.
Under normal circumstances, the deal could proceed. But the Akatsuki’s Eye of the Moon Plan had already begun; once its goals came to light, the shinobi world would be plunged into chaos.
"I’ll leave it to you, Kitazawa." Chiyo drew a steadying breath and stood. She had to get back to Sunagakure immediately—the two jonin who had gone ahead would already have sent word home.
Panic was probably already spreading through Sunagakure. Chiyo had more than that to worry about—five of her Jonin were critically poisoned, and she was their only immediate hope. She turned to Kitazawa. During the fight, she had seen Sasori’s poison but had been unable to cure it; Kitazawa, Tsunade’s student and the strongest medical-nin after her, was the only one who might manage it. She had already accepted two favors from Konoha—one more wouldn’t change anything.
"Kitazawa." Chiyo asked bluntly, "Can you cure Sasori’s poison?"
"I can give you a bottle of antidote." Kitazawa considered for a heartbeat and then said, "Wait for me here."
Chiyo nodded. For a medical nin, every formula was secret; she assumed he was going to prepare the antidote. Instead, Kitazawa left the cave with Gaara and Naruto and used the Flying Thunder God to appear at Konoha’s Ninja Academy.
"Naruto, the mission is complete. Continue your training," Kitazawa instructed.
"Okay, Kitazawa-sensei," Naruto said, heading for the training ground. As soon as he’d gone, Kitazawa vanished again with the Flying Thunder God and reappeared at the Konoha Hospital.
He handed Gaara to Yakushi Nono and asked her to stabilize him, then sealed Gaara’s chakra to prevent him from acting—his temperament was volatile, and in the original timeline, only a beating from Naruto returned him to himself. Kitazawa went to the hospital laboratory, prepared the antidote (he hadn’t seen this exact poison before, but he had Sasori to study), and, in less than half an hour, used Flying Thunder God to appear back outside the cave.
"Here is the antidote you wanted." He stepped into the cave and passed the bottle to Chiyo.
"Thank you." Chiyo forced down her surprise—she’d expected it to take much longer. The speed of Kitazawa’s work only underscored the gap between them; Konoha had too many geniuses and powerful ninjas, and Sunagakure felt small by comparison.
"You’d better hurry," Kitazawa warned. "Though it’s slow-acting, it’s potent. An average Jonin only has about three days."
"Thank you." Chiyo hurried off toward Sunagakure. Kitazawa watched her go, then teleported back to the Hokage’s office.
Tsunade’s face tightened at the intrusion, but she relaxed when she saw it was him. "I brought Sasori back," he said without preamble.
"Sasori?" Tsunade blinked.
"Sasori of the Akatsuki—Chiyo of Sunagakure’s grandson," Kitazawa produced a storage scroll. "He’s inside."
"You killed him?" Tsunade blurted that storage scrolls couldn’t hold living people, so she assumed the worst.
"No," Kitazawa explained Sasori’s condition and how he’d become a human puppet. Tsunade shook her head. "That’s...reckless."
"I also brought Gaara back," Kitazawa added.
Tsunade looked up, stunned by the cascade of news. As he finished, she gathered herself and allowed a pleased smile. "It seems Naruto’s current strength is already on par with an average Kage. " Sasori had been Kage-level; that Naruto could defeat him directly spoke volumes. As Hokage, she welcomed the fact—the stronger Naruto, the stronger Konoha. With Kitazawa, who had Wood Release and the Flying Thunder God, she even felt a cautious excitement about what might come in the Fourth Great Ninja War.
"I think we can publicize this widely," Kitazawa said. "It’s time for Naruto and the others to make a name for themselves."
"Won’t it be too early?" Tsunade asked, frowning.
"Fame should come early; Kakashi was this age when his name spread," Kitazawa replied. "More importantly, this news can’t be hidden."
"True." Tsunade considered, then added, "Then be careful—they’ll need protection." Fame had its advantages but also painted targets on their backs. With Kitazawa’s technique, he could mitigate that—giving the students Flying Thunder God kunai, for example.
