Chapter 14: Little Boy

Delphinia’s gaze darted between Evander and the little boy, Ashton, who was seated directly across from her. The soft sound of silverware tapping against plates echoed through the big dining room, but Evander’s cool, relaxed attitude seemed to hush everything else around her. He ate slowly and carefully. He didn’t even acknowledge for a second that he’d just dropped a huge bombshell on her.

Meanwhile, Delphinia sat tense in her chair, totally uninterested in the food, even though it was presented so well. Her fork hovered above the delicate slices of grilled fish, but instead of focusing on the meal, her mind buzzed like an alarm.

He has a child. A child!

How could he have just brushed off that little detail during their crazy wedding mess? Her fingers tightened around the fork as she shot him a sharp glare. As expected, Evander paid her no mind, his expression completely neutral as always.

Across the table, Ashton kicked his little legs back and forth, his shiny black shoes tapping the legs of his chair. He chewed his food slowly, his hazel eyes watching her with an intense, uncomfortable gaze. It wasn’t the look of a curious, shy child—more like he was examining her, as if she were being judged on some unseen list. Each time Delphinia met his gaze, Ashton’s lips curled into a mischievous little smirk, the kind that screamed trouble.

Delphinia tried to focus on the meal, but her thoughts were scattered. She’d marched into the dining room earlier, determined to hold her ground and prove she wouldn’t back down from this unconventional marriage. The fact that she was starving made her braver—she hadn’t eaten properly since yesterday. But now, faced with Evander’s calm demeanor and Ashton’s unnerving gaze, her confidence wavered.

The soft rustle of fabric brought her attention back to Ashton, who had stopped eating and turned his full focus to Evander. "Daddy," he said, his voice clear and sweet, yet carrying a strange weight. "Who is this woman?"

Evander paused while chewing, his knife still hanging over his plate. He raised his eyes to his son and then shifted them lazily to Delphinia, as if deciding how much of an answer he deserved. Finally, he set his utensils down with deliberate slowness and said, "She’s Delphinia. My new wife."

The words stayed in the air for a beat before he leaned over and gently patted Ashton’s head as he added, "Her name is Delphinia, and she’ll be living here with us from now on."

Delphinia blinked at the casual introduction, her awkward smile frozen in place. Really? That’s how he chooses to announce his new wife to his child? Over lunch, like we’re swapping the weather report? 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Ashton’s eyes flicked to Delphinia again, scanning her from head to toe. His small, round face betrayed no emotion except for the faint twitch of amusement in his lips. Finally, after a long pause, he tilted her head and said, "You’re funny."

Delphinia couldn’t decide if it was a compliment or an insult. The way Ashton’s lips twitched upwards hinted at the latter, and Delphinia’s cheeks flushed. Before she could think of a response, Evander’s voice cut in smoothly.

"He’s right," he said with a teasing tone, lifting his glass of water. "You’re funny, Delphinia."

Her jaw clenched as she fought to keep her composure. Oh, he thinks he’s so clever, doesn’t he? She straightened her back and forced a smile. "I know this must be a big surprise for you, and I’m sorry I didn’t get to tell you about this earlier. But—"

"I’m not surprised," Ashton interrupted. She picked up his fork and stabbed a piece of broccoli with surprising force. "I always knew Daddy was going to marry someone. Nana’s been saying he should for a long time."

Delphinia blinked, taken aback by the child’s bluntness. The way Ashton spoke, so calm and assured, was unsettling for a six-year-old. Delphinia risked a glance at Evander, who showed no reaction, as though his son’s words were the most natural thing in the world.

"Oh," Delphinia managed, her awkward smile returning. "I see..."

Ashton shrugged, taking another bite of her food before adding, "I didn’t think it would be someone like you, though."

Delphinia felt her stomach drop, and not from hunger. "Someone like me?" she echoed cautiously, unsure if she wanted to know what the boy meant.

Ashton didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he studied Delphinia with those sharp hazel eyes, then shrugged again. "You’re just... different." He didn’t elaborate, but the sneaky smile creeping across her face didn’t exactly ease Delphinia’s nerves.

"Well, Ashton," she said, softening her voice again, "I hope we can get to know each other better. I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of each other from now on."

Ashton didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he took another bite of her food. Evander’s voice interrupted her thoughts. "We’ll discuss house rules and routines after lunch," he said. "Ashton has his schedule, and I’m sure you’ll want to settle in."

Delphinia gave him a sharp look. "Actually," she said, forcing a calm tone, "I was hoping we could talk privately after lunch. There are... a few things I’d like to discuss."

Evander raised an eyebrow, his lips curling into a faint, knowing smile. "Of course."

Delphinia nodded, though she couldn’t shake the feeling that he already knew exactly what she wanted to say—and that he was enjoying her discomfort far more than he should.

The rest of the meal passed in relative silence. Delphinia couldn’t help but notice the curious, almost confused looks the staff gave her. Clearly, word of their sudden marriage hadn’t made it to everyone in the house yet. She sighed inwardly. Great. Add "announcing my existence to the entire household" to the growing list of things to deal with.

As the meal came to an end, Delphinia pushed her plate aside and folded her hands in her lap, waiting for Evander to finish. Ashton had already left the table, skipping off with a bounce in his step as though he hadn’t just dropped a series of verbal bombs on Delphinia. Evander, of course, remained as calm and collected as ever, taking his time with the last sips of his drink.

When he finally stood, he gestured for her to follow. "Shall we?"
