30 Days of Passion and Revenge-Chapter 282: A High Fever and a Broken Heart
Nanny rushed over with a few maids, gasping in alarm as they reached Ethan Blackwood. She bent down to touch his forehead, only to pull her hand back immediately, startled by the searing heat. "He’s burning up... Mr. Blackwood has a high fever! Quickly, call the doctor!"
"Oh, right!" The maids immediately scattered to fulfill her order.
A fever?
Tommy stared at Ethan in disbelief. Just moments ago, Ethan had been punching and kicking with such force that it didn’t seem like he was sick...
So, this was what love-struck devotion looked like when it came to that "rabbit" of his.
The rain continued to pour relentlessly throughout the night, showing no signs of letting up.
Lily accompanied Alex back to the hospital to have his wounds re-bandaged. She waited quietly by his side, her soaked clothes dripping water onto the floor.
"Thank you, Doctor," Alex said politely, standing up after his arm was wrapped in bandages. His rolled-up sleeve revealed the damp fabric clinging to his skin.
"Let’s go," he said.
"Mm," Lily murmured, nodding as she followed Alex out. The two walked side by side down the tranquil hospital corridor.
"There’s a hotel nearby. I’ll book two rooms so we can change out of these wet clothes. Otherwise, we might catch colds," Alex suggested gently, his tone soft.
Lily walked silently with her head down. Upon hearing his suggestion, she finally lifted her gaze and replied faintly, "No need."
Alex’s hand, which was holding his damp jacket, tightened slightly. His warm expression faltered for a moment. "Did you call Alice again?"
Lily looked at him calmly. "Does that bother you?"
"Of course not." Alex forced a smile, though there was a hint of bitterness. "... are you really that worried about her misunderstanding us?"
Between the two of them, did she always feel the need to involve a third person?
When would she finally give him even a small, private space—just for him, Alex?
Again and again, she pushed him away.
"I’m worried about her misunderstanding you," Lily said earnestly. "You’re married now. You should keep her informed so she doesn’t overthink things at home."
Alex’s smile grew even more bitter. "Understood."
Had he been too forward? So much so that she felt the need to guard against him, even slipping reminders into her words?
"Alex—"
Alice Johnson’s voice echoed from the end of the corridor.
Lily and Alex turned to see Alice hurrying toward them, her handbag in tow. She was accompanied by an assistant carrying two sets of clothing. Her usual elegance was replaced by a slightly flustered demeanor.
"Are you alright?" Alice doesn’t greet Lily; instead, she focuses all her attention on Alex. "Alex, can you please take better care of yourself? You’re my husband; can’t you look after yourself for my sake?"
Lily quietly stepped aside.
"I will," Alex replied softly, his gaze shifting to Alice as he reached up to gently smooth her long, curled hair. "You’ve been running around all day. Are you tired?"
His warmth and the natural affection in his eyes clearly eased Alice’s earlier tension. She smiled faintly and shook her head. "Not at all. As long as you’re fine, that’s all that matters."
Lily stood silently on the sidelines, watching their interaction with an unreadable expression.
"It’s just a little rain," Alex said as he took the men’s clothing from the assistant. "Did you prepare this for us?"
"Yes. Change quickly so you don’t catch a cold," Alice urged. Turning to Lily, she added, with a slightly stiff smile, "I’ve also prepared something for you."
Lily instinctively wanted to refuse, but Alex spoke first. "Alice, go with Lily to change. She’s not feeling well."
No one would know if something happened to her while she was alone.
Alice’s gaze flickered between the two of them before she nodded obediently. "Alright."
Change clothes with Alice?
"No need!" Lily’s voice was slightly sharp as she reached out to take the clothing from the assistant. Forcing a polite smile, she said, "Thank you for the clothes. I can change on my own."
"..." Alice said nothing, though her expression turned subtly strange.
The outfit Alice had prepared for Lily was a comfortable tracksuit paired with a coat.
After changing in the restroom, Lily stepped out to find Alice standing near the door, tall and poised. Her makeup was flawless, and her gaze was fixed on Lily, though it carried no discernible emotion.
Alice was the epitome of a refined socialite.
Seeing Alice, Lily instinctively stepped back, her guard immediately up.
Alice’s smile was faintly strained. "Afraid I’ll turn on the cold shoulder again?"
"Dying at your hands would be a waste," Lily replied indifferently, brushing past her. She paused briefly, adding, "But I think someone who’s been through death once wouldn’t entertain such childish thoughts anymore."
Alice’s face stiffened at Lily’s words.
Yes, what good would it do to harm Lily? If anything, it would only make Alex resent her...
