Chapter 45: Mercenaries

After almost two hours of conversation between Elise and Light, Light could finally retire to his room. Elise had specially offered to give him the most luxurious room, and when Light entered the room, he thought this place was luxurious.

It was amazing how different it was outside and inside, and how well a larger heat source was still penetrating the room.

The Roan group was doing a very good job.

It must have been quite difficult to take back this hotel from the zombies. Or rather, it must have been very difficult to build it after they took it back from the zombies.

He was already able to get the information he wanted. Elise had said that she would send someone special to Manchester and buy the information, and in the deal, they had made with Light, it was said that if those men were captured, the community that captured them would be provided with enough food for at least 100 days.

This meant that the war effort of the survivors would be strengthened by the possibility of Light’s supplies.

In addition, Elise agreed to vouch for Light with the huge amount of supplies he gave them in advance, and thus the fame of the [Scavengers] group increased enormously.

In short, Light managed to kill not two but three birds with one stone, without lifting a finger.

Before the transmission, Light openly told Elise that he could see people’s souls, and with that, 13 people were cleansed from Elise’s group, and when they said cleansed, they meant cleansed.

Each of these 13 people was killed as painlessly as possible, even their bodies were burned in the middle of the street, all for a single message:

"This is the end of anyone who would betray the Roan group."

Of course, Elise did not blindly believe Light, and in just half an hour, with a little research, she found out that these 13 people had stolen food and drink, and even harassed and raped other people, men and women alike.

Death was inevitable for them.

This was an easy way to showcase Light’s potential, and the confidence of every member of the Roan group in him was at an all-time high.

However, Light could finally rest, he first checked his room for cameras and found nothing, but he checked the room twice more just in case, and as soon as he was sure there was nothing, he took off his mask and clothes and took a hot shower.

Then he lay down on the bed picked up his mobile phone and sent a text message to Lawrence:

"Lawrence, are you there?"

Almost ten seconds later, there was a reply, and Light was at peace once more, seemingly unperturbed.

"Old Man: Yes, young master, is there a problem?"

"No, I just wanted to check, my plan to become a merchant is very detailed and going well, I’m spreading the name of a group called Scavengers, that’s us of course."

After Light’s reply, the two continued to chat for almost 25 minutes, exchanging messages back and forth about what was going on, with Light finally closing the conversation with the following words:

"Remember, Lawrence, any time you think any human near your house is in danger...kill them, shoot them without a second thought. Protecting my sister is your first priority."

With that, the message ended and Light stared at the ceiling. It might have been the bravest he had felt in a long time, stalking like a rabid dog those who had left him for dead before returning to the past.

On top of that, he was finding solid people he could trust, and in just one day he had even managed to grow his group’s reputation. He was definitely close to creating a safe environment, a strong environment where only good intentions could exist.

An oasis in every sense of the word.

Light opened his eyes to the sound of muffled tapping in his ear, looked up at the ceiling, realised he had fallen asleep and suddenly got out of bed, put on his mask and then opened the door to the room.

"Good morning Mr Arah, I hope you slept well." Elise was waiting in front of the door, looking at Light.

"Good morning ma’am, let me get dressed for a minute." Light said suddenly and with that he left the door ajar and went back into the room.

He took off his mask and dressed with his back to the door put the mask back on and left the room. Looking at Elise, he said, "Thank you for not trying to see me." and asked her to lead the way.

After a short time, the two entered a room and Light noticed six people in the room while trying to understand what was going on, Elise started to speak:

"These are the people who will fulfil your first wish. We have already sent four groups of 10 people each around Birmingham, in short, we will bring you the places where there are likely to be zombies covered with snow. The four of them would like to request food from you privately, and of course, they will make you an offer."

Light seemed curious after hearing these words, and after turning his head to the four standing in front of him, he said, "Speak up then, let’s hear it."

"I am the leader of the group, Charles, a former mercenary, and these are my group members...the survivors. We are not bad people and we know how to kill, the lady Elise was big-hearted enough to give us a chance and we wanted to ask you, is the Scavengers group accepting new members?"

Light’s ears perked up a little at the news, but he knew they still had a test to pass.

"That, old man, depends on you and your team." Light said, and then, without even waiting for them to say anything, he put his inspection skill into use, and what he saw was something that helped him laugh.
