Chapter 366: Chapter 8: Tender Trap (Part 8)

Jiang Yan walked up to An Jiayi, the distance between them so close that An Jiayi could even see the tears in Jiang Yan’s eyes. Jiang Yan said, "Do you want me to take you to see it?"

Out of rationality, An Jiayi knew that she should refuse Jiang Yan.

However, she faintly felt that what Jiang Yan wanted to show her might also be something she wanted to know.

She remained silent, letting Jiang Yan pull her towards the underground garage.

Their destination was the rooftop of the Xiangjiang Hotel. As they stepped out of the elevator, there was a security guard blocking the entrance.

Jiang Yan raised her hand, pointing in Xie Zhang’s direction.

Following Jiang Yan’s gesture, An Jiayi looked over and saw Xie Zhang, along with a man of gentle and refined appearance, and a woman sitting with them, her eyes brimming with laughter. She tilted her face, listening relaxedly as the two men chatted.

At one point, Xie Zhang said something, and the woman playfully slapped his hand.

There was no sign of anger on Xie Zhang; he was grinning and talking with the woman.

"That’s Bian Yue, the sole daughter of the Bian Family. Just the inheritance she holds, we wouldn’t be able to earn in ten lifetimes," Jiang Yan’s voice reached An Jiayi’s ears like a curse, "See clearly? Only such women can sit at the same table and dine with them as equals. We are merely playthings!"

An Jiayi had always known this.

But knowing and seeing with one’s own eyes were entirely different things.

An Jiayi felt a coldness emanating from her bones, as if it were seeping into her limbs and body, leaving her no way out.

Her face was pale and desolate. After a long while, she closed her eyes tightly, turned around, and walked towards the elevator.

However, the scene she just witnessed continued to linger in her mind.

Jiang Yan and An Jiayi watched the numbers on the elevator fluctuate rhythmically.

"This is our life. See these numbers? No matter how high, we can’t escape the fate of falling. You, me, we’re all the same," Jiang Yan sneered, staring at An Jiayi, satisfied to see the fracture in her eyes. "You don’t need me to teach you that what rises must fall, do you?"

An Jiayi fell seriously ill.

After she returned to Bai Garden, she started having a fever.

When Xie Zhang returned, he found her lying on the bed, listless.

He frowned, and after the family doctor left, he asked, "What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"

An Jiayi lifted her heavy eyelids; everything she saw was hazy and unclear, except for Xie Zhang’s face, where every emotion was vividly displayed.

Tears welled up in An Jiayi’s eyes, and with a hoarse and choked voice, she asked, "Mr. Xie, how much longer?"

Xie Zhang frowned, "What are you talking about?"

"How much longer until we have to separate?" An Jiayi said, "What rises must fall, am I about to..."

She did not finish her sentence.

Xie Zhang understood.

His expression darkened, "Who told you something?"

An Jiayi refused to say, closing her eyes slowly, she said, "The previous woman, why did she leave?"

Xie Zhang said, "That’s not important."

"It is important," An Jiayi said softly and stubbornly, "I need to be prepared."

Xie Zhang pursed his lips, his face displeased. If An Jiayi were looking at him right now, she could definitely see the coldness on his face.

But she was closing her eyes, unaware of all his emotions.

"The previous woman was different from you," Xie Zhang finally said after a long while.

An Jiayi laughed, probably in disbelief, "What’s different?"

Xie Zhang fell silent for a moment, then said softly, "I never touched them."

An Jiayi thought that she must be delirious from the fever, hallucinating.

She thought this was really not a good time to chat, so she fell silent.

Xie Zhang didn’t expect Jiayi’s reaction to be so bland. He had laid it all out, shouldn’t this woman at least be a bit surprised? Why did it seem like he was just spouting nonsense?

Xie Zhang frowned, he took a deep breath and said coldly: "Alright, you go rest."

Jiayi heard the sound of Xie Zhang’s footsteps slowly fading away.

Her fever worsened through the night, her little face turned all red.

Xie Zhang had no choice, so he called Bian Yue.

Jiayi was delirious from the fever and still heard Xie Zhang say: "Bian Yue, lend me your personal doctor."

"..."

"No! It’s not me who’s sick," Xie Zhang said. "Don’t dawdle, send someone over now."

Although Jiayi was unclear about what Bian Yue said, she could tell from their conversation that they were quite familiar with each other.

In her life, Jiayi knew she would hardly ever be able to speak to Xie Zhang in such a tone.

Bian Yue’s family doctor was indeed more professional, probably because the young lady herself was frail.

After Jiayi was injected and took some potent medicine, her high fever finally subsided.

When she woke up, her body was soaked in sweat, and her throat was dry.

Jiayi got up, wanting to go to the hall to pour herself a glass of water.

Not familiar with this new home, Jiayi searched for quite a while before she finally found her way to the hall.

She drank some tea, instantly feeling much relief in her throat.

Jiayi didn’t know when Xie Zhang had appeared behind her. With arms crossed, he watched her leisurely and said coolly, "This Doctor Li Sihe is really not bad. It appears I was right; Bian Yue uses good stuff!"

Jiayi, holding the empty teacup, looked at him.

Xie Zhang sauntered up to Jiayi, took the teacup from her, and looked down at her, "What are you looking at? You’ve troubled me all night, and you still dare to look at me like this!"

Jiayi then lowered her head apologetically, "I’m sorry..."

Xie Zhang frowned.

Geez, really not fun at all.

He composed his expression and slowly said, "Alright, go to sleep now."

Jiayi said, "I saw yesterday, you were drinking tea with Bian Yue and the others."

Xie Zhang’s expression turned slightly cold, "When did you learn? Started tracking me?"

Jiayi said, "Mr. Xie, I will not do it again."

Xie Zhang’s anger merely lasted a moment, but he was somewhat curious, "Why were you tracking me?"

"I wasn’t tracking, someone took me to see it," Jiayi paused and then said, "Mr. Xie, I know why I’ve been so abnormal lately."

"Why?"

Jiayi looked up at Xie Zhang, "I like you a little."

Xie Zhang thought, Jiayi was either very naive or just silly.

He was more inclined toward the latter.

Everyone is an adult; some things, once said, become pointless.

"To tell me this is meaningless," Xie Zhang said. "Jiayi, our relationship has nothing to do with feelings."

Jiayi felt the water she had just drunk turn a bit sour, her nose turned red, "I know, I just wanted... wanted to tell you. If I can’t control my feelings, I will choose to leave."

So it wasn’t a confession, it was a farewell.
