Chapter 552: Forbidden Love [II]

The Dragon Knight had his eyes closed when Elaina arrived at the second World Tree’s roots. He looks asleep, but based on Elaina’s observation, he isn’t; he just has his eyes closed and is keeping an ear out for his surroundings.

As soon as Elaina got close enough, the Dragon Knight spoke without opening his eyes and asked her a question.

"Hello, benefactor. It seems you have decided to visit. Perhaps you have some business with the pixies?" he asked, probing into Elaina’s reason for being there while still looking like he was still asleep.

Elaina nodded. "Although I don’t have business with the pixies at the moment, I do have business with you, Mr. Dragon Knight. Would you indulge some of my questions?"

"Please, go ahead, Benefactor. I don’t mind any questions as long as they are within my knowledge. Of course, I would apologize if I couldn’t satisfy your questions, but I will try my best to provide the necessary answers you seek."

Elaina pulls out the harmonica from her pocket and shows it to the Dragon Knight. He might not have opened his eyes in any way, but Elaina noticed he seemed to be surprised when she pulled it up.

"Do you perhaps know this instrument?" Elaina asked, still probing and not entirely giving her reason.

"It’s a harmonica, isn’t it? What about it?"

The Dragon Knight seems to be feigning ignorance at first, but Elaina is quite sure she had evoked a reaction from him earlier when she showed the harmonica. He just needed more reason to react to it.

Elaina put the harmonica to her mouth and starts performing the song she has been practicing every single day. At first, the Dragon Knight didn’t react at first but as Elaina continues to perform and play the music, the Dragon Knight could not hide his astonishment at Elaina’s music piece. It doesn’t even count his shock at seeing the illusions that were conjured in the surroundings while the music plays.

The moment Elaina finished playing, the Dragon Knight had already descended from the branch and is now approaching Elaina.

"How did you learn that piece of music? Who taught you that?"

Elaina puts down the harmonica and looks at the Dragon Knight. "Perhaps you are familiar with this booklet in my hands?"

His eyes went wide the moment he saw the booklet before him. He was not expecting to see it again before his eyes.

"How...how did you get that?" the disbelief is very clear on his face.

"It seems you are familiar with this booklet, as I suspected. As for where I found this booklet, let’s just say...after you were rescued, I found it here, alongside a worn-out harmonica of elven origin."

"Miraiya..."

Elaina frowns as she hears a name-sounding word. "Pardon?"

"That booklet and the worn-out harmonica that you have found are the belongings of an elf named Miraiya. She is the one who made that harmonica and the one who composed that music that you played earlier."

"Looks like you know this elf..." Elaina glances at the booklet in her hand.

"Indeed, I am. She is someone that I could not simply forget. Someone whom I was longing to see once more."

"Did something happen to this person?" Elaina asks for more information.

"She did not die...maybe. It’s been so long since we last met and it was before I was almost killed by a lance and get stuck impaled by it on the World Tree’s trunk for centuries. Who knows where she is and her current status right now."

"So this booklet is something that belongs to that person...but why is it here in the first place? Did you have this booklet before and hid it before you suffered the century injury?"

"I can’t remember. I thought she kept it with her when she left. I didn’t have any idea that those two items that she keeps on using and important to her has been left behind here. She never said a thing about leaving it behind."

Elaina sighed. Despite the little bit of information she received just from the little tidbits she heard, it is still not enough. Therefore, she decided to probe further and try her luck whether this Dragon Knight would tell the story and reveal his connection to this elf.

"Can I ask further on what your relationship with her?"

"Relationship...well, we do have a bit of relationship if you can say it was one. However, I can’t say it is friendship as it already transcended past friendship already...but I also cannot say that it is on the level of being lovers as we never reached that level either. However, one thing I can say is that...we have an intimate time together that no friends can actually do."

"But you never became lovers in the end?"

"Becoming lovers is out of the question. After all, we dragons and elves are not supposed to be attracted to one another. We both might be long living species to the point that we are close to immortal...and yet, we cannot form a relationship beyond friendship as opposite sex. As a dragon and to an elf, love is considered as forbidden."

Elaina frowned. She knows that humans and elves are not banned to have relationships together and even other species are fine with this which also resulted with hybrids races like halflings and yet this is the first time she have heard of the elves and dragons to be banned from becoming lovers. It doesn’t make sense at all. Not only are dragons powerful and considered to be godly in terms of their capabilities, but they are also beings that are said to have transcended godhood at times.

So why does the elves are not allowing them to have relationships to one another when you can even form a powerful hybrid of dragon and elf once the two races unite? There must be something or a missing info she is not aware of for this to actually happen.

"Do you love Miraiya?"

The Dragon Knight was not expecting Elaina’s question. He was not prepared for her to ask her that question.

"...I think so..." the Dragon Knight is not even sure and seems to be doubting his answer.

"What? You think so? Why so indecisive?"

"No, no...I am not..." despite his reasoning, Elaina does not easily forget what he just said. It is very clear he is very indecisive about his feelings for this elf and yet she can feel him longing for her.

"Perhaps you are still doubtful on your feelings for this woman, but I can tell as a fellow woman, that this elf, has been in love with you. After all, why would she leave behind something that is precious for her? Why not bring it with her after leaving and why leave it behind? You said it yourself that the booklet and the harmonica are items that are all important for this Miraiya person...and yet, here we are and those items are on my hands."

The Dragon Knight remained silent, he couldn’t even stare at Elaina directly.

"And just as you should know as well, Mr. Dragon Knight, it seems that this Miraiya has a task for you."

The Dragon Knight frowned. "A task?"

"Remember the music I played when I arrived here? I recently found out that this song was actually missing its half. And the half of this song...is not yet created."

"What?"

"You heard me right, this music is still missing its half. And from the looks of it, that is the main reason that the harmonica and even the booklet was left behind here."

"What do you mean..."

"Isn’t it obvious enough? This Miraiya you are talking about left these precious objects behind for you to create the second half of the music and to complete the song... and perhaps receive the hidden message she kept inside the song for you."

Although what Elaina have said is technically something she is not even sure if true...but just based on the interactions and even the missing song’s half, Elaina has a rough guess on what Miraiya wanted to actually happen.

"She left these tools for you to decipher her message behind. I know its been centuries since then...but considering that even Elves are also a race with longevity similar to a dragon, it might not be too late."

"But...I don’t even know how to play a harmonica?" the Dragon Knight shook his head.

Elaina grinned. "Then perhaps it is time for you to learn how to do so."

On the other hand, an elf from a region that couldn’t be perceived by humans and any other races on the land seems to have noticed a shift in the surroundings. She has been living for so long that even her golden hair has turned to white after she became ancient enough.

However, despite the changes in the air, she only shook her head...after all, she has no idea whether the one she is waiting for is still alive.
