Abyss Summoner-Chapter 42 - 40: The Fuse
The night was hazy.
The entire field had become a bloody slaughterhouse. A group of people huddled together, their bodies trembling, eyes filled with a look of despair.
A little girl, her eyes red, looked up at her father and said, "Daddy, I’m so scared... this is a dream, it must be a dream, right?"
Her father, a middle-aged man, had just witnessed his wife being killed by corpse beetles. Two of the insects had pounced on his beloved, a kind woman who didn’t even have the chance to resist before her organs were torn out, leaving her in a gruesome state.
They had survived the darkest seven days, but just a step away from hope, they were separated by life and death. The man, with eyes full of tears, was born to an ordinary family, working four jobs during the toughest times, yet remaining optimistic and positive. At this moment, he buried his head deeply on his daughter’s shoulder, crying like a child.
A dream?
He too wished this was a dream.
......
Feng Zhiyong’s face became serious all of a sudden. He looked around and said to a nearby officer, "How many people do we have left? Is the ammunition sufficient?"
The officer wiped the blood off his face and slowly replied, "There are over eighty people still able to fight. The brothers from units three, six, and nine have all been wiped out. Although ammunition is not lacking, it’s only effective against the larvae."
"We can’t resist, we have to retreat!"
"Retreat?" Feng Zhiyong frowned and glanced at the Mother of Corpse Beetles, then said in a deep voice, "With their speed, even if we retreat, where can we retreat to?"
"Then what do we do?" The officer was choked up; several of his close comrades had perished today. His voice trembled, "Is there really nothing we can do?"
Feng Zhiyong did not answer, his eyes also filled with bitterness.
The Mother of Corpse Beetles was terrifying. In these few days of the eradication action, he had never seen such a frightening insect. Every leg of the insect shimmered with a green poisonous glow; just a random swipe, whether it was an ordinary person or an elite soldier, survival was impossible.
Things looked grim.
Feng Zhiyong’s heart was filled with fear; he closed his eyes, understanding that warfare was not something to be feared. As soldiers, their duty was to fight!
The most fearful thing was knowing from the start that victory was impossible. This situation was what truly made people feel utterly hopeless.
"Sigh..."
The surrounding temperature suddenly dropped, as if falling into an ice cave, making the hairs on everyone’s body stand on end. Feng Zhiyong opened his eyes and saw a gigantic shadow.
It all came too suddenly; the shadow looked so terrifying. Even though it was just a phantom now, it still incited fear.
Where did it come from?
Could it be?
Feng Zhiyong was suddenly shocked, thinking of a person’s silhouette, and he quickly looked towards Chen Feng, his pupils shrinking to thin lines.
What did he see?
The phantom gradually solidified into a monstrous spider-like creature, its spiked legs sharp, with long, menacing horns and a hideous, ugly head, exuding a terrifying aura akin to an Abyss Demon.
And behind it was a familiar figure.
No need to ask, he understood that the only one who could summon such a terrifying creature was... Chen Feng!
Only a Summoner could call forth a monster so fearsome!
"Tap, tap..."
A sound of stepping was heard as the Demon Hunting Spider appeared in front of Chen Feng. It was jet black, as if it had just crawled out of a grave, filled with a decaying aura. Its eye sockets seemed like two clusters of cold flames, icy, ethereal, emitting an oppressive force that warned strangers to keep away.
It was the Demon Hunting Spider.
This creature was a hunter that fed on demons, roaming through every corner of the Abyss. Even in the harsh Sulfur Hell, its presence could be found.
The Demon Hunting Spider possessed the following traits: poison, armor-breaking, and spider web.
The night grew ever deeper.
Before being summoned, the Demon Hunting Spider was feeding, its mouth still holding a small piece of limb—was it an elf? Minotaur? Or perhaps some other dark creature? In any case, as long as it was meat, they liked it all.
Fair Contract.
The contract could be used at any time. Within these five minutes, the Demon Hunting Spider must obey Chen Feng’s command.
The frenzied Insect Mother focused its blood-red eyes on the Demon Hunting Spider. Overcome with the pain of losing its offspring, and its body wounded, the Mother of Corpse Beetles had already reached the edge of a rampage. At this moment, the appearance of the Demon Hunting Spider was like lighting a fuse on a powder keg. It panted heavily, its blood energy surging continuously within its body.
It sensed a threat from the Demon Hunting Spider.
A crescent moon hung crookedly in the sky, casting a chilling glow on the scene below.
The field was strewn with dismembered human remains, pale brains, bodies with intestines spilling out, and an entire leg severed. It was no longer a sacred ground for students to run, study, or even fall in love, but had turned into a bloody battlefield.
The Demon Hunting Spider noticed the oddity of the Mother of Corpse Beetles, hesitating slightly, as its instincts warned it that the insect before it was on the brink of a rampage.
Though lacking the ability to speak, the Demon Hunting Spider was not without intelligence. On the contrary, after advancing to silver rank, its brain capacity had been enhanced, making its intellect comparable to that of a seven or eight-year-old child.
A rampaging monster was terrifying.
Not just due to its power, but because once in a rampage, its intellect and consciousness would turn negative, becoming a puppet of pure anger unafraid of death or life. In the Abyss, aside from those naturally dim-witted (Inferior Demons, worms, and some Half-Beastmen), no one would provoke these lunatics.
The Demon Hunting Spider was no exception. If in the Abyss, it would have undoubtedly steered clear of the Mother of Corpse Beetles. But now was different; the contract’s power constrained its actions. No matter what, it had to faithfully serve Chen Feng for five minutes.
Resentment!
The Demon Hunting Spider cast a sinister look at Chen Feng, some complaints in its gaze, questioning why it was summoned at a time like this.
Chen Feng seemed to feel something, lifting his head to meet the Spider’s angry eyes, his face devoid of extra expression.
Take people’s food, short on their hands.
Having accepted his gifts, the Demon Hunting Spider was expected to pay a price.
Chen Feng took two steps back, seeking a safe place to watch the battle. Moving to the back of the crowd, he suddenly adopted a serious tone, "Demon Hunting Spider, kill it for me!"