"You and Alex..." Alice began.
"We’re just good friends," Lily interrupted, her tone calm as she met Alice’s gaze. "Now and in the future, we’ll only ever be friends."
"Is that so?" Alice smiled faintly, though her expression betrayed a hint of disbelief and caution.
"Thank you for the clothes. I’ll be leaving now," Lily said, walking away.
"Wait," Alice called after her. "Alex said he went to get you a painkiller injection. You should wait for him."
A painkiller?
Lily looked at Alice in surprise, noting the discomfort that flickered across her expression.
In the past, Alice would have been eager to see her leave.
It seemed that after her suicide attempt and Alex’s rescue, Alice had grown even more attached to him. She was now the epitome of docility and compliance.
Perhaps near-death experiences truly changed people’s perspectives.
Walking through the hospital, Alice stayed by Lily’s side. Suddenly, she said, "I’m thrilled now."
"That’s none of my business," Lily replied indifferently, her tone offering no room for further conversation.
"..." Alice was at a loss for words, Lily’s detached demeanor leaving her unsure how to proceed.
The hospital was quiet at night, with few people around. The silence between Lily and Alice was even more pronounced.
Alex returned carrying a box, his smile warm as he approached Lily. "I’ve got the painkillers."
Such painkillers were expensive and not easily accessible without the right connections. Most hospitals would never sell them casually.
"Thank you," Lily said sincerely.
"Let’s head back," Alex said, holding the box as he glanced at Alice.
Alice smiled in agreement. "Alright."
"I’ll stay at a hotel," Lily interjected.
"No, you can’t. You shouldn’t be alone in your condition," Alex insisted. "There are staff at my house who can care for you."
Alice’s smile faltered slightly, but she quickly regained her composure and smiled, "Yes, we have plenty of rooms."
Her emphasis on "our house" was deliberate, clearly asserting her territorial claim.
"I can’t keep troubling you forever. I need to figure things out on my own," Lily replied. Since her family’s downfall, she had grown accustomed to self-reliance.
As for Alex and Alice’s home... she had no intention of becoming entangled.
Aside from Ethan Blackwood, she didn’t want to think about anything else.
"Lily..."
"I’ll be fine," Lily said, forcing a faint smile as she reached for the box.
Alex hesitated, his brows furrowing slightly, but ultimately let go.
"Give it to her," Alice said. "Don’t force a girl to do something she doesn’t want to."
Reluctantly, Alex handed the box to Lily. After a long pause, he said, "If anything happens, call me."
"I will."
Alex and Alice escorted her to the hotel entrance before leaving.
The hotel was part of the "30-Day Memory" chain.
Lily hadn’t expected to end up at a 30-Day Memory Hotel, one of three branches in the city...
She opened the door to her room, placed the box of painkillers to the side, and collapsed onto the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling.
The rain outside continued, its sound loud and steady, clearly audible even through the windows.
What would Ethan be doing right now?
Had he been at the park today? Had he been secretly following her, worried she might be in danger?
Or... did he hate her so much that he’d drive toward her without hesitation?
Ethan Blackwood, what are you thinking?
When no one is by your side, it’s astonishing how empty your heart can feel—void of warmth, just a hollow space...
And it hurts—so much more than the AuroraVirus ever could.
Lily sat up from the bed, staring at a brochure for the 30-Day Memory Hotel and its menu. The branding was elegant, and the hotel’s logo was a cartoon tomato.
All of this... Ethan had created it for her. How could she believe he hated her? That he despised her? That he no longer loved her?
Lily picked up the desk phone, her finger hovering over the keypad, but she hesitated.
What would she even say if she called him?
Ask why he tried to run her over? Ask if he had been at the park? Ask if he genuinely didn’t want her anymore?
How ridiculous...
He’d probably hang up the moment he heard her voice. She’d only humiliate herself.
Leaning back against the headboard, Lily stared at the phone in her hand, her mind blank. She wanted to press the buttons but couldn’t bring herself to do it...
Back at the Blackwood estate, chaos reigned among the staff.
Even the heavens have difficulty intervening when a patient refuses to cooperate with the doctor.
Ethan lay in bed, burning with a fever of 39°C. His flushed face was hot to the touch, leaving Nanny in panic.
Every time the doctor managed to insert the IV needle, Ethan would wake up, pull it out, and fall back asleep.
Again and again...
The doctor was drenched in sweat from the repetitive ordeal. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
Tommy sat on the sofa, shaking his head in disbelief. "Nanny, is he always like this?"
For a grown man to act like this over a fever... it was the first time Tommy had seen such behavior.
