Chapter 1382: Appearing Alone
Hannah asked, "Inside District Nine?"
Gregory Lawrence nodded. "They say mutant beasts ran out from the Blackwood Forest and even injured people."
Previously, there had never been an incident of mutant beasts running out from the Blackwood Forest to attack humans.
Generally speaking, even during the mating season, mutant beasts would only stay within their own territory, attacking only when other creatures ventured into it.
So this event was truly bizarre.
Hannah then asked, "Was it just a single Split-Toothed Ravager?"
Gregory Lawrence recalled the words of those people, "Just one, that appeared on the southern street, and it just so happened to run into Old Campbell’s son."
A high-ranking hunter facing a single Split-Toothed Ravager shouldn’t have sustained such serious injuries.
Unless...
"It was a mating season Split-Toothed Ravager," Hannah concluded. "But that’s even more peculiar. Split-Toothed Ravagers are pack animals; they never appear alone."
The more they discussed it, the more strange it seemed.
Gregory Lawrence couldn’t help but hug his own arms, "Don’t scare me. There couldn’t possibly be other Split-Toothed Ravagers in District Nine, could there?"
Hannah replied, "I’m only speculating, but indeed, Split-Toothed Ravagers don’t act alone, especially during mating season. Each time they venture out, there are at least fifteen of them."
Gregory Lawrence pulled his feet up onto the chair as well, "Fifteen?"
Hannah nodded, her smile beaming, "Are you scared?"
"I..." Gregory Lawrence coughed twice, straightening his back, "I wouldn’t be scared, just a bit shocked, that’s all."
Split-Toothed Ravagers were among the most numerous and common mutant beasts across the stars.
Whether in forests or on abandoned planets after a defeat, all these places could be home to their gatherings.
But one thing was certain; mutant beasts never actively appeared in any human settlement.
None of them.
That included District Nine.
Even though District Nine was adjacent to the Blackwood Forest, such an incident had never happened before.
So Gregory Lawrence imagined a group of Split-Toothed Ravagers running through the streets...
It was truly frightening.
It was like knowing tigers are dangerous, but it’s a whole different matter when one shows up inside your home.
Hannah, however, remained calm.
She walked over to the window, looking down at the situation below.
Those dozen or so hunters had already walked out the door. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
Old Campbell was nowhere to be seen, probably taking care of his son.
Some of the hunters were also discussing the matter of the Split-Toothed Ravager.
Just as Hannah had guessed.
These people also believed it couldn’t have been just one Split-Toothed Ravager.
"Split-Toothed Ravagers are pack animals; they can’t appear alone. But when we got there, we truly only saw one."
"Could it be hiding somewhere in the dark?"
"That’s impossible, Split-Toothed Ravagers always attack directly, they don’t hide."
The voices of the dozen men faded as they walked away.
"By your reasoning, what’s the difference now between District Nine and the Blackwood Forest? The darkness could be hiding countless mutant beasts, it’s like looking for a turtle in a jar..."
A clear unease tinged the man’s voice.
District Nine, now shrouded in darkness, was also enveloped in fear.
The incident of the Split-Toothed Ravager attacking happened on the busiest street. Although every household had their doors closed, the roaring howls of the mutant beasts were real.
Soon, all the lights in the street went out.
Pitch-black, where one couldn’t see their own hand before their face.
