Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 123: No Reason
Ashton sat cross-legged on his bed, the faint light from his desk lamp casting long shadows on the walls of his room. His small hands fiddled with the edge of his blanket, his thoughts running wild. His friend’s words from school kept echoing in his mind.
"You’ll get a sibling soon, and then your parents won’t care about you anymore."
His chest tightened as he imagined it. He pictured his father holding a tiny baby in his arms, his face beaming with pride. Delphinia stood beside him, her hands gently stroking the baby’s head. Around them, his grandparents showered the little one with love, their laughter echoing. Even Uncle Julian, who often teased Ashton, looked at the baby with adoration.
Ashton swallowed hard, his throat feeling dry. Would they all forget about me? he thought. His feet dangled off the edge of the bed, and he kicked the air absentmindedly, trying to push the unwelcome thoughts away.
Ashton sighed, flopping back onto the bed with a dramatic groan. His fingers tugged at the hem of his shirt as his mind whirled. This is all Liam’s fault, he thought, frowning at the ceiling. His friend had been going on and on about his soon-to-be sibling during lunch at school yesterday, painting vivid pictures of what it was like to have all the attention stolen away.
He never really worried about having a sibling before. It wasn’t something he’d seriously considered. It had always been just him and his dad for the longest time. When Delphinia entered their lives, things changed, but not in a bad way. She was kind, understanding, and never made him feel left out.
But now? The thought of not having his dad and Delphinia’s attention all to himself ate at him.
Ashton kicked at the air again, his frustration bubbling up. Why couldn’t he just stop thinking about it? It’s not like it’s even happening, he told himself.
But the seed of doubt was planted, and now it wouldn’t leave him alone. For the first time, the idea of having a sibling didn’t just seem foreign—it felt like a threat.
Looking around his room, Ashton saw his toys lined neatly on the shelves, the books Delphinia had helped him organize just the other day. The walls were covered in posters of his favorite superheroes, each one staring down at him with confidence. But even those bright, cheerful images couldn’t shake the dark cloud hovering over his mind.
He looked toward the door, his gaze lingering on the space that separated his room from the rest of the house. Slowly, Ashton stood, his bare feet padding softly against the plush carpet. His eyes wandered toward the hallway, landing on his father and Delphinia’s closed bedroom door.
Are they in there right now? Ashton wondered, biting his lower lip. Are they talking about having a baby? Do they already have one on the way?
The thought made his chest feel tight again. He clenched his fists at his sides, the corners of his mouth turning downward in a frown. Before he could stop himself, Ashton walked over to their door, his steps hesitant but determined. He raised his small hand and knocked softly.
A moment later, the door creaked open, and Delphinia appeared. She was dressed in a casual sweater and pajama pants, her hair loosely tied back. Her expression softened as she looked down at him.
"Ashton?" she asked gently, crouching to his level. "Is everything okay?"
Ashton shifted his weight from one foot to the other, avoiding her gaze. "Can I come in?" he murmured.
Delphinia smiled and opened the door wider, stepping aside. "Of course, come in."
Ashton walked in, his eyes scanning the room. Sitting on the bed, his dad was focused on his phone. He looked up, his brows furrowing slightly in concern.
"What’s going on, buddy?" Evander asked, setting his phone down beside him.
Ashton hesitated, his fingers nervously fidgeting with the hem of his t-shirt. "I... I don’t want to have dinner at home tonight," he said quickly.
Ashton stood in the middle of the room, feeling the weight of both Delphinia and Evander’s eyes on him. His heart raced, but he kept his face as neutral as possible. When he blurted out his excuse, he could feel a bead of sweat forming at the back of his neck.
Thank god he came up with that on the spot. In truth, he hadn’t planned anything before stepping through the door. He had just walked in.
Evander and Delphinia exchanged a surprised glance. Ashton noticed it, and his stomach churned. Were they already thinking about how difficult it would be to juggle him and a baby?
"Dinner outside?" Delphinia said after a moment, her voice light and thoughtful. "That’s a nice idea. It’s been a while since we went out, hasn’t it?"
Evander nodded, a small smile forming on his lips. "I think you’re right, Delphinia. A change of scenery would be nice." He looked at Ashton, his expression warm. "Do you have somewhere in mind, champ?"
Ashton blinked, his surprise evident. "You’re... okay with it?"
"Why wouldn’t we be?" Delphinia replied, sitting down on the bed beside Evander. She rested her hands on her lap, her posture relaxed. "It sounds like fun."
Ashton’s shoulders relaxed slightly, and he took a tentative step closer to them. "I don’t know where to go yet," he admitted, his voice a little steadier now. "Maybe somewhere with pizza?"
Evander chuckled, ruffling Ashton’s hair. "Pizza sounds perfect. How about that place you like downtown?"
Ashton nodded slowly, his lips curving into a small smile. "Yeah... that sounds good."
Delphinia leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees as she looked at him. "It’s settled, then. We’ll have a pizza night out. But first, you’ll have to help me decide what toppings to get. Deal?"
"Deal," Ashton said, his smile growing wider.
For a moment, he stood there, feeling a sense of relief wash over him. Maybe they’re not planning anything yet, he thought.
Maybe it’s just me overthinking.
