Chapter 116: Lara left

Curtis’s heart dropped into his stomach.

Lara’s words settled around him, and his stomach churned with panic.

His jaw dropped open, and Curtis had to blink several times as if he couldn’t believe his eyes.

Hell, he couldn’t believe his ears. "You’re leaving?" he repeated Lara’s words.

Lara held his gaze resolutely, and it was obvious that her mind made up.

"Yes. Yes I am. I can’t stay here anymore, not when you’ve been lying and keeping secrets from me for months. You can hire a nanny to look after the kids, and as for the surrogacy fee, you don’t need to pay it anymore. I don’t want your money, Curtis. Have a nice life," she deadpanned and started to walk up the stairs to pack her clothes.

Curtis stepped before her, halting her steps. His eyes were wide with panic and fear, and he tried to hide his trembling hands as he spoke.

"You’re making a mistake. Your memory is not complete yet. Don’t just... don’t judge me over half truth. Please, baby. You need to remember every single thing before you make a huge decision like this. I never lied to you. Never."

Lara’s expression remained unchanged.

"There is nothing you can say to convince me, Curtis. I am a grown woman, and I will make my decisions myself. I think you’re lying to me still, and until my memories return fully, I will deal with the consequences, if there are any, of choosing to leave you now. So get out of my way, and don’t make this harder for yourself."

Curtis’ world tipped dangerously. He felt as though he was standing at the edge of a cliff.

Lara looked away from him and walked to the stairs.

And when she came down a few minutes later with a half full suitcase, her hand bag and nothing else, Curtis knew that if she left, if he allowed her to walk away...Lara might never come back.

But the determination in her eyes was so strong, that Curtis knew that nothing could stop her.

Her brain had betrayed her — betrayed them — by making her memories incomplete, and now he was going to suffer for it.

She walked towards the door silently. Curtis tried to will himself to move. He tried to walk towards her, block the door and prevent her from ruining his life by walking away.

But his entire body had turned into lead. He couldn’t move, could not even breathe.

"Lara..." he managed to call out, desperately wishing for her to turn around and walk back into his arms.

Lara didn’t turn around to look at him as she spoke.

"Goodbye, Curtis."

She walked out, and as soon as the door closed behind her, Curtis world tipped over the edge of the cliff, and as he fell, he felt as though he was drowning in an abyss that has no end.

Lara’s heart was hurting so bad.

Since she had woken up from the coma, Lara had never felt that way before.

And she doubted if the pain she had felt at Mike’s betrayal was as devastating as the one slicing through her bones as she turned her back on the man she loved and walked away.

Curtis had lied to her.

He had deliberately decided not to tell her about the contract between them, about the fact that they hadn’t gotten married out of love.

The only reason why they were a couple was because she was his surrogate.

Lara’s heart cleaved into two.

Surrogate.

All these while, she had believed him when he said he loved her. She had trusted him with all of her heart, looked after the kids like they really truly belonged to her.

Only for her to find out that she had been nothing but a sperm holder. Someone hired to carry the babies to term and nothing more.

She didn’t take her car, wanting nothing to do with him or anything that reminded her of him anymore.

So Lara walked out of the massive mansion she had grown to love, and even though she felt as though she had made the right decision, Lara was still drowning in pain.

How could he have made her love him when it had all been a lie?

How could she have been so stupid to fall for his honeyed words and sweet lies?

The tears that she had been trying to hold back finally spilled over and ran down her face. What was she supposed to do now?

Where was she supposed to go?

Lara had no one, no where to go. The one place that had been her safe harbour was Curtis’s house, and there was no way in hell Lara would go back there.

So it was back to square one for her. Right where she started when Mike had cheated on her and left her destitute.

Lara was homeless again.

The tears slid down her face more rapidly. Mind numbing pain wrapped around her lungs, and no matter how many times she tried to draw air into her body, she couldn’t.

Her body was giving up on her. And as if the universe was enjoying her pain, rain started to fall.

It started small at first, but instantly became a full fledged storm. Heavy, painful raindrops pelted Lara, and even though she was still standing in front of Curtis’s gate, even though she knew she should take shelter from the rain, Lara didn’t move.

She could not bring herself to walk back into that house like the man she had been falling in love with for months hadn’t deceived her.

So she stayed under the storm, letting it soak her skin and seep into her bones.

When Lara’s legs could no longer support her standing for so long, when her entire body felt rubbery like she had been standing in the storm for decades, Lara slid to the bare floor.

And with no one around to witness the raw pain that was slicing into her over and over, Lara broke down and let the pain consume her.

She let herself go.

And the unending abyss filled with the pain of betrayal swallowed her whole.
