Chapter 29: I prefer a private life

Seeing the older woman’s teary eyes, Lara didn’t ask any questions further. The urge to inquire, the desire to unravel the mystery and the earnest curiosity taking a hold of her reservation, she suppressed it.

She stood up and went to her room. She felt tired and needed a siesta. She doesn’t understand something. It initially started with being rejected at the altar and perhaps other things followed.

A bodyguard delivered a dress to the mini villa. Ms Benny took it to Lara’s bedroom but didn’t wake her up. She saw Lara sleeping and preferred to leave her until the time approached to leave with the young master.

When it was an hour before leaving, Ms Benny returned to wake Lara up. She stood up and went for a bath. When she got back, she found the box containing the dress.

She brought the dress out and was shocked, the latest limited edition of Ivan? This dress is definitely expensive.

He bought it, it’s her favorite colour, red! How did he know she likes that colour? Did he just choose a random colour and it was a coincidence with her favourite?

When she glanced at herself in the mirror, after putting on the dress, she could not believe she was staring at a woman she recognized to be herself.

This was her, back in her university days. So beautiful, the outstanding student and many said she’s a combination of brain and beauty.

Seeing herself now, she’s sure of the beauty again but she cannot be too sure of the brain aspect. She looked attractive and classical.

She applied a light make up on and used a red lipstick, such that it matches with her dress. She styled her hair into parts, leaving the tips curly.

Her dress was long and fitted, giving a glaring attractiveness to her curvy shape. Her pair of shoes were made of the highest quality leather, a designer high heels shoes.

She glanced at herself in the mirror one last time before stepping out of the room. Curtis was already waiting for her to step out and when he saw her, he glanced at her briefly and looked away.

The bodyguards held the door for her and she slid in. The car was cold, fully air conditioned. She was riding in his car with him for the first time and she just stayed at the side, not even glancing by the side to see Curtis

"Where’s your wedding band?" Curtis asked. If he was introducing her to his family as his wife, it only means that they needed to make it appear real.

"Here" Lara replied, opening her clutch and producing the neatly placed diamond ring still in its box. Curtis saw it and said "Slid it into your finger"

Lara nodded and did just that. She saw he was not wearing his own ring and she said "But you aren’t wearing a wedding band yourself" she stuttered.

If they are in this marriage together, it only means that if she wears a ring, he should wear one too. It takes two to be married after all.

Curtis momentarily paused. It’s been a long time since he explained himself to anyone. He does his own things his own way without telling anyone why and when he did it.

"I prefer a private life," he replied simply. He doesn’t think he would ever be wearing a wedding band no matter what happens. And giving her one was not done from a loving heart.

They are married because of fate and compulsion. He doesn’t want his kids born as illegitimate children. Once all is done, they go their separate ways.

He is not a man who wants a woman by his side. And if she at this time does have a glimpse of what happened back then, he is not in the slightest mood to talk about it.

Lara didn’t say anything else. Of what use is it for him to wear a wedding band? They aren’t married for real. Whatever they made others to think, it’s a fake feeling, it isn’t going to last.

Curtis’ phone chirped and he glanced at it. He chuckled softly before answering his phone "... alright honey, I’ll be with you shortly..." he laughed as he hung up.

Lara from her split vision could tell that he was happy at the call. His smile was beautiful and his laughter soothing.

So despite his stone cold personality, there’s still a part of him that knows how to smile?

They soon arrived at a giant gate, as his chauffeur drove past the gate, Lara looked straight ahead, a beautiful big manor was situated in the large expanse of land.

The house was massive, there were servants who were dressed in uniform and they all stepped forward when the young master arrived.

Even bodyguards stepped forward and stood, creating a path in the middle that Curtis would pass through.

Before stepping out, he glanced at her briefly and said "You look splendid" . He wore a poker face and he simply accessed her body within seconds and looked away.

Lara was caught off guard. She lost her composure as the words choked in her throat. She nodded and forced a smile, such a smile that covers up one’s confused state of mind.

Curtis sensed her uneasiness and a smirk spread across his face. Thank goodness, they’ve only come to visit his family. There won’t be an outsider present.

He can’t imagine being with a woman that would make him lose face before guests. He turned to glance at her again, with a soft sigh.

"Though we are not genuinely married, I need you to put up the act before my family. Be natural and let things go in normalcy. It’s just a year and all of these will be over" he explained.

She’s been married before. She should know how to behave herself before her in-laws. He doesn’t need a session of tutoring to make her know that.

"Sure," Lara replied, gently pushing backwards a strand of hair that fell over her face. That’s the least of the things that Curtis should get bothered about.

He nodded and said "Thank you" as his eyes leisurely lingered to her belly. She’s sitting next to him in the car, it’s because of those little fellas in there.

Curtis alighted from the car and first walked over as a bodyguard quickly held the door for her. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Curtis stood and stretched out his hand, helping her step out of the car delicately. He glanced at her and forced a smile briefly.

Lara also forced a smile. Looks like it’s not going to be easy for her as an actress. She’s arrived as an actress and this Manor is the stage or location as the case may be and his family are the audience.

She hopes her acting skills earn an award at the end of that evening dinner. She sighed as her palm suddenly became sweaty.
