Chapter 206: Little Bunnies

Several professors, experts in their fields, took a look at the notes Yin Yang delivered, and not only did they help make some revisions, but they also helped Xu Mumu reorganize them to look less messy.

Looking at the returned notes, Xu Mumu felt quite moved as she noticed the annotations made on them. Yin Yang indeed handled matters reliably.

"Huo can use them if he wants, but he has to print them himself. They can’t be shown to others." Xu Mumu said earnestly.

"That’s only fair." Yin Yang nodded. These are Xu Mumu’s work results, so it wouldn’t be right for someone else to benefit from them for nothing.

"Then you can print them for him, just deliver them once they’re done." Xu Mumu said with a smile.

After Yin Yang left, Xu Mumu felt relieved. When summer break comes, she’ll reorganize these notes, replace incorrect parts with accurate ones, and then she can contact a printing shop.

During the past few days, Xu Mumu has been instructing a few kids on how to write English essays, and they’ve made considerable progress. She feels quite satisfied.

The kids made such significant progress mainly because Xu Mumu promised them that they could listen to music on the tape recorder soon.

Even though the tape recorder had been sitting at home for nearly half a year, it didn’t dampen the kids’ enthusiasm for it.

Xu Mumu doesn’t mind them using it to listen to music; she quite likes music herself and plans to borrow a couple of CDs from Du Yu next time.

The weather is gradually getting hotter, and as Xu Mumu fans her little brother with a palm-leaf fan, she notices beads of sweat forming on his forehead.

The outside weather seems somewhat overcast; it’s likely about to rain.

"Big sister, when will the mushrooms start growing?" Xu Jiaojiao, flipping through an Oxford dictionary in her hand, looked expectantly at Xu Mumu. Last year, she collected many mushrooms and made quite a profit. Naturally, she plans to collect more this year.

"After the rain, once the sun shines for a day, you can go to the mountains to look for mushrooms. I only know they grow in summer. Whether they have grown now, I can’t say." Xu Mumu said with a smile.

"I’ll go look with my brother once the holiday starts the day after tomorrow." Xu Jiaojiao said. She doesn’t want to miss this moneymaking opportunity; she wants to save money too.

The money Xu Mumu saved for them only amounts to about twenty yuan; it looks plentiful but isn’t much. Especially after starting school in the county, she realizes many things require spending money.

In future, she’ll enter junior high and high school, but her family isn’t well-off, so she wants to earn money like her big sister.

"Off you go, just don’t go too far." Xu Mumu nodded.

"Big sister, would you like to join us in hunting wild chickens and rabbits?" Xu Jiaojiao asked eagerly, knowing her sister usually manages to catch something every time they head into the mountains.

"You’re just craving wild chicken, aren’t you?" Xu Mumu tapped Xu Jiaojiao’s forehead.

"Well, maybe just a bit." Xu Jiaojiao admitted, a little embarrassed.

"I’ll join you. Let’s bring Minglei and the others too." Xu Mumu said with a smile. Their mother can watch her little brother. Although he’s a bit of a handful, Li Caixia is used to it since she looks after him daily.

The weekend came quickly. Xu Mumu put on some old clothes and took the kids up the mountain. There were plenty of wild chickens and rabbits up there, and many villagers came to catch them too. These wild chickens and rabbits were smart – they’d run away quickly and hide the moment they sensed a human presence.

Yet, for Xu Mumu, this wasn’t a problem. Xu Minglei handed his slingshot to Xu Mumu, and his bag was stuffed with rocks he had specially collected. These rocks were roughly the same size and quite round, making them less likely to miss when shot from a slingshot.

Since the kids wanted to catch some game, Xu Mumu led them further into the mountains.

These areas were less frequented by people, thus making it easier to catch wild chickens and rabbits.

"Tiedan, look! Is that a bird’s nest over there?" Xu Minglei, grabbing Tiedan’s shirt, said excitedly. Since the family wasn’t short on food and drink lately, they hadn’t gone up to the mountains much, busy with school tasks. It had been a long time since they had collected bird eggs.

"It is indeed, but by now, the birds must be hatching. Some eggs may not be edible anymore." Tiedan nodded but seemed uninterested.

"Seems like it. Oh well, let’s move on; they’re ahead." Xu Minglei replied, somewhat disappointed.

As Xu Mumu led the group forward, suddenly, a wild rabbit appeared ahead, munching on grass. It ran immediately upon detecting them.

Since Xu Mumu had come specifically to catch some meat, she naturally wouldn’t let it get away.

She pulled the slingshot taut and aimed at the rabbit’s head before releasing the stone.

"Big sister, it’s dead!" Xu Tao said excitedly as he picked up the rabbit.

"Put it in the basket." Xu Mumu said with a pleased smile. They hadn’t ventured far yet, but the harvest was good – the rabbit was quite plump, enough for two meals.

"Sis, sis, over here! There’s a rabbit hole!" Tiedan’s excited voice called out from the nearby bushes.

Upon hearing there was a rabbit hole, Xu Jiaojiao and Xu Tao dashed over.

Xu Mumu followed them. The hole’s entrance was small but well-hidden.

"Big sister, do you think there are baby rabbits inside?" Xu Jiaojiao asked, her eyes sparkling.

"What, you want to raise baby rabbits now?" Xu Mumu teased with a smile.

"If there are any, I definitely would. Raise them to eat the meat later." Xu Jiaojiao said, full of anticipation.

"Minglei, Tiedan, you two go and dig open the rabbit hole." Xu Mumu instructed the two boys to get to work immediately.

In a few moments, the kids opened up the entire rabbit hole. It was pretty spacious inside and lined with dry grass – there were three small rabbits whose fur hadn’t fully grown in yet.

The young rabbits were carefully placed into a basket by Xu Minglei and his friends, along with some of the dry grass from the rabbit nest.

"Big sister, look! They can eat grass now." Xu Jiaojiao said, putting a few wild vegetable leaves by the rabbits’ mouths. Though frightened, the rabbits ate them nonetheless.

"They should be manageable to raise. Let’s take them home and care for them." Xu Mumu agreed with a nod.

In these times, raising livestock was regulated. Families usually were only allowed a couple of chickens. However, rabbits could be raised quietly, as long as no one found out.

Rabbits grow quickly and reproduce at a rapid rate. In some places, they’re even considered a nuisance. Raising them for meat should be completely feasible.

"Big sister, how do we raise the rabbits?" Xu Minglei asked eagerly, wanting to raise them himself.

"We’ll have dad make a cage for them. Put them in there when we get back, and we can ask grandma what they eat." Xu Mumu replied after pondering since she hadn’t much experience in this area.
