Chapter 174: The Power Play

Evander sat in his spacious office, the soft afternoon light filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The rich aroma of grilled meat and seasoned vegetables lingered in the air as he sliced through a perfectly cooked sausage, bringing it to his mouth with measured elegance. Across from him sat Hugo, who was halfway through his own meal.

Hugo let out a weary sigh, pushing his plate slightly forward. "Kai Robinson is relentless. He’s been calling non-stop, practically throwing promises of rewards and gifts just to get a meeting with you."

Evander chuckled, his deep voice echoing in the quiet room. He chewed his bite thoughtfully before swallowing. "Let him beg. Ignore him. He thinks being a Robinson gives him the right to anything he wants. But even the Robinsons can’t measure up to the Waltons."

Hugo smirked. "You’re right, but I swear, if I have to take another one of his calls, I might lose it."

Evander leaned back in his chair, his expression calm but his eyes gleaming with amusement. "Don’t. It’d be unprofessional. Besides, watching him squirm is mildly entertaining."

The two shared a short laugh before finishing their meal, the conversation drifting to less frustrating topics. The day passed in a blur of meetings and paperwork until the soft glow of the evening sun signaled the end of office hours.

Evander gathered his things, slipping on his tailored jacket before making his way to the underground parking lot. His polished shoes echoed against the concrete. He was already planning the evening in his mind—dinner with Delphinia and Ashton, maybe some quiet time at home. The thought brought an unusual warmth to his chest.

As he reached for the handle of his car, a sharp voice cut through the silence.

"Evander Walton!"

The name echoed in the cavernous lot. Evander’s hand froze before he slowly turned, his face a mask of calm curiosity.

Evander’s fingers hovered over the car handle, his grip tightening slightly. His name—his full name—rang through the empty parking lot. Not many people dared to call him like that.

Who had the audacity?

His mind ticked through the possibilities, but the list was short. Most people either feared him too much or respected him enough to use his proper title. Even those who disliked him knew better than to spit his name like a challenge.

He turned slowly, his expression carefully neutral, masking the flicker of irritation beneath. His sharp eyes swept across the dimly lit lot, searching for the source of the voice.

Striding toward him was a tall man in an expensive suit, his stride confident but edged with nervous energy.

Evander recognized him instantly—Kai Robinson. His jaw clenched briefly, but he smoothed his expression into one of mild confusion.

Kai Robinson came to a stop a few feet away, adjusting the cuffs of his pristine suit. He gave Evander a polite, almost knowing smile. "Mr. Walton," he greeted smoothly. "What a shame our first meeting had to happen in a parking lot of all places."

Evander let a flicker of fake confusion pass over his face before tilting his head slightly. "I’m sorry," he said, his tone light but just distant enough to be dismissive. "Do I know you?" 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

For a second, Kai’s confident expression faltered. It was subtle—the brief widening of his eyes, the twitch in his fingers before he caught himself.

Kai hesitated for a beat, clearly thrown off. "Ah, I’m sorry—where are my manners? I’m Kai Robinson."

Evander schooled his expression, but internally, he smirked.

So that’s what kind of man Kai was. The kind who assumed his reputation preceded him, the kind who expected people to recognize his name on sight. Evander had dealt with plenty of men like him before—wealthy, ambitious, and just arrogant enough to believe they were untouchable.

Kai probably thought himself important enough that someone like Evander should already know him. The momentary crack in his mask when Evander feigned ignorance only confirmed it.

How amusing.

Evander shifted his weight slightly, letting a slow, polite smile stretch across his lips. "Kai Robinson," he repeated as if testing the name on his tongue. "Should I be impressed?"

Kai chuckled, though there was a trace of tension in it. "I’d like to think so."

Evander pretended to think for a moment before offering a polite smile. "Gregory Robinson’s son?"

Kai’s chest puffed slightly with pride. "Exactly."

Inside, Evander’s blood boiled. He knew exactly who Kai was—Delphinia’s ex-husband, the man who had made her life miserable. The urge to land a punch right on his smug face was strong, but Evander swallowed it down. Patience. Strategy. He wanted to see what Kai wanted first.

"What brings you here, Mr. Robinson?"

Kai’s smile faltered for a moment before he straightened. "I was hoping we could speak in private. It’s... serious."

Evander raised an eyebrow, feigning mild surprise. "Serious enough for you to come all this way?"

Kai nodded. "Yes. I thought it warranted a face-to-face conversation."

Evander glanced at his watch, though he already knew his answer. "I’m afraid I can’t right now. I need to get home to my wife."

Kai’s brows lifted slightly, a flash of surprise crossing his face. "Your wife? I didn’t realize—"

"Yes," Evander cut in smoothly, letting the word hang in the air. "She’s waiting for me."

There was a flicker of something in Kai’s eyes—curiosity, perhaps a trace of envy—but he covered it quickly. "I understand. How about lunch tomorrow? Scheur’s?"

Evander pretended to consider it, tapping his fingers against the roof of his car. "Fine. Noon."

Kai smiled, though it didn’t reach his eyes. "Perfect. I won’t keep you any longer, then. Wouldn’t want to be an obstacle between you and your lovely wife. She’s a lucky woman."

Evander’s lips curved into a slow, deliberate smirk. "No, it’s the other way around, actually."

Kai’s smile stiffened before he turned, walking away with a forced ease. Evander slid into his car, the soft leather creaking beneath him. Through the windshield, he watched Kai disappear into the shadows of the lot.

He started the engine, the hum vibrating through the car, but before pulling out, he let out a dark chuckle. "What a fool bastard."
