Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 17: A Confession
Delphinia leaned back in the black car’s backseat, the engine’s low hum making her feel a little sleepy. The leather seat under her felt cool and smooth, totally different from the warmth on her cheeks. She looked out the tinted windows, watching the busy city pass by in a blur of lights and tall buildings. Her heart was thumping, a mix of nerves and disbelief stirring inside.
She nervously played with her fingers, glancing toward the driver now and then. He was polite, his hands steady on the wheel. She let out a soft cough. "Um... I promise I won’t take long," she said awkwardly, her voice small.
The driver, a man in his mid-forties with kind eyes and a faint smile, glanced at her through the rearview mirror and nodded. "Take your time, Mrs. Walton," he replied smoothly.
Mrs. Walton. That name again.
It hung in the air, strange and foreign, yet undeniably hers. She shivered slightly and looked away, staring down at her lap. Her fingers clenched and unclenched as her thoughts spiraled.
Once the car rolled to a stop outside Valerie’s apartment complex, Delphinia exhaled shakily and stepped out. The evening air felt nice against her skin, pulling her back to reality. She adjusted her jacket and turned back to the driver.
"Please wait here. I’ll be quick, I promise," she said.
He simply nodded, his smile unwavering. "Of course."
Delphinia hurried into the building, her heels clicking against the polished floor as she headed straight for the elevator. The ride up felt like it was taking forever, yet too fast at the same time, her stomach flipping with each "ding" as the floors passed. When the elevator doors slid open, she stepped into the hallway, already bracing herself for Valerie’s reaction.
She rang the doorbell, and it opened right away, revealing Valerie with a frazzled look on her face. Her eyes widened the moment she saw Delphinia, relief flooding her features.
"Delphinia!" Valerie cried, pulling her into a tight hug. "Oh, thank God! Where have you been? I’ve been worried sick!"
Delphinia stood frozen for a moment, then patted Valerie’s back awkwardly. "Uh... I’m fine, really. It’s a long story."
Valerie pulled back, gripping Delphinia’s shoulders as she scanned her up and down. "A long story? You disappeared! I woke up and you were just gone. Do you know how freaked out I was? I thought something terrible had happened!" Her voice cracked slightly, her worry evident.
Delphinia blinked, taken aback by how intense her friend was. She stepped past Valerie and sank onto the couch, kicking off her heels and burying her face in her hands. "I... I don’t even know where to start," she mumbled.
Valerie shut the door and followed her, crossing her arms as she stood over her. "Try the beginning, maybe? Because last night, we were at the club, and I was having fun, and then this morning, I wake up to find you gone without a trace. I tried calling you, but guess what? Your phone is with me!" She threw her hands up in frustration.
Delphinia peeked through her fingers, groaning. "You have my phone?"
"Yes!" Valerie huffed, dropping onto the couch beside her. "And I had no idea how to find you! What were you thinking?"
Delphinia groaned again and leaned back, staring at the ceiling. "Look, do you remember anything from last night?"
Valerie frowned, her brow furrowing in concentration. "Um... sort of? I remember us dancing... or maybe I was dancing with someone else? I’m not sure. Things got kind of blurry after that. Why? What happened?"
Delphinia sighed deeply, her gaze darting toward her friend. "Let’s just say I got myself into some serious trouble."
Valerie’s eyes widened. "Trouble? What kind of trouble? Did you... did you spend the night with a stranger?" Her voice dropped to a scandalized whisper as she leaned closer.
"What? No!" Delphinia exclaimed, shaking her head furiously. "I didn’t sleep with anyone!"
Valerie visibly relaxed, letting out a relieved breath. "Good. Because nothing can be worse than sleeping with a stranger." She stood and wandered toward the kitchen. "Do you want something to drink? Coffee? Tea?"
"Water’s fine," Delphinia muttered, watching Valerie move around the small kitchen.
Within moments, Valerie returned with two glasses of water. She handed one to Delphinia and sat down, taking a sip of her own. "Okay, so you didn’t sleep with anyone. Then what’s the big deal?"
Delphinia hesitated, her fingers tightening around the glass. "I didn’t sleep with anyone, but... I kind of... married someone."
Valerie choked, sputtering as water sprayed from her mouth. She bent over, coughing violently.
"Oh my God, are you okay?" Delphinia asked, patting Valerie’s back in alarm.
Valerie straightened, her eyes wide with disbelief. "What did you just say?"
Delphinia bit her lip. "I said... I got married."
"Married?! As in married-married?" Valerie shrieked. She placed her glass down hastily, gripping Delphinia’s arm. "Please tell me you’re joking."
"I wish I was," Delphinia muttered, slumping against the couch.
Valerie gawked at her, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "How? When? To who?"
"It’s... it’s a long story," Delphinia began, diving into the wild story of the night. She spared no detail, from the hazy moments at the club to waking up with a diamond ring on her finger, to Evander’s smug face and his outrageous fifty-million-dollar demand.
By the time she finished, Valerie was staring at her with a look of pure astonishment. Her jaw hung open, and Delphinia half-wondered if it might lock in that position.
Valerie blinked several times, still processing the words Delphinia had just thrown at her. Her mouth worked, but no sound came out at first. She finally stammered, her voice trembling, "W-who... w-who did you say?"
Delphinia sighed, rubbing her temples. "Evander Walton," she muttered, too exhausted to care about the shock still lingering in Valerie’s eyes.
The moment she mentioned the name, Valerie’s face paled. Her hand trembled slightly, clutching her glass with a death grip as her lips parted in disbelief. She stared at Delphinia like she’d just dropped a bomb.
"Evander Walton?" Valerie echoed, her voice barely a whisper. "As in the Evander Walton? The billionaire... the..."
Delphinia raised an eyebrow, puzzled by her friend’s reaction. "Yeah, that’s the one.
"So let me get this straight," Valerie said slowly, her voice thick with surprise. "You’re telling me that you, Delphinia Harrington, just married Evander Walton? The Evander Walton? The billionaire? The most eligible guy on the planet? My high school crush?!"
Delphinia blinked, her head snapping toward Valerie. "Wait, what? Your high school crush?"
No way, this has to be a joke...
