Chapter 50: Another one had shown up

Sal walked over slowly. Yanai opened his eyes when he heard footsteps.

Seeing Sal in his cub form, Yanai was a little surprised. "Why are you like this?"

"I was injured by Kith and Finch," Sal said flatly, frowning.

"With your escape skills, how did you still end up this badly hurt?" Yanai teased, his lips curved into a wide grin.

The mention of it made Sal’s expression darken. "That’s none of your business."

"Tsk, so weak," Yanai scoffed. "What do you want with me?"

"Your ability has healing properties," Sal said. "My female is about to give birth. I want you to help protect her and the cub for a while."

"You actually have a female? And even a cub already?" Yanai looked as if he’d heard something utterly unbelievable. He laughed. "Which female is blind enough to fall for you?"

"You’re the blind one," Sal shot back. "I’m handsome, strong, and plenty of females like me. You, on the other hand—hiding in the deep mountains all these years—aren’t you still a virgin male?"

Yanai’s expression darkened. Thinking of it annoyed him. He’d been cultivating peacefully in the mountains when, one night, he inexplicably lost his chastity. He suspected he’d run into some kind of succubus. It scared him badly enough that he fled the area and came to the wastelands instead.

"How long do you want me to help watch over her?" Yanai changed the subject.

Sal thought for a moment. "One year."

Now that the spirit pearl had recognized a master, he could no longer absorb its energy. How long it would take for his strength to fully recover was uncertain. Making this guy work a bit longer wouldn’t hurt.

After what happened yesterday, Sal realized there were too few males around Nina who could truly protect her. If both he and Mino were absent, she could easily end up in danger.

And their cub might be too large, making the birth risky. Having a powerful healer on hand would be much safer.

When Sal went to retrieve the spirit pearl, he’d unexpectedly discovered Yanai’s trail and guessed he was somewhere in the wastelands. Yanai was strong and had healing abilities—he was the perfect choice.

Sal didn’t trust the tribe’s shaman. If Yanai had refused, Sal had even considered killing Dora outright, just to stop her from competing with Nina for medical attention.

"Alright," Yanai agreed with surprising enthusiasm. "One year isn’t too long. After that, we’re even."

"Deal."

Three years ago, Sal had helped Yanai once. This was Yanai repaying that favor.

"My female is called Nina," Sal added. "When you go over later, don’t reveal my identity. Just say you’re a shaman—someone a friend invited to help take care of her."

"So your female doesn’t know who you really are?" Yanai asked, puzzled. Then he seemed to understand.

"Well, that makes sense. You are the leader of the rogue beasts. Any normal female would be terrified if she knew—she’d probably dump you on the spot."

"My female won’t be afraid," Sal snapped. "And she won’t abandon me."

He said it firmly, but deep down he wasn’t entirely sure. In his heart, he was afraid that if Nina ever learned his true identity, she might reject him.

"Still, hiding it from her like this isn’t great," Yanai said. "She is already carrying your cub, after all. And why not just say you’re the one who asked me to come?"

"I told you how to say it—just do it," Sal said impatiently.

Nina didn’t even know he was a beastman yet. How could he explain his real identity, let alone to Yanai?

Yanai glanced at Sal’s forehead. "You haven’t formed a bond with her. Don’t tell me you’re planning to be a scumbag male and leave her alone with your child?"

Sal was speechless. "Of course not. Once I’ve healed, I’ll bond with her."

"Fine, then I’ll do it your way," Yanai shrugged.

"And one more thing," Sal added seriously. "My little female is beautiful and capable. You are not allowed to develop improper thoughts about her—let alone try to seduce her."

Yanai looked utterly disdainful. "I’m not like you idiots who rush to bond with the first female they meet. I’m not interested in females at all, and I definitely won’t fall for yours."

"True," Sal snorted. "With how dense you are, even if you tried, you couldn’t seduce a female."

Even so, Sal couldn’t help adding, "Remember what you just said."

Unfortunately, Sal had never heard the saying looks can be deceiving—and it applied to beastmen too.

Some males were masters at sneaking into beds.

He never imagined that today, he’d be inviting a true big-tailed wolf of a romantic rival into his home—literally letting the wolf into the house.

Yanai turned away coldly. "You can go back now. I’ll head over later."

Sal said nothing more. Wolves kept their promises. Since Yanai had agreed, he would come.

Sal sped back toward the stone house. Nina should be waking soon, and he didn’t want her to worry if she couldn’t find him.

Not long after Sal returned, Nina woke up.

She stretched a little, felt fine, and realized she had nothing to do that afternoon. On a whim, she decided to play with the cats.

She grabbed a few cat toys and waved a teaser wand in front of the "little kitty." Sal immediately bounced after it, hopping and leaping in cooperation.

Nina led the "little kitty" outside and sat down to play with him.

Mino couldn’t stand seeing the "cat cub" hog all the attention, so he turned into a small white cat and joined in as well. Nina took out another teaser wand for him. The two males ran, jumped, rolled, and tumbled around together, having a great time.

When Yanai arrived, what he saw was two idiotic males being teased around by a small female with strange little toys—and enjoying it immensely.

He froze, looking as if he’d been struck by lightning.

Is this what a dignified, iron-blooded male is supposed to look like?

Being played with by a female? Had they gone mad, or was he hallucinating?

When Nina got tired, she brought out a catnip toy. The two males instantly got high on the scent, flopping onto the table and rolling onto their backs, bellies up, faces full of bliss.

Yanai covered his eyes in disgust. He couldn’t bear to watch.

Sure enough, once a male had a female, he became stupid. He swore he’d never take a female himself.

Suppressing his disdain, he walked up to the stone house and deliberately coughed twice. "Ahem."

Nina turned her head and saw an extraordinarily handsome male.

He had long silver hair, features as sharp and perfect as if carved from stone, handsome brows with a hint of cold arrogance, clear eyes that held a trace of innocent purity, and a tall, straight build with broad shoulders and a narrow waist.

Nina looked puzzled. "Who are you...?"

Yanai looked at Nina, genuine amazement flashing in his eyes. The little female really was beautiful—more radiant than the finest flowers in the mountains.

Mino and Sal sensed another beastman’s presence. They shook their heads to clear them—things had felt too good just now, and they’d let their guard down.

Mino shifted back into human form. Seeing Yanai, he exclaimed in surprise, "Yanai? Why are you here?"

"Mino?" Yanai was equally shocked. "Why are you here?"

No wonder the white cat had looked familiar—it was Mino.

Nina looked between them. "You know each other?"

"Nina, this is Yanai, the young lord of Silver Moon City—my friend," Mino explained.

Nina was stunned.

The young lord of Silver Moon City?

Wasn’t that... one of her former fiancés—the one who’d broken off the engagement?

What kind of cursed fate is this?

Another one had shown up.