"Mm." Kitazawa nodded. "I’ll go to ANBU and pass down instructions."
"The Akatsuki’s movements must be monitored closely," Tsunade warned.
"I understand." With that, he used the Flying Thunder God to appear inside the ANBU base.
Kitazawa glanced at the empty office and wondered when Konan would return.
"Asuma," he called, and soon Asuma appeared.
"Kitazawa." Asuma greeted him with a smile. "It’s not often you come looking for me. Is something the matter?"
Although Asuma was the Deputy Commander of the Anbu, Kitazawa seldom sought him out directly—he usually passed orders through Antelope or other Anbu operatives.
"There is very important news. I want you to spread it to every corner of the Ninja World as much as possible." Kitazawa’s voice was flat and deep.
Asuma’s expression immediately shifted to surprise. What kind of news would need to reach every village?
"The news is that Uzumaki Naruto, the son of the Fourth Hokage, has defeated Sasori of the Red Sand, the one who killed the Third Kazekage," Kitazawa spoke slowly.
"Ah?" Asuma’s eyes widened. "You’re not joking, are you?"
Sasori of the Red Sand had become a figure of dread across the ninja world—an Akatsuki member, Chiyo’s grandson, and the strongest puppeteer. Asuma, as Deputy Commander, knew the rumors well. Hearing that an eleven-year-old Naruto had defeated him was hard to accept.
"Would I joke about this kind of news?" Kitazawa replied.
Asuma’s mouth twitched. If Naruto could beat Sasori, then Naruto could beat him too. The thought that the dignified son of the Third Hokage and a Deputy Commander of the Anbu might be bested by an eleven-year-old was mortifying.
"I’ll go make the arrangements now," Asuma said, snapping back to duty.
"Mm. Find me if there are any problems." Kitazawa nodded.
Asuma left at once. In less than an hour the news raced through Konoha. Part of the speed was the Anbu’s efficiency, but mostly the story was simply too explosive—outrageous rumors travel fastest.
At the Ninja Academy, taking advantage of a break, Naruto was already telling everyone in the Genius Class about his fight with Sasori. He couldn’t keep things to himself.
"He can manifest six tails at age eleven?" Hiruzen unconsciously tugged his beard. Naruto was the third Nine-Tails Jinchuriki; Hiruzen knew the previous two, especially Kushina, and Naruto’s performance far outstripped what Kushina had shown.
"I reckon among us teachers, only you and Kitazawa can beat Naruto." Kosuke said with a sigh. "Naruto’s growth speed is simply too fast."
Kakashi wanted to complain—he’d become a jonin at twelve largely because of wartime circumstances. Naruto was different: an eleven-year-old who had legitimately defeated a Kage-level powerhouse like Sasori. Not only Sasori, but effectively the Third Kazekage as well—Naruto had come out of what amounted to a two-on-one battle victorious. It sounded impossible.
"Naruto’s ceiling will likely exceed that of the Fourth Hokage-sama," Maruboshi declared.
"He and Minato are two different styles of ninja," Hiruzen agreed. "Given the current situation, his strength will only grow."
"After this battle, Naruto’s fame should spread throughout the entire ninja world," Kosuke continued, smiling. "He might even earn a title, like the Fourth Hokage-sama."
"Then they’ll have plenty to worry about; I feel like quite a few students in the Genius Class can earn a title," Hiruzen said with a nod.
"Indeed," Chen added, "they will definitely all have them in the future."
The Genius Class buzzed with excitement. They had always known Naruto was strong, but hearing he was comparable to a Kage forced them to re-evaluate what that meant. Most affected was Sasuke. After awakening his Mangekyo Sharingan, he felt he had closed the gap with Naruto. His first thought was, "Why didn’t you call me?" His second was, "Damn it, Naruto beat me to it again!"
Sasuke clenched his fists, uncomfortable and stung by rivalry. The next time he saw Kitazawa, he intended to demand a solo mission—the spotlight was his by right; what sort of Uchiha shirked attention?
