A Night of Desire-Chapter 184: Pursuing a Wife, a Long Road Ahead
After saying all that, Clara Grant paused for a moment, then asked, "Cherie, the person I left you with—are his people taking good care of you?"
When Seth Quinn suddenly heard her mention the person she’d left Cherie with, he instantly realized she was talking about him. A thrill of excitement went through him. He subconsciously straightened his legs, sat up a little straighter, and pricked up his ears to hear what she would say next.
But her next words took an unexpected turn. All she did was ask if his people were taking good care of Cherie!
Though a little disappointed, he continued to listen intently. ’Since she’s already brought me up,’ he thought, ’she’ll definitely ask about me next, right?’
No one had coached him on how to answer, but that didn’t faze Cherie.
"They’re great, Big Sis. They’re taking really good care of me, very thoughtful." As he spoke, he glanced at Seth Quinn and added, "He’s... right here now."
Though he didn’t specify who "he" was, Clara Grant knew instantly it was Seth Quinn. She lowered her gaze and simply replied with a nonchalant, "Oh."
Seth Quinn had been listening intently, but when it came to him, all he got was a single, nonchalant "Oh." His expression immediately darkened again.
Seeing his uncle’s expression suddenly darken, Cherie grew anxious. He really wanted to hint to his big sister that she should say something with a bit more feeling for their uncle’s sake.
Of course, he couldn’t say that outright, so he could only ask subtly, "Do you want to talk to him, Big Sis?"
Hearing Cherie ask this, Seth Quinn perked up and listened intently again, even preparing to reach for the phone. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
But on the other end of the line, as if terrified Cherie would hand the phone to Seth Quinn in the next second, Clara Grant spoke in a rush, "No, no, I don’t want to talk to him. Cherie, I’m hanging up now. Get some rest and take care of yourself. I’ll call you again next time. Bye-bye."
Cherie hurriedly called out "Big Sis!" a few times, but the call had already ended.
The joy that had filled Seth Quinn’s heart instantly turned to disappointment. His expression grew even darker, and a dangerous light glinted in his half-lidded, hawk-like eyes.
’This woman,’ he thought. ’Am I some kind of monster? It’s just a phone call. Does she really have to avoid me like the plague?’
The others exchanged glances, then all turned to look at him in unison, too cautious to speak.
Skylar Hayes’s expression was a little strained. She tried to smooth things over with a laugh, saying, "That Clara, honestly. Why did she have to hang up so fast?"
"Oh well, she’s filming, so she’s busy. She probably had to get back to work," Sienna Hale added with a light laugh.
"Mmm, that must be it," Jenna Quinn chimed in.
After the three of them had spoken, silence fell once more. The atmosphere was a little quiet, and a little... cold.
After a long while, Theodore Quinn, who had been silent until now, stood up and said to Skylar Hayes, "Since you’re here, why don’t you stay for dinner?"
Skylar Hayes quickly stood up as well, politely declining with a smile. "Oh no, Brother Quinn, it’s still early. I should be going."
"You’ll just be by yourself if you go home. It’s more lively here. Besides, it’s just a casual dinner. Let’s just consider it proper etiquette for the groom’s side, this being the first time we parents have met."
Skylar Hayes found it difficult to refuse. On top of that, Sienna Hale and Jenna Quinn were also urging her to stay, and Cherie was hugging her leg, pleading with her.
So she decided to stop putting on airs. They were already family, after all, and they would likely be seeing a lot more of each other. To refuse again would make her seem petty.
"Sienna, why don’t you show our guest around? She must be bored sitting in here," Theodore Quinn then said to his wife.
And so, Sienna Hale led Skylar Hayes out, with Jenna Quinn and Cherie following behind them. The four of them left the living room.
Theodore Quinn turned to Seth Quinn, his gaze filled with meaning.
He started to head upstairs, but paused when he reached his son. Raising an eyebrow, he remarked, "Winning over your wife... it’s a heavy burden and a long road ahead!"
With that, he continued on his way upstairs.
Seth Quinn watched his father’s retreating figure, feeling rather glum. ’Why did Dad’s tone sound like he was gloating over my misfortune?’ he wondered.
