Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 15: Welcome to the Walton
Delphinia paced back and forth across the plush rug, her bare feet sinking slightly into its softness. The room around her was grand yet unfamiliar. But all of it felt like a cage to her, a luxurious prison she couldn’t escape. Her hands twisted together nervously, her teeth grazing her bottom lip as her thoughts raced.
"This is a mess. A disaster. An absolute train wreck!" Delphinia muttered under her breath, running a hand through her loose hair. Her steps quickened as she walked past the bed and back to the other side of the room. "We need to end this. Now. Today. The sooner, the better."
Evander sat on the couch, legs crossed casually, watching her with a half-smile, clearly entertained. He leaned back, resting one arm along the backrest, his fingers tapping a slow, rhythmic beat. There wasn’t the slightest hint of concern on his face, as if her outburst was merely a passing breeze.
Finally, Delphinia stopped mid-step and turned to face him, her hands on her hips. "Did you hear me? We have to end this marriage as soon as possible!" she declared, sounding determined but desperate.
Evander tilted his head slightly, the corners of his lips tugging upward in a faint smirk. "And here I thought you were determined to stick around. What changed, Mrs. Walton?" His tone was annoyingly calm, and there was a touch of sarcasm in his words.
Delphinia felt her frustration boil over. She threw her hands in the air. "What changed? Are you seriously asking me that? You didn’t think it was worth mentioning that you have a son? A son! What am I supposed to do now? Play house with you and pretend to be some kind of—of—stepmother?"
Evander raised an eyebrow, his smirk deepening. "And what exactly is wrong with that?"
"Everything! Everything is wrong with that!" Delphinia exclaimed. She resumed her pacing, her hands tugging at the sleeves of her blouse as if trying to wring the tension out of her body. "Ashton deserves a mother who truly cares for him, not someone... someone like me. Someone who’s only here because of this ridiculous situation."
Evander let out a low chuckle, leaning forward slightly. "Well, that’s easily solved. When are you going to pay me the fifty million dollars?"
Delphinia froze mid-step, her mouth falling open. She turned to glare at him, disbelief etched across her face. "You—are you kidding me right now? Fifty million dollars? You think I just have that lying around somewhere?"
He shrugged nonchalantly, crossing his arms over his chest. "You seemed very eager to end the marriage. I assumed you found the money somewhere."
"Evander Walton!" Delphinia groaned in frustration, her hands balling into fists at her sides. "Can’t you be serious for once? I don’t have fifty million dollars. I don’t have any money at all! I’m broke!" She threw herself into the armchair across from him, slumping dramatically. "I just want this to be over."
Evander leaned back again, his expression unreadable now. "Unfortunately, that’s not how this works, Mrs. Walton," he said flatly. "You agreed to the terms."
Delphinia’s frustration bubbled over. "What about your son?" she demanded, sitting up straighter. "Aren’t you even a little bit worried about him? Aren’t you concerned about leaving him with some stranger? What if I was... I don’t know, a criminal? What if I hurt him? Did you even think about that?"
At that, Evander’s chill attitude changed. His eyes darkened slightly as he sat forward, resting his elbows on his knees. He studied her in silence for a moment, the intensity of his gaze making her shift uncomfortably. Finally, he spoke, his voice low and serious. "Are you going to hurt Ashton?" he asked simply.
Delphinia blinked, caught off guard by the question. "That’s not the point," she said, avoiding his eyes. "You should think about the worst possibilities. Imagine what could happen—"
"I don’t need to imagine anything," Evander cut her off, his tone steady but firm. "Because I know everything about you, Delphinia."
Her head snapped up, her eyes narrowing in suspicion. "What’s that supposed to mean?"
Evander stood slowly, smoothing out the front of his shirt. He closed the distance between them, each movement careful. "It means," he began, "that I’ve already done my research. I know your position in the Harrington family. I know how they shipped you off to boarding school to keep you out of sight. I know about your marriage—how it ended just two days before we met."
Delphinia’s breath hitched. She stood up, automatically stepping back as he came closer. Her heart pounded in her chest. "You... how do you know all that?" she demanded, her voice barely above a whisper.
Evander didn’t answer. He closed the gap with two quick steps, standing tall over her. Delphinia tried to retreat further, but her back hit the edge of the desk. She swallowed hard as he leaned in, his lips brushing against her ear.
"I know you won’t hurt Ashton," he murmured, his voice sending a shiver down her spine. "But if you ever do... I won’t let you get away with it."
Delphinia’s entire body stiffened. She felt as though the air had been sucked out of the room. Who was this man? And what had she gotten herself into? Her mind raced with questions, but she couldn’t bring herself to speak.
Evander straightened, giving her a small, almost amused smile. "And just so you know," he said with a chuckle, "Ashton isn’t stupid. He’s a smart boy. He can tell who to trust. And besides," he added, gesturing toward the door, "the staff here are very loyal. If you ever try anything, I’ll know."
Delphinia bit her lip, her hands clenching into fists at her sides. She felt trapped, caged in yet another situation beyond her control. Was this really her life now? Living with eyes on her at all times, surrounded by strangers who would report her every move?
Evander seemed to notice the tension in her. He stepped closer again, and for the second time, he leaned in, his voice a low whisper. "Welcome to the Walton family, my wife."
