Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 173: The Gamble of Trust
Delphinia hadn’t expected that.
Of all the things Lyvia could have said, all the excuses or justifications she could have offered, that wasn’t one of them.
Delphinia’s fingers curled slightly against her lap. So apart from coming here to ask for forgiveness, Lyvia had also come to warn her?
She studied Lyvia carefully, taking in the way her shoulders were drawn tight, the way her hands fidgeted against the fabric of her skirt. There was tension in her, but not the usual kind—the nervous, self-conscious kind that came with guilt. No, this was different. It felt heavier, more urgent.
Delphinia’s mind whirled with possibilities. Had something happened? Was Helena planning something again?
Of course she was. That woman never stopped scheming.
Still, it was strange. Lyvia had spent years turning a blind eye, choosing to stay quiet, choosing to let things happen even when she knew they were wrong. Yet here she was, sitting across from Delphinia, not just apologizing, but warning her.
Why?
Was it because she finally realized the extent of Helena’s cruelty? Or was it because things had gotten so bad that even she couldn’t ignore it anymore?
Delphinia didn’t know if she could trust Lyvia’s sudden concern. But at the same time, a small part of her—one she hated acknowledging—wanted to.
Because Lyvia had always been the only one in that house who wasn’t unbearable. The only one who sometimes looked at her like a person instead of an inconvenience.
Even now, there was something in Lyvia’s eyes. A hesitance, a quiet fear. Whatever she had seen, whatever had pushed her to come here, it was serious enough for her to break the silence she had always kept.
Delphinia leaned back slightly, exhaling through her nose. She wasn’t sure what to say. She wasn’t even sure what to think.
Lyvia’s hands trembled as she placed them on her lap as she repeated again. "My mother. You need to be careful of her."
A flicker of curiosity passed through Delphinia’s eyes before it was quickly masked. "What do you mean by that?"
Lyvia swallowed hard before speaking again, her voice quiet but firm. "She’s really insistent on me becoming the heir to the Harrington family."
Delphinia let out a small chuckle, shaking her head. "That’s nothing new."
Of course Helena was obsessed with making Lyvia the heir. She had been pushing for it for years, even back when Delphinia was still part of the family. But now that Delphinia was out of the picture, it would be even easier for Helena to mold Lyvia into her perfect successor.
Delphinia’s gaze flickered back to Lyvia, watching the way she fidgeted. "Isn’t that what you’ve always wanted?"
Lyvia shook her head quickly, her brows knitting together. "No. It’s her dream, not mine."
Delphinia arched a brow. "Then why haven’t you told her that?" 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
"I have," Lyvia said with a frustrated sigh. "But she won’t listen. She keeps forcing me to study business and management, drilling it into me like it’s the only thing that matters." She hesitated before adding, "And I don’t think she’ll stop at just that."
Delphinia squinted slightly. "What do you mean?"
Lyvia shifted uncomfortably. "She wants me to be the only heir. The sole heir." Her voice dropped lower. "I think she’ll do anything to make sure of that."
Delphinia scoffed. "Of course she would. Your mother never half-asses anything, especially when it comes to controlling people."
Lyvia looked up at her, her expression filled with hesitation. "I’m scared she’ll do something extreme to you."
Delphinia tilted her head, her lips twitching into a humorless smirk. "Why am I not surprised?"
Lyvia’s throat bobbed as she swallowed. "I—I know it sounds crazy, but she’s been acting strange lately. I even caught her talking about you with someone."
Delphinia’s posture stiffened slightly, her dark eyes sharpening. "Who?"
Lyvia shook her head. "I don’t know. It was a phone call."
Delphinia slumped back into her chair, deep in thought. Could it be the same person she had seen Helena meeting at the restaurant the other day? The thought unsettled her, but she didn’t let it show.
"What did she say?" Delphinia asked, her voice quieter now.
Lyvia hesitated for a moment before finally speaking. "She said you don’t deserve to be the Harrington heir. That it’s good I’m the one with the biggest chance now. But..." she trailed off, her hands twisting together.
"But what?" Delphinia prompted, leaning in slightly.
Lyvia took a breath, her voice barely above a whisper. "She said she needs to make sure you never get in the way again."
Silence stretched between them.
Delphinia’s expression darkened, her jaw clenching. That definitely sounded like something Helena would say. The woman never tolerated loose ends. And if she truly saw Delphinia as a threat, then there was no telling what lengths she’d go to in order to eliminate that threat.
Helena might really choose to do something extreme to her.
Delphinia exhaled slowly, a cold glint settling into her eyes. "Is that so?"
Lyvia nodded, looking more anxious than ever. "I don’t want anything bad to happen to you, Delphinia."
Delphinia looked at Lyvia for a moment before a small smile formed on her lips. "Thank you for warning me," she said, her voice softer now. "I really appreciate it."
Taking a deep breath, Delphinia stood up and moved forward, settling herself beside Lyvia instead of across from her. Lyvia looked at her in surprise, but Delphinia simply placed a hand on her shoulder.
"I won’t lie—I’m worried about what Helena might do," Delphinia admitted. "And I need to know if you’re willing to help me."
Lyvia’s brows furrowed, her expression serious. "Anything I can do," she said without hesitation.
Delphinia smiled again, this time with a sharper edge. "Then keep an eye on her for me," she said. "If you notice anything suspicious, anything at all, tell me immediately."
She watched Lyvia closely as she said this, gauging her reaction.
Though Helena was far from a good person, Lyvia—her daughter—was different. Delphinia had never truly trusted anyone under Helena’s roof, but Lyvia wasn’t like her mother. They were never particularly close, but Delphinia knew Lyvia had a heart.
Even so, this was a gamble.
There was always the tiny possibility that Lyvia was still tied to her mother, that this was all some twisted game Helena had planned. But if there was even a chance Lyvia was being honest, Delphinia needed to take it.
Lyvia exhaled, her expression firm. "Sure. I don’t want her to do anything worse, and I don’t want anything bad to happen to you."
Delphinia nodded. That was enough—for now.
She surprised Lyvia by pulling her into a brief hug. Lyvia stiffened for a second before slowly relaxing.
Now, she just needed to win this gamble.
