Chapter 149: Mother’s Assurance

As soon as Delphinia stepped through the grand entrance of the Walton estate, she froze in surprise. Sitting elegantly on the couch in the living room was none other than Elaine Walton, her mother-in-law. The older woman had an air of effortless grace, her legs crossed at the ankles, a delicate china teacup resting between her fingers. She looked completely at ease, as though she had been waiting for Delphinia for quite some time.

Delphinia’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly straightened her posture and walked forward, trying to suppress the sudden wave of nervousness washing over her.

"Mrs. Walton," she greeted, her voice polite yet uncertain. "I wasn’t expecting you."

Elaine’s eyes flicked up from her tea, amusement dancing in them. "Delphinia, dear, haven’t we already agreed to call each other by our first names?"

Realizing her mistake, Delphinia corrected herself immediately. "Right. Elaine," she said, forcing a small smile. "I’m sorry for not being here when you arrived."

She knew she had nothing to worry about—Elaine had been nothing but warm toward her since the beginning. And yet, there was still this quiet, nagging fear in the back of her mind.

If she had known Elaine was coming, she wouldn’t have left the house at all. Not that she was avoiding her, but she didn’t want to give the wrong impression. The last thing she wanted was for her mother-in-law to think she was neglecting her duties as Evander’s wife or being unwelcoming.

She knew it was irrational—Elaine wasn’t the type to judge so harshly. And still, the habit was there, ingrained too deeply to shake off so easily.

Maybe it was because Elaine carried herself with a quiet kind of authority, the kind that made people want to impress her. Or maybe it was because, despite how kind she was, Delphinia still felt like she had something to prove.

She glanced at Elaine, who was calmly sipping her tea, looking as though she had all the time in the world. It was silly to be so nervous around someone who had been her mother’s close friend. But old fears didn’t fade overnight.

Elaine waved a hand dismissively. "Nonsense. I didn’t inform you beforehand, so there’s no need to apologize." She set her teacup down on the saucer with a soft clink before patting the empty seat beside her. "Come, sit with me. I just wanted to spend more time with my daughter-in-law."

Delphinia hesitated only for a moment before walking over and lowering herself onto the couch. The scent of freshly brewed tea and soft lavender perfume filled the space between them. Despite her initial unease, she found herself appreciating Elaine’s presence. There was a quiet warmth in the way she spoke, something that put Delphinia at ease.

Elaine poured another cup of tea and handed it to her. "Tell me, have you been eating well?"

Delphinia accepted the cup with both hands, nodding. "I have. The chef here is wonderful. Everything he prepares is delicious."

Elaine chuckled. "I remember when Evander was younger, he used to be the pickiest eater. He would throw tantrums if his food wasn’t prepared exactly the way he liked."

Delphinia raised a brow in amusement. "I can’t imagine that. He always seems so composed."

Elaine smirked knowingly. "Oh, he wasn’t always that way. But I suppose people change as they grow older."

They continued talking, the conversation light and easy. They spoke of trivial things—favorite foods, the beauty of the Walton estate, and even a few lighthearted stories about Evander’s childhood. For a moment, Delphinia felt as though she was speaking with a close relative rather than her powerful mother-in-law.

But then, the atmosphere shifted subtly as Elaine set her teacup down with a soft clink and regarded Delphinia with a thoughtful expression.

"So," Elaine said, her voice smooth yet pointed. "What do you think of her?"

Delphinia blinked. "Her?"

Elaine tilted her head. "Lydia Morgan. You’ve met her, haven’t you?"

Delphinia inhaled sharply. Word traveled fast, indeed. She wasn’t entirely surprised that Elaine already knew about her encounter with Lydia, but it still caught her off guard.

"Yes, I have," Delphinia answered carefully, her fingers tightening slightly around her cup. "It was brief."

Elaine hummed. "And? What do you think of her?"

Delphinia hesitated. "I don’t know her well enough to form an opinion."

Elaine leaned back, studying her. "Truth be told, I’ve never particularly liked Lydia. But if she wants to make things right with Ashton, I suppose I have no choice but to tolerate her." 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

Delphinia nodded slowly, unsure of what to say. Lydia Morgan had been an unexpected element in her life, and she still wasn’t entirely sure where she stood. The idea of Lydia trying to reconnect with Ashton left her feeling uneasy, though she wasn’t sure if it was out of concern for Ashton or something else entirely.

Elaine sighed, her gaze softening. "Delphinia, I can see the doubt in your eyes."

Delphinia lowered her gaze. "I just... I don’t know if I can be a great mother to Ashton. I wasn’t expecting to step into this role, and I’m afraid I won’t be enough for him."

Elaine reached out and placed a gentle hand over hers. "Being a mother isn’t about perfection, my dear. It’s about showing up. Ashton already adores you. Can’t you see it?"

Delphinia swallowed the lump in her throat. "But what if I make mistakes?"

Elaine gave her a reassuring squeeze. "You will. Every mother does. But what matters is that you love him. That’s more than enough."

Delphinia looked up, meeting Elaine’s kind yet firm gaze. A warmth spread through her chest, a reassurance she hadn’t realized she needed.

"And as for Evander," Elaine continued, her lips curling into a knowing smile. "You’ll be a great wife to him, too."

Delphinia felt her cheeks warm at the implication, but before she could respond, Elaine gave her hand one final pat before rising gracefully to her feet.

"I should be going now," Elaine said. "But, Delphinia, don’t ever doubt yourself. You’re exactly where you’re meant to be."

Delphinia sat in quiet contemplation as she watched Elaine leave, her heart feeling just a little lighter than before.
