A Wrong Surrogate for the CEO-Chapter 115: Incomplete memory
Lara’s memories did not come back all at once. It started from the beginning, about her family, how she grew up, how she met Mike.
In a flash, she remembered the betrayal and how her ex husband had thrown her out of the house, despite knowing that she had nowhere else to go.
Lara remembered the pain, the cruelty. She remembered how destitute she was. How her grandmother, who had been her left chance, had died.
Lara recalled how she lost everything because of Mike and Tolu.
Her heart started to pound in her chest.
Everything Curtis told her about what her ex husband and ex best friend did was the truth. They had lied to her, made her homeless and destitute. Hell, they had almost ruined her life.
Lara gasped as memories after memories streamed into her blood, her bones. It sank into her bones.
Curtis was instantly worried about the look on her face. "What’s the problem, love? Is anything the issue?" he asked.
She shook her head as she stood up, not caring about the fact that she was naked.
Curtis stood up after her, and Lara slammed a hand over her mouth as tears filled her eyes. .
"Talk to me, baby. Come on," Curtis insisted, taking a step closer.
Lara turned teary eyes to her husband.
"I...my memories...they’re coming back. I am starting to remember," she managed to say, pushing past a lump in her throat.
Curtis felt a leap in his chest. He gently walked towards her, grabbed her shoulders softly and led her to sit on the couch.
Then he walked up the stairs, grabbed a blanket and slipped his legs into shorts before walking back down the stairs.
He tucked the blanket around her shoulders to cover up her naked body, and sat beside her.
Curtis gently took Lara’s hand in his.
"Take deep breaths, my love. Don’t force it. Let it come to you naturally," he said softly. Lara’s eyes were still filled with tears as she nodded at him, but she said nothing.
Curtis didn’t let go of her hand as she sat there, reliving the horrors of what happened to her in the past.
Very slowly, the memories morphed into her deciding to get sperm infused at the hospital. Lara remembered how excited she had been about it, and how she has successfully managed to select the sperm of a good looking model.
When her memories flitted down to where she was told that she had been injected with the wrong sperm, Lara’s tears ceased. The recollection went on, and then she met Curtis in her head.
Her eyes went wide when she recalled how rude he had been to her, and how they had both hated each other.
Unable to stop herself, Lara stared at the man sitting beside her and holding her hand.
How could the man in her memory be so different from the man she had come to know and love since she woke up from the coma?
As more memories come, the difference between the Curtis in her head and the one she stared at was so much, and Lara could not take it anymore.
She slowly pulled her hand away from his grip and stood up. The blanket was wrapped tight against her body, and her heart thumped loudly in her chest.
"Who...who are you?" she asked. Her voice came out as shaky.
Curtis stood up and stared at her. There was a slight frown on his face.
"What do you mean? I am Curtis, of course. Your husband," he stated.
Lara shook her head at him.
"No. I mean...why are you so different from the man in my memory?" she asked again.
Curtis started to have a bad feeling about the whole thing.
"Listen to me, baby. I don’t understand what is going on, but I need you to talk to me. I am the man you’ve always known. I am not different. What do you... remember?"
His question floated in the air between them, but Lara said nothing. There was a weird look in her eyes, and the terrible feeling in Curtis’s guts spread faster, seeping into his bones.
Lara’s memories had stopped. She didn’t remember everything, but she had enough material to work with.
She stared at Curtis and said: "You are not my husband."
Curtis’s stomach dropped at her declaration. His lips parted as he tried to speak, but Lara held out a hand to stop him.
"You lied to me. I...I don’t even know who you are. You just...oh God. Oh my goodness. I got infused with the wrong sperm. It turned out to be yours and you were... you were so rude about it. I can’t even...why would you lie to me about that? Why the hell did you tell me that we are married?!"
Lara snapped at Curtis, and her chest heaved with anger. The memories had stopped coming, and the last thing she recalled was them fighting about the pregnancy and deciding to sign a contract about it.
Everything else was a blank space.
Curtis’s expression however, was filled with horror.
"Lara. We got married. I remember what you’re talking about but that was when we first met. We’ve gone through a lot since then, and both of our feelings have changed. We fell in love, and here we are. I didn’t lie to you. I never did," his voice was filled with urgency, but Lara didn’t believe him.
Until she remembered the rest of what had happened between them, until her memory got updated from where it just stopped at, Lara was never going to believe him.
Never.
So she took several steps away from him.
"Don’t. Don’t try to mess with my head again. I can’t... fucking hell. I am just your surrogate, am I not?"
Curtis felt as though his heart was cleaving into two.
"Lara. Please. Your memories are not complete. You need to calm down. Don’t jump to conclusions," he pleaded, his voice breaking as he spoke.
But Lara wasn’t listening to him. She had believed him for months, only to find out that he was lying to her.
There was one more thing she needed to confirm. Just one.
"Show the contract," she deadpanned. Curtis went still. Very very still.
"Baby. That contract doesn’t matter anymore. We nullified it. I love you, Lara. I love you so fucking much and you know it. Don’t...stop jumping to conclusions."
She narrowed her eyes at him.
"Show me the fucking contract!" she yelled.
Curtis took a step closer. "Lara..." 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
"Don’t you dare, take another step closer to me. Show. Me. The. Damn. Contract," she snarled at him.
Curtis’s heart sank.
Without saying another word, he made his way into his study and grabbed the document he should have destroyed a long time ago.
Lara was trembling in the blanket as she waited for him. She felt disgusted, and in that moment, she hated herself for even sleeping with him.
Curtis walked back out with the document. "Lara please," he implored.
She said nothing as she held out her hand.
Curtis could feel his entire world tilting and going out of control as he handed the document to her.
And as Lara read the agreement she made with her husband several months ago, as she read the agreement that was supposed to mean nothing to either of them anymore, her heart broke.
She made up her mind.
Lara turned determined eyes to Curtis. "I don’t care about the rest of the memory. As long as I don’t remember anything else than what I just recalled, I will not be staying with you. I have no idea how deep your lies run, and until I remember, I will have nothing to do with you."
Then she took a deep breath.
"I’m leaving."
