Chapter 197: Bare Minimum

The gentle afternoon sunlight streamed through the tall windows in the luxurious suite. Delphinia stood by the vanity, carefully fastening a pair of pearl earrings when a sudden knock on the door made her pause.

Before she could answer, the door creaked open, and to her utter shock, a whole line of people began filing into the room. Makeup artists, hairstylists, dressers—each one carrying bags, cases, and rolling carts filled with beauty tools and designer gowns.

"What is..." Delphinia blinked, taking a step back. "What’s happening?"

From behind the small army, Elaine appeared with a bright smile, arms folded smugly across her chest. "I called them."

Delphinia’s mouth fell open. "You called... all of them?"

"Of course." Elaine’s eyes sparkled mischievously. "You’re the lady of the house now. Did you think you’d get away with doing your hair and makeup alone for Evander’s birthday party?"

"I—" Delphinia glanced at the growing team, who had already begun setting up their tools on the vanity table and arranging garment bags on the bed. "This is too much..."

"Too much?" Elaine arched a brow. "Honey, this is the bare minimum."

Delphinia opened her mouth to protest, but before she could speak, another voice chimed in from the doorway.

"This is literally the minimum you should get as Mrs. Walton."

Her heart skipped at the deep timbre of the voice. Turning her head, she found Evander leaning casually against the doorframe, his sharp eyes fixed on her. There was a soft smirk on his lips, but something warmer flickered beneath the teasing surface.

Delphinia’s cheeks warmed slightly. "But you’re the one who needs to be dolled up tonight... you’re the star of the party."

Evander’s smirk deepened, his gaze unwavering. "You’re my wife, Delphinia. That makes you the star too. I don’t want to shine alone."

A chorus of soft squeals broke out from the makeup artists and stylists in the room. One of them even gasped, covering her mouth in disbelief.

Delphinia’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart gave a small, embarrassing flutter. She quickly looked away, pretending to adjust the silk robe draped around her shoulders.

"You..." she cleared her throat, trying to fight the smile threatening to bloom on her lips. "You really know how to embarrass me in front of everyone." 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"I’m just telling the truth," Evander replied simply, his eyes never leaving her.

Her cheeks flushed deeper. The room buzzed with whispered excitement, the staff exchanging amused glances as they hurriedly began their work. One by one, they gathered around Delphinia, guiding her to sit down at the vanity.

As the makeup artist began brushing a soft foundation across her cheeks, Delphinia allowed herself to relax into the chair. Despite her initial protest, a small part of her couldn’t deny that she wanted to look her best tonight—not just for the guests or the Walton name, but for Evander.

The soft strokes of the brush glided over her skin, blending warm tones into a flawless glow. Her eyelids were dusted with shimmering taupe, giving her eyes a subtle sparkle like stardust. The makeup artist lined her lashes carefully, making them long and full, before painting her lips in a deep, velvety red.

Delphinia caught her reflection in the mirror, blinking in quiet surprise. The woman staring back at her looked elegant, sophisticated... beautiful.

Her heart stirred.

Next, the hairstylist swept her dark hair into soft curls. Half of it was pinned back with delicate silver pins, leaving the rest to fall down her back in silky waves. Tiny jewels were woven into her locks, catching the light with every movement.

"This is really... too much," Delphinia murmured under her breath, almost to herself.

Evander’s voice drifted from across the room. "It’s not enough."

Her heart gave another small flutter.

When the final touches were done, the dresser approached with the gown. Delphinia’s eyes widened the moment she saw it—a deep, midnight blue dress that shimmered like the night sky. The fabric was soft satin, flowing gracefully down to her ankles with delicate embroidery scattered like tiny stars along the hem. The neckline draped off her shoulders, revealing her slender collarbones and the smooth curve of her neck.

She stepped into the dress carefully, feeling the cool fabric glide over her skin. As the zipper closed along her back, Delphinia turned to the mirror. Her breath caught in her throat.

For a moment, she could hardly recognize herself.

A soft rustle behind her made her glance back. Evander stood by the doorway, now dressed in a tailored dark blue tuxedo that matched her gown perfectly. The deep color made his sharp features stand out even more, his broad shoulders filling out the fine fabric effortlessly. He was adjusting his cufflinks, but his eyes were locked on her reflection.

"You look..." He trailed off, his gaze lingering. "Breathtaking."

Delphinia’s heart thudded against her ribcage. She lowered her gaze quickly, pretending to smooth the skirt of her dress.

"You clean up well yourself," she replied, trying to keep her voice steady.

A small chuckle rumbled in Evander’s chest. "I had to. Can’t have my wife outshining me completely."

Ashton appeared a few minutes later, dressed in a smaller tuxedo of the same deep blue shade. His hair was neatly combed, and a proud smile stretched across his face.

"You both look like royalty," Elaine beamed, snapping a few photos on her phone.

Before long, the three of them stood together in front of the mirror—Evander, Delphinia, and Ashton—wrapped in matching hues of the night sky. The staff took a few more photos, capturing the rare moment where the Walton family looked not just powerful, but whole.

Delphinia’s fingers curled lightly around the hem of her dress as she glanced at her own reflection. Her heart swelled, but a small knot of nerves twisted deep in her chest.

I hope everything goes well tonight...

It was Evander’s night—his celebration—but somehow, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something bigger was waiting on the horizon.

Something that could change everything.
