Chapter 155: I’m even better at being unreasonable than she is"_1

Some things happened very suddenly. During occasional dinner gatherings, Shen Jing often overheard discussions.

"Are you going to the funeral?"

"His family isn’t having a big send-off. An elder from the family will go; I won’t."

"You want me to go alone? Nie Yanzuo, what about you?"

"Go where? What funeral?"

"The Wei Family’s funeral. Wei Jiafu... Uncle had been in critical condition in the ICU for a long time. They’re probably holding the funeral the day after tomorrow."

"No wonder I haven’t seen the Wei siblings for so long. How could he pass away so suddenly?"

"They couldn’t find a suitable liver donor for a transplant. What good is money then?"

Zhou Luchen blinked slowly and stood up to leave the table.

Suddenly, the private room fell silent. Everyone grew cautious, afraid of saying something wrong that might offend this formidable figure.

Shen Jing glanced at the man’s retreating figure. He seemed as indifferent as a calm river, everything about him appearing so tranquil.

After walking a few steps, he turned back and called out to her, who was still in a daze, "Let’s go home."

"Oh."

Shen Jing thought Zhou Luchen was fine.

Inadvertently, her gaze met the deep black of Zhou Luchen’s eyes. A strange unease made her stand up in a panic. Her high heel wobbled, and she almost fell.

Only after steadying herself did she slowly catch up to his pace.

"Are you going?" Shen Jing asked softly. Would he attend his ex-girlfriend’s father’s funeral?

"Let’s not talk about it."

The corridor was silent. Light spilled onto the man’s silhouette, accentuating the smooth, handsome lines of his shoulders. Dressed all in black, he emanated a sense of gravitas and distance.

Shen Jing had twisted her ankle. She walked slower and slower, almost unable to keep up with him.

"Zhou Luchen, my foot hurts, slow down."

Zhou Luchen turned to look at her.

She leaned against the wall with one hand, bending over to fix her shoe.

The diamond-chain Jimmy Choo kitten heels, black, made her exposed feet look even whiter and more delicate.

Zhou Luchen handed his suit jacket to his bodyguard, then walked back and scooped her up into his arms, enveloping her securely.

His physique was tall and well-defined, and his embrace emanated a strong sense of security.

She nestled securely against Zhou Luchen’s chest, inhaling the scent from his shirt—a cool fragrance she found herself increasingly craving.

Zhou Luchen looked down at her. "You know it’s easy to twist your ankle in those. Shouldn’t you wear them less often?"

Shen Jing took a deep breath. "This way, it’s easier to splash through puddles."

Zhou Luchen felt annoyed yet couldn’t bring himself to scold her harshly. "You’re really silly."

Shen Jing felt quite silly herself.

How could she not be?

He carried her all the way to the hotel entrance, where the car was already parked, and placed her in the passenger seat.

Shen Jing took a breath, about to rub her ankle.

He leaned down slightly, effectively trapping her. With one hand braced on the seatback, he stared at her, his expression unreadable.

Shen Jing’s heart skipped a beat under his gaze. She lifted her chin and looked back at him.

He whispered, "Satisfied?"

Satisfied? Shen Jing thought. She had only twisted her ankle because his gaze had startled her. Pointing to her side, she asked, "Could you help me with the seatbelt?"

Zhou Luchen snorted. "Don’t you have hands?"

Shen Jing smiled, her hands fumbling slightly as she looked at his face, so close to hers, before replying, "I do. Of course, I do."

There was a subtle hint of disappointment in her voice.

Zhou Luchen leaned over, pulled the seatbelt across her, and patiently fastened it.

"You’re really something, always needing to be indulged to avoid throwing a fit," his voice was icy cold.

Shen Jing leaned forward slightly, whispering in his ear, "Thank you, President Zhou."

He didn’t react. After habitually pinching her cheek, he closed the door with one hand—CLICK—then walked around the rear of the car to the driver’s seat.

Shen Jing felt sleepy. If she didn’t speak, Zhou Luchen wouldn’t initiate conversation either.

The ride was unusually quiet. Halfway through their journey, the silence in the car was occasionally broken by the DING of a smartphone.

Zhou Luchen’s phone rang, but he kept his attention on driving without looking at it.

Shen Jing glanced sideways, her gaze dropping to the center console, where she saw two characters: Wenxin.
