Chapter 12: Fact Remains

Delphinia bit her lower lip, her green eyes narrowing as she stared at Evander. The man leaned casually against the doorframe, his arms crossed, with a look that was hard to read but had a hint of amusement.

"You’re blackmailing me," she finally said, her voice shaking with frustration.

Evander’s lips curved into a smirk, the corner of his mouth lifting in a way that made her want to scream and stomp her feet like a child.

"I’m not blackmailing you," he said calmly, tilting his head as if reading her. "I’m simply asking for what I’m owed. Compensation."

Delphinia’s jaw dropped. "Compensation? For what? You’re acting like I begged you to spend a fortune on a stupid ring!" She pressed her palms against her temples, willing the situation to make sense, but it was futile.

Evander shrugged, acting so chill it was making her crazy. "And if I was blackmailing you, let’s not forget that you blackmailed me first."

She froze, her eyebrows knitting together in confusion. "What are you talking about?"

He lifted an eyebrow, not breaking eye contact. "You threatened me."

"What?" she blurted, her voice rising an octave. She placed a hand on her chest, as if offended by the mere suggestion. "I did not!"

"Yes, you did." He pushed off the doorframe and took a slow step toward her. "You stood on that balcony and said if I didn’t marry you, you’d jump."

Delphinia’s eyes widened in shock, her lips parting as though to speak, but no words came out. The mental image was so absurd, so extreme, that she couldn’t believe it had any connection to her. She wracked her brain for memories of the night before, but it was all a blur.

"You’re lying," she finally whispered, shaking her head in disbelief. "There’s no way I’d... do something like that." Her voice faltered at the end, as though even she doubted her own words.

Evander smirked again, looking annoyingly smug. "I’m lying, am I? You were crying your eyes out about your ex-husband, going on and on about how he gave you a fake diamond ring, and you demanded a real one to teach him a lesson."

Delphinia’s cheeks flamed as she covered her face with her hands, muffling a groan of humiliation. Her mind raced. No one knew about the fake ring—no one. Could Evander really be telling the truth?

"I—I couldn’t have," she mumbled behind her hands. "That doesn’t even sound like me."

"Oh, it does," Evander countered. "I’ll admit, I didn’t think anyone could be that bold—or drunk—but you proved me wrong."

Delphinia peeked at him between her fingers, glaring at the smug man who seemed to be enjoying her misery far too much. "If I really said those things, then why on earth would you actually go through with it?"

Evander gave her a pointed look, as though the answer should be obvious. "What was I supposed to do? Let you jump?" He paused, then added with a smirk, "If I’d known how much trouble you’d be, maybe I would have, but at the time, I wasn’t in the mood to answer questions from the police."

Her mouth fell open, and she gaped at him, utterly speechless. He wasn’t serious... was he? She ran her hands through her hair in frustration, tugging at the roots slightly as she muttered, "This is insane. You’re insane. This whole situation is insane."

"And yet, here we are," Evander said, gesturing vaguely around the room.

Delphinia huffed, crossing her arms over her chest. "You didn’t have to marry me, you know. You could’ve just... I don’t know... talked me down or something."

He raised an eyebrow, as though unimpressed with her logic. "And you think you would’ve listened? You were dead set on proving a point, and you weren’t going to take no for an answer."

She opened her mouth to argue but snapped it shut again, realizing she didn’t have a solid comeback. Her drunk self had definitely been a handful, and sober Delphinia was paying the price.

"Well, if you’re so high and mighty, why didn’t you just walk away?" she finally shot back, hoping to turn the tables on him.

Evander’s expression didn’t change, but there was a flicker of something in his eyes—irritation, perhaps? "You think I had a choice? A woman threatening to jump off a balcony isn’t exactly something you can ignore."

She let out a frustrated groan, throwing her hands in the air. "So you thought, ’Oh, I know what’ll solve this—marriage!’" She paced back and forth, muttering to herself. "Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable."

Evander watched her without saying a word. When she finally stopped pacing and looked at him again, he said, "You wanted the ring. I gave you the ring. Now you owe me for it."

Her eyes narrowed, and she jabbed a finger in his direction. "I don’t owe you anything. You’re the one who went along with this madness!"

"That’s beside the point," he replied, sounding calm but firm, "the fact remains: you’re wearing a ring that cost fifty million dollars, and I’m not letting you walk away without paying me back."

Delphinia stared at him, her jaw clenched, her mind racing for a solution. This man was impossible, unreasonable, and infuriating beyond belief.

"God," she muttered under her breath, glancing upward as though seeking divine intervention. "What have I gotten myself into?"

Evander smirked, clearly amused by her misery. "That’s a question only you can answer, Mrs. Walton."

"Don’t call me that!" she snapped, her cheeks flushing with a mix of embarrassment and anger. "This isn’t a real marriage. It’s a mistake—an enormous, life-changing mistake." Delphinia let out a strangled scream, her hands balling into fists at her sides. She wanted to hit something—or someone—but she forced herself to take a deep breath and regain her composure.

"Call it what you want," Evander said with a shrug. "The fact remains: you signed the papers, you took the ring, and now you’re my wife."
