Chapter 186: Whispers of Worry

Evander’s grip tightened around the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white as the car raced through the busy streets. The engine roared, matching the storm brewing inside him. His mind was a whirlwind, replaying the moment Hugo had barged into his office without so much as a knock. He’d been seconds away from reprimanding him for the lack of decorum—until Hugo dropped the bomb.

"Delphinia fainted... She’s at the hospital."

The pen Evander had been holding had slipped from his fingers, clattering against the polished surface of his desk. His heart had stopped. The next second, he was already out of his chair, barking orders to find out which hospital, barely listening as Hugo provided the address. Nothing else mattered but getting to her.

"Hold on, Delphinia," he muttered under his breath, his jaw clenched as he pressed harder on the gas. The buildings blurred past his window, but all he could see was her face— the warmth in her smile, the light in her eyes, the way she always tried to appear strong even when she was breaking inside.

Damn it.

By the time he pulled into the hospital parking lot, his heart was thundering in his chest. He barely registered shutting off the engine before he was striding through the glass doors, his long legs carrying him straight to the front desk.

"Delphinia Walton," he said, his voice sharp and urgent. "Which room?"

The nurse behind the counter blinked at the intensity in his gaze before quickly looking through the screen.

"Room 312, third floor."

Without another word, Evander spun on his heel and headed for the elevator, his heart pounding louder with every passing second. The doors opened, and he slammed the button, impatient as the floors ticked by. His mind raced—what had happened? She’d been fine this morning. A little tired, perhaps, but nothing unusual. How could everything have changed in just a few hours?

Finally, the elevator doors opened with a ding. Evander’s long strides echoed down the sterile hallway as he made his way to her room. His fingers wrapped around the cold metal handle, and with a harsh push, the door swung open.

"Delphinia!"

Delphinia’s head snapped toward him from the bed, her eyes wide in surprise. She was sitting up against the pillows, her face pale but still beautiful. A doctor stood beside her, flipping through a clipboard. The moment Evander saw her, relief crashed into him—but it was quickly swallowed by anger at seeing her in this place.

Without thinking, he crossed the room in long, hurried strides, wrapping his arms around her small frame and burying his face in her hair.

"Damn it, Delphinia," he muttered, his voice muffled against her shoulder. "You scared the hell out of me."

Her hands slowly rose, patting his back in soothing circles.

"Evander... I’m okay."

He pulled back just enough to look at her, his dark eyes scanning every inch of her face, searching for any sign of pain. His thumb brushed over her cheek as if to reassure himself she was really there.

"What happened? Why did you faint?" he demanded, his voice still rough.

Before Delphinia could answer, the doctor cleared his throat.

"If I may," he interjected politely. "This lady is experiencing fatigue and mild stress. Nothing serious, but her body is simply exhausted. With proper rest, hydration, and vitamins, she will recover fully."

Evander’s sharp gaze flicked to the doctor, narrowing as if trying to gauge whether he was downplaying the situation. Only when he saw the sincerity in the doctor’s expression did he let out a slow breath.

"Thank you, doctor."

The doctor nodded, then quietly excused himself, leaving the two of them alone.

The moment the door clicked shut, Evander turned back to Delphinia, his brow still furrowed. He sat on the edge of the bed, his large hand covering hers.

"Is this because of the party?" he asked, his voice low. "If it’s too much, we’re canceling it. I don’t care how far along the preparations are."

Delphinia’s lips twitched into a faint smile, her fingers curling around his hand.

"Don’t be silly, Evander. It’s almost done... If we cancel it now, I might actually faint again."

He glared at her, clearly not amused by the joke.

"This isn’t funny," he snapped. "If you’re stressing yourself out for some ridiculous party, then it’s not worth it."

Delphinia’s smile softened, and she squeezed his hand gently.

"It’s not ridiculous... It’s important, okay."

"You’re more important to me."

The words came out so easily, so naturally, that they caught both of them by surprise. For a moment, there was only silence—a fragile, tender quiet that wrapped around them like a cocoon.

Delphinia’s heart skipped a beat, her eyes misting slightly. Slowly, she leaned forward, resting her forehead against his. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

"You really are hopelessly protective, aren’t you?" she whispered, a teasing smile on her lips.

Evander closed his eyes, letting out a shaky breath.

"Of course I am... You’re my wife."

Delphinia’s heart swelled at those words. Her arms circled his neck, pulling him closer until their noses brushed.

"I’m happy," she murmured.

Evander opened his eyes, studying her with quiet intensity.

"Why?"

Delphinia’s smile grew warmer, her fingers running through the hair at the nape of his neck.

"Because you’re here... worrying about me... caring about me."

Evander’s heart twisted painfully in his chest. He had no idea how she could be so gentle, so loving, after everything she’d been through—after everything people like him had put her through.

"You deserve someone who worries about you," he whispered hoarsely.

Delphinia leaned in, brushing her lips against his.

"I already have him."

Evander kissed her back softly, his fingers threading through her hair as if he never wanted to let her go. The kiss was slow and tender—a silent promise that he would always be there, always protect her.

When they finally broke apart, Evander rested his forehead against hers once more.

"No more overexerting yourself," he murmured. "No more fainting. Promise me."

Delphinia smiled, her eyes shining.

"Okay... I promise."

Evander’s lips curved slightly.

"Good... Because if you break that promise, I’ll lock you in our bedroom for the rest of your life."

Delphinia chuckled softly, her laughter warm and sweet.

"That doesn’t sound too bad... As long as you’re there with me."

Evander’s heart thudded in his chest. He pressed a lingering kiss to her forehead, holding her close—silently vowing that as long as he was by her side, nothing would ever hurt her again.
